Remember my childhood in Denmark, back in the 70/80's, where Draken often flew over our heads. Just a spectacular sight to see and hear, and the best og it is that, Saab did it again with the Gripen. Scandinavia dominans ;-) Cheers from Denmark

Draken makes one hell of a noise as I remember, fantastic sound along with that fire breathing tail. Always a great plane to photograph at displays, both in the air and on the ground - Incredible looking aircraft !

The first flight is 1955! Saab Draken is a beautiful bird even now, especially when you compare it to others fighters designs for the middle of 50th!

What's always struck me is how this design only started to look dated when stealth planes came into service. If someone were to make a Top Gun-style movie, someone could easily put this next to a Eurofighter or F/A 18 and say that this is newer and more lethal.

Remember as a kid we almost every day did see Drakens and later on Viggens in the sky. Draken did sound alot, loved it. These days I never see any swedish fighter jets in the sky. Would do anything for a glimse of these beauties. Very Nice Video! Thx

I remember too. It is a rare sight nowadays. It was not uncommon to see one or even two "rotar". I have a particular memory from the early 90-s when a Viggen made a low pass over my town.

I grew up between F5 and F10. Got to see a lot of Draken and SK60 back in the day. These days i never see anything except for the christmas tree, which is a fine tradition.

"Draken" in Swedish means both dragon and kite. The name was chosen for the fighters' resemblance to a paper kite, seen from above.

Thank you again for the video, and your videos! Can you ever enjoy the visit of the actual airshow? Superb filming. I have seldome seen anything like your filming. As a Swede I obviously like the Swedish aircrafts, and for me who have seen the 35 Draken and the 37 Viggen in the air while growing up it is a special thing. Thanks again, and good/nice work!

@@CEOkiller The Draken was a great in its day, but that wing configuration just wouldn't work today, even with better engines and avionics. Nowadays, aircraft are designed to be aerodynamically unstable to give them greater agility in the air. The wing design of the Draken is extremely stable, meaning it just wouldn't be able to manoeuver like modern aircraft. Still, it's a badass looking bird and in its day it just looked way ahead of its time when compared to things like the F4 Phantom etc.

Someone might have to correct me now but as i remember the Swedish airforce had problems to achive an exact topspeed of the J35 Draken because the fueltanks wasnt enough to really drive the crap out of it fully.There simpley wasnt enough fuel to do it so they put up a approx speed.

@@racers115 I would not necessarily call it a design flaw, rather a limitation as a result of its high-performance engine. The plane was initially designed for high altitude intercept of enemy bomber planes. Simply put, the plane would take off, launch its weapons and then come back down again. As for top-speed, I am not sure either. However, the Danish Airforce equipped several J-35 with additional fuel tanks which would have allowed for a more accurate speed testing.

@@pigglo There are quite a few jetplanes that can do that until the fuel runs out or the engine breakes ( MiG-25). Viggen (and most "newer") use a Turbofan wich is more fuel effecient compared to a plain turbojet engine.

Nachdem die Österreicher die Saab J 35 J Draken Ende 2005 ausgemustert hatten, Da habe ich es mir nicht zu träumen gewagt dass Schweden es schafft einige Jahre später wieder eine Flugfähig zu bekommen. In dem Falle sind es sogar zwei Drakens dieser Einsitzer hier und ein Doppelsitzer. 2013 habe ich bei den Luchtmachtdagen in Volkel mal wieder eine Restaurierte Saab 37 Viggen gesehen, Aber 2010 bei der Airshow im Schwedischen Göteborg sah ich auch wieder nach 5 Jahren eine Flugfähige Saab J 35 J Draken. Was mir aber besonders aufgefallen ist, Das war schon 2010 in Göteborg und auch hier im Video, Dass die Flugfiguren identisch sind wie sie damals bis zum Jahre 2005 auch die Österreicher geflogen sind, Und bevor ich es vergesse Bei der Airpower 2016 in Zeltweg flog eine Doppelsitzige Draken. Sowohl in der Gedenkformation als auch im Solo Display. Neben Schweden und Österreich flog die Saab J 35 J Draken auch in Finnland und auch in Dänemark. Österreich hatte sie ab 1985 gebraucht von Schweden übernommen, Und ab 1994 bekamen die Österreicher nochmals gebrauchte Saab J 35 J Drakens aus Dänemark die dort Außer Dienst gestellt wurden. Leider ging die Ära der Saab Draken Ende 2005 auch in Österreich zuende aber sie wurden bei der Airpower 2005 in Zeltweg würdevoll verabschiedet, Und zunächst durch 12 Geleaste F-5 E Tiger II ersetzt bis Mitte 2007 der erste Eurofighter Typhoon in Zeltweg landete. A few German scientist was a vital part of the development of the Draken. They are not recognized of some odd reason... (rolling eyes) In the Apollo project they could not keep the names a secret (...von Braun).

Yes, although it's not really the same maneuver. Draken could easily enter a type of controlled stall (superstall) at high angle of attacks. A trained pilot could just barely enter the stall and then exit it, so to use it as a way to brake the aircraft, so in that sense it's a Cobra maneuver. But unlike the Russian Cobra, the Draken doesn't balance the rear on the jet thrust, so it needs speed. And if you enter full superstall you will need altitude to recover from it.
