I love how unique this is. Not only is it 4D, but instead of using e and q to slide your 3d cross-section along W, you rotate! I have never seen that before.
@BrianatorFTW2 жыл бұрын
and the added strafing does allow you to slide (using shift+those keys none-the-less) but it does it to the perpendicular directions rather than just W (because with the rotation you can walk along W, and the W strafing would be useless if it stuck to W)
@cloud54642 жыл бұрын
I think there should be some kind of “4d snap” feature, where when you push a certain button, when you scroll it’ll snap to each meter in the 4d world. This would work especially well with the strafing mechanic.
@DialecticRed2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and also hopefully make the aesthetics a bit more pleasing, because imo when everything gets all angular and wonky its kinda hard to tell what's going on. Maybe instead of a button, it could be a toggle of some kind, or an adjustment for the intervals the world should rotate (i.e. 90°, 45°, 15°, or whatever).
@DrowseProductions2 жыл бұрын
@@DialecticRed this would make building and exploring so much easier
@BrianatorFTW2 жыл бұрын
You actually aren't moving when your scrolling, just shifting the orientation of your hyperplane. Think to the 2d->3d frog example tutorial where scrolling doesn't move the character in the 3d space at all. and while I haven't double checked yet I think the only orientations that look normal to us are the ones aligned to the axis that the new hotkeys is set to, where the 4th axis is entirely perpendicular and non-visible.
@DialecticRed2 жыл бұрын
@@BrianatorFTW Yeah, that's why in my comment I mentioned that the degrees of 4th dimensional "look direction" could be done on intervals, such that if for example it were 15°, after 6 scrolls your direction would face 90°, arriving back at a comfortable perpendicular position without the need for shortcuts and whatnot. Of course, as I said ideally this would be configurable, because I'm sure some people wouldn't like the "choppy" nature of it. It also could interfere with gameplay, such as the dungeons where the passageway only opens at the right direction in the 4th dimension.

I think it would be a mistake to not pick a focus for the game. Not doing that could mean that you probably won’t be able to pick a direction for it, leading to feature-creep. If you know about Yandere Simulator, that’s the exact problem that it has… Think about the difference between Minecraft, Terraria, Subnautica and Raft. Each has a different mix of combat, building, random events and progression, leading to 4 different games. It’s just that you can’t make all 4 at once (think, Minecraft’s design principles, and how the other 3 absolutely destroy them)
@BrianatorFTW2 жыл бұрын
It does seem he has a direction, its just a very broad one, he plans on showing off the 4d nature and make sure it is important, and one of the biggest things that will help him implement that and maybe even help with his future plans is multiplayer and PvP. Figuring the interactions of 2 3d beings as smart as people will help him figure out how 4d beings should interact with us, because it would be a lot of the same just actually a bigger target due to the extra dimensional depth

Defeating a "final enemy" and returning to a 3D world seems more of a hinderance to the experience. Take the Minecraft ending for example. If you defeated the dragon and the game ended there, there wouldn't be a lot of fun left to be had. I think as a 3D being getting trapped in a 4D game, I think the player should embrace their new life. Perhaps not a return to their old, but ascending even higher as they became essentially a God to what they used to be.

They return to their 3d world but with the power of the 4th dimension!
@antonberkbigler57592 жыл бұрын
One thing that kinda bugs me (besides how the texture tiles are displayed when rotated) that I hadn’t quite put my finger on until the 4:50 diagram was this: the 3 dimensional being is not directly interacting with 4 dimensional space, instead each being contains a personal slice of 3 dimensional space that they superimpose onto existing 4 dimensional space when interacting with it. This is most apparent in the rendering system, at least on the conceptual side of things and not the mechanical. Any light taken in by the retinas is literally bound to the 3 dimensional physics of the plane, and cannot perceive any light moving on a 4 dimensional path. Let me use flatland as my basis here for further arguments. The protagonist of flatland is a 2 dimensional being from a 2 dimensional world that is momentarily plucked from his reality by a 3 dimensional being in order to broaden his horizons of dimensional physics. The main character of flatland, when in 3 dimensional space, is able to see in 3 dimensions, more or less. Because light was moving in 3 dimensions, bouncing around and flowing in 3 dimensions and thereby being picked up in 3 dimensions. I see no base reason a 3 dimensional being placed raw into a 4 dimensional space wouldn’t be able to see in 4 dimensions. And I do say raw because there’s an easy lore explanation for this discrepancy in 4d miner that is already supported by the existing plot. Whatever 4 dimensional being that isekai’d the protagonist of 4d miner has for health and safety reasons has given or attached some manner of device to our avatar that superimposes a slice of 3dimensional space that our protagonist exists in. This slice both filters the 4d reality into something easier to comprehend, and applies an amount of pressurization/stability to our avatar’s body so that their insides don’t just immediately spill out everywhere through the fourth dimension. This is the main purpose of the device that allows our protagonist to rotate in the fourth dimension, i.e. why I said that this explanation was already supported in game. Not that many players would stop to think about that anyway, but they might if given the circumstances or contextual clues to do so. By the way I’m of the understanding that particles themselves do not have dimensionality and the N-dimensionality of a space they’re in only determines the ways that they can move around and link up with each other into structures, ergo there’s no difference between a 3d hydrogen atom and a 4d hydrogen atom because they are the same thing. Moreover I think particles are just excitations of spacetime that form when enough energy condenses in one place.
@antonberkbigler57592 жыл бұрын
Also just realized that the spatial normalization tech is also health and safety for the inhabitants of the 4d world itself, because otherwise you’d just be slicing through everything at all times. To slice something, an object must push material out of its way, and the ease/difficulty of this is determined by the thickness of the object’s edge. If the matter if a 4d thing came into contact with a 3d object, it’d only have to move like a molecule’s length of distance or less when getting shoved aside by our blade-like 4d flatness. However, if their matter is being pressurized by our reality slice, that means it is harder for it to be pushed aside hyper dimensionally perpendicular to us.

light cant interact with that 2d person thats perpendicular because theyre infinitely thin

hyperspatial physicist gaming + L + ratio Anyway it’s just light hitting retinas that causes sight, so it could come from hyperangles relative to our perspective, though we wouldn’t really be able to interpret anything truth be told. I would love to see this game detach from Minecraft. Sure, mc is still a hype and it helps to get attention and funding. But it is also kind of a restriction, and it makes the game look more like a cheap imitation like the thousand others jumping on the hype train, while in actuality it has an incredibly cool core idea that can carry the game on its own. I don't necessarily suggest to diverge from the build/explore/survive pattern, but already making the game look visually distinct could help it establishing its own brand. E.g. I have the feeling that the "earthly outdoors setting" (grass blocks, trees, stone) isn't the right fit for this game, but either a more futuristic or alien like environment could work better. I am thinking either of a theme closer to the game "antichamber" (blocks could be monochromic or neon) or perhaps the mc end dimension. Please don't make another mc clone that no one cares about anymore in a few months.

The only thing I want to see in this game is an end. Not a requirement, but a way to send off the game if you feel like your time with it is over. Too many survival games just don't have ends, and the ones that do are too underwhelming for me to enjoy them. If you could make an ending (a cool one at that) I'd be head over heels for it. Maybe with multiplayer, the ending could just be a solo thing where one person can beat it, but others can still play maybe getting a message like "PLAYERNAME escaped the 4-D plane!" Overall, I love this game and I cannot wait to play it a ton once it's finished!
@Tooterbooter2 жыл бұрын
It would be incredibly interesting to see how combat in 4D would play out… Because players and mobs are existing on different planes, this makes it possible to strike the insides of a player, skipping their skin, muscles, and bones, and directly stabbing organs. Some sort of 4D shield mechanic that protects you, but does increased damage if you’re hit in a cross-section of your 3D body would be interesting…

A tip on the Final Boss/Storyline thing; Make it so that once you are able to escape the 4D World and return to your 3D world, you will become into a 4D Being, because the effects of the 4D world changes the persons characteristics from 3D to 4D (in game randomly you could add some effects to slowly show the transformation). When using the 4D Glasses to view items that are currently invisible to you, shouldn't the wireframes appear on both sides of you, reflected across the y-axis? I hope you'll add visible rotation to those perpendicular snap movements. That's how Fez works, which is roughly equivalent to the concept you showed of a 2D character moving through a 3D world for context last time. Fez's visible camera rotation is extremely helpful to avoid getting disoriented, but of course it looks like you also need to work out some rendering lag that I'm sure is a result of an extremely mathematically complex process that I don't understand. Fez also has visible edges on its 3D blocks so you can see where the corners are. I'm not sure what this would look like in your game, but it's at least worth considering. Another feature I'd like to see is the volumetric doors from Antichamber, allowing you to create sprawling, recursive structures packed densely into a tiny part of the world. Going forward, I think it's important to keep the functionality of the visual style in mind, because just being able to *see* the contrast between different parts of the world is vital to keeping yourself oriented in 4D space. That's why Antichamber has such harsh, simplistic visuals. They're literally necessary in order to process the visual information. Besides, the way light propogates through a 4D environment is purely theoretical, so you can technically do whatever you want with it

I have a suggestion for controlling the section hyperplane in 4D: currently it is implemented via scrolling, which fixes two arbitrary axes in 4D (actually, just one arbitrary axis, I agree that the downwards direction isn't arbitrary). Factoring out the down direction, we have a 3-space in which we need to choose a section plane, or equivalently, its normal vector. We know how to control a vector in 3D with the usual input tools (mouse, controller), eg we control the vector of viewing direction in any ego shooter or mc with ease. So how about this: instead of scrolling, pressing and HOLDING the middle key (or mouse wheel) switches in the section plane selection mode, and as long as the key is pressed you are controlling the normal vector of the section plane like you would control the viewing direction in an ego shooter. I agree there is some difficulty in choosing the right basis in a freely adjustable section plane in a continuous way, but I think this is nothing that cannot be solved. I don't know whether this is a good idea, but I would like see this explored and tested. I have never seen an implementation of this.

Holding down the scrollwheel while using the mouse would be cumbersome, I suggest using Alt/Ctrl/Shift etc. Also, the current scrollwheel sensitivity is EXTREMELY low, it takes forever to do a full 360. While holding the key, Y axis would be locked and switched to the fourth axis, that way you could freely look around in the 4th dimension, except for the Y axis.

Is there any plans to test out other configs of blocks, like hexagon, triangles, etc to see which are more natural or work better in 4d space. Are cubes the most optimal shape for 4D?
@MuzikBike2 жыл бұрын
You can also tile space with 16-cells (basically a 4D octahedron) as well as 24-cells (no 3D equivalent). Not sure if they allow flat surfaces like hypercubes though.
@Hankathan2 жыл бұрын
@@MuzikBike You could also use any shape that tiles x-z-w space and translate it up in y, because y is distinct from the other dimensions, but a shape with real 4D symmetry would still be a lot nicer.
@pocarski2 жыл бұрын
@@MuzikBike 24-cells do allow flat surfaces, but none of them are aligned to the coordinate axes. It's similar to tiling 3D space with rhombic dodecahedrons (which is as close as you can get to a 3D analogue of a 24-cell), where you do get flat surfaces, but none of them are perpendicular to the axes of repetition. Probably hypercubes are the best option, because they're the simplest shape that tiles space, so they're the least confusing to look at.
@MuzikBike2 жыл бұрын
@@pocarski I assume a 2D equivalent would be tiling space with triangles, in which two of the flat surfaces wouldn't be coordinate aligned?

In programming to add a 4th dimension you just create a 4th position variable "W". 3D space can be mapped out with just X Y Z coordinates, adding W is all that's needed to map out 4th dimensional space.

in the multiplayer add a new bar to top of the screen. this bar is going to show you how many players are around your dimension, you can scroll to see them. a purple bar with darker purple line for your dimension (at least your view in 3d) while you scroll the line goes left and right. and the multicolor dots will represent other players.

How is support for editing textures and 3d models and such? That's the part I'd be most excited to mess around with. Amateur as I am. That is where my personal interest lies though. Terrain generation, mob animations and models, UI elements, item sprites, block textures and such could all benefit from some visual iteration, which I know is a lot of work that maybe you don't want to spend all your time doing. But I think it has a big impact on user experience. IMO the simpler and more familiar you can make the aesthetic, the better you can highlight the unique aspects of 4d gameplay. So just reducing the amount of super saturated, super dark, or 'alien' colors would help players grasp things more quickly. They aren't bad, but they may add some unnecessary confusion. Even one or two-color blocks with slight texture or color variations would look great I think, as long as you had a good balance of bright/saturated and neutral colors. So I think adding some support if there isn't any for the community to mess with it will cut down on the work and iteration required to find the best look and feel for things, and cut through the visual confusion straight to the meat of the game.

You can download the game, and mess with the assets yourself in the steam folder. Textures currently are like animated textures, so just a texture strip for each block.

Such an amazing implementation of an additional dimension. On the topic of 4D strafing, I think that an object should have a visual change when it's near an edge off in the 4th dimension. This would help both strafing and rotating. I think it would be a good idea if some of the more valuable ores and items somehow projected out into the surrounding dimensions somehow, making it easier to locate them. Perhaps with a glow?

I think a good sort of story theme for this game should be about confusion and disarray. Minecraft's story themes were about creativity and order, and I feel that would be an interesting contrast to that. Maybe some underlying themes of cosmic horror would add to it. Maybe even NPCs who have also been stolen from their worlds, even ones other than the one you know. Maybe that's what the hyperspiders used to be...

Since it seems that none has asked this, how would the Farlands (and almost every subsequent set of these) from Minecraft look in the 4D plane? I'm genuinely curious since exploration in the 4th dimension looks really fun and trippy, and if the Farlands cannot be generated normally, then, can you make a little sample of how the noise generator overflows and see what happens?
