One that I realised that you see more in writing also is that where in English we would say "whether" in Spanish they use the subjunctive to get across the concept without using that word. "Sea bueno o sea malo" - Whether he is good or bad.

Being a polite cracker from the South of the United States, I have always found the subjunctive to mean ¨May¨ instead of ¨can¨. Where one might... where one may... May I have some more, Guapetón? or whatever... may I, might I, subjunctive. I can... I will... indicative. So, regardless of ¨que¨ if the intention is politeness as in may or might... THE BEST Subjunctive Book on the market, period. I have them all so, I can say this with confidence. Also, the book on the Spanish Past is just as good!

@LightSpeedSpanishChannel

Do we actually need the subjunctive? *_Would_* we be able to live without it? *_Shall_* we live without it? *_Could_* we live without it? *_Can_* we live without it? Because I'm no Shakespearian playwright, my answer -would be- is: YES, yes we should, and we shall.

In English also "I suggested that he eat more bacon" to me sounds better than "I suggested that he eats more bacon", but maybe that is just me.

@@forthrightgambitia1032 I can live with either. I don't think adding the s changes the meaning at all, it just sounds off like you say.

Yes it is a stylistic thing. It definitely adds an air of authority to it that reminds me of some of the strict and starchy teachers at my old grammar school.

@@gringoenespanol No, not at all. The subjunctive is simply subjunctive, and the imperative is simply imperative. You should know this, being a "writer" and all.
