Bloody what Al, you've come a long way from early MCM days. Comfortable with the camera, doing talkovers etc. I've said before, luv the lack of hype on this channel, so easy to watch. John's a legend and good to see Woody learning some engine build skills. Woody is doing a great job on this project, paying attention to detail and making the extra effort. Have a lemon squash guys, 'cos you've earn't it

Always had a soft spot for the 4A-GE, first engine I ever rebuilt was a series 1 back in 1995. As an apprentice aircraft engineer, OCD central. 86kw of awesomeness!! Did everything I knew as a 19year old. Baked on Dry lube on the piston skirts Thanks work!!), Everything done to spec. 3 angle valves, stupid excessive port job when only a clean up of the casting dags (Not that there were many), would have been enough. Even trimmed and cut the valve guides (Looked like bullets in the ports) to flow that "little bit extra" machined throttle body etc, etc... Huge 11.1:1 compression (yeah....that was real smart!!) Had to put 15-20% toluene into every tank to stop it pinging it's head off. Back in 1995 we only had 95-96 octane premium too... "Stage 2 TRD cams" lol... They looked stock really think the overlap was more and a mm or 2 higher lift.. can't remember Idled at 1200rpm... end result was 160HP.. or 119kw, @9000rpm ... hehehe After it's 4th gearbox in 9 months I sold the car and bought a 93 GSR Lancer... that's when the Mitso thing started... still going with a TME and Leggie... Keep up the great work gents... John is a Legend!

I like Al's (not too) shaky cam work and "easy does it" narrative style. Good music choices as well. Woody's abilities will be "next level" after this build is done. Heaps of "learning the hard way" going on here. Nice work chaps. There is always plenty of talent on both sides of the camera and at the end of the spanners.

I'd love to see a run down of John's ute, build history, up on the hoist, taken for a spin and all that. I had an XC with a lumpy 351 during high school just before the v8 ban for P plates came into play, I'd go through a set of rear tires a week just cruising to school and back. Great fun!

last truck engine I rebuilt was a 67 chevy 283. I used plastic sacks labeled for each valve gear set. put ALL the parts for each valve(lifter, pushrod, rocker assembly)in the bag oily as it came apart. examine each part one at a time. all was good so on reassembly everything went back together as original. rebuild done in 1981 and lasted ever after just fine. things that are worn to fit need to stay together.

This is a great series, I love watching people resurrect things that were never good to begin with, because they are into them. Particularly with Al just shitting on it all the time. It's funny and I like that Woody is so into it, poor man's Ferrari, brilliant, I knew a guy who loved them, he was a good dude, eccentric but you know a good dude. I get it Woody, I like L-Series Subaru "surf" wagons. Leone wagons.

*WOODY PLEASE READ WHICH OIL PUMP DID YOU BUY?? BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT THE SAME FOR BLACK AND SILVER TOP, ALSO MAKE SURE YOU USE THE BLACK TOP CAMGEARS AND BELT AS THEY HAVE DIFFERENT NUMBER OF TEETH* the Blacktop cam belt is one tooth shorter at 110 compared to the 111 of the Silvertop. Normally the belts can’t be swapped between engines but if the entire tensioning system (Silvertop oil pump and spring tensioner) is changed then a Silvertop belt can be used on a blacktop. To reduce noise the blacktop belt also featured a slightly different shape teeth profile. However the blacktop was made with a hydraulic tensioner that has a reputation for unreliability. The tension system can be swapped but it also requires the swap of the oil pump also. Please see “Camshafts belts” and “oil pumps” for more information. The Silvertop engine featured a slot leading into each cam bucket recess for oiling of the bucket. In the Blacktop this was significant increased in width for greater oiling yet again. To allow for the difference in cam belt tensioners the oil pump castings are different between the engines. They are interchangeable if all the other belt tensioning parts and cam belt are changed at the same time. Please see “Camshafts belt tensioners”, “Camshafts” and “Camshafts belts” for more information. Blacktop also has different ECU and uses MAP and TPS whereas silvertop uses airflow meter
