We warmly welcome you to our 6th train driver's view video from France. We've seen some interesting lines so far including 3 along the French coast (which we can't offer in Switzerland), a mountain pass with a very interesting history (it's actually amazing that it's in operation today) and now we bring you a journey from the alpine section of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. See a playlist of all the videos here: • France Cab rides
We will be travelling from France's highest city - Briançon with its train station at 1'203 meters above sea level, all the way down to the coastal city of Marseille. As with most railways in France, the line has many stories to tell about its past. We'll be passing 31 closed stations and at least 5 former railway junctions that have been closed and have disappeared over time. Many of the closed stations are still there, some in ruins while others have become private homes. Where information was available I included dates of closure and a picture of the station in its former glory.
Probably the most interesting part for me, was discovering that 16 Km of the original line is now underwater. Due to a history of disastrous flooding, construction began in 1955 of what would then be Europe's largest dam to help regulate the water flow, further enable irrigation and bring hydro-electric power opportunities. In 1956, construction began of a new track section between Chorges and Embrun. It was opened in 1960, as the old line was submerged along with 2 stations, 4 tunnels and 2 notable viaducts. During maintenance of the dam every 10 years, the old line once again becomes visible.
What is even more interesting is a branch line that was planned to leave the line near Chorges and connect to Barcelonnette. Construction commenced in 1909 and in anticipation of the dam, elaborate measures were taken to ensure the line would not be hampered by the then anticipated 50 to 80 meters of water. Many structures were completed including about 6 Km of tunnels, a 300m S shaped viaduct and a 680m viaduct crossing the Durance and what was to become the "Lac de Serre-Ponçon" dam. Inevitably works were hampered by the wars and the project ended up being abandoned as the dam was to hold much more water than originally planned, however many of the structures still exist today.
Now to the recording. Due to heat issues with the camera we used (GoPro 8), the air conditioning had to be running. This had a negative effect on the audio. The sunlight caused a few issues.
I hope you enjoyed the video. If you'd like to donate, please click the following link. Donations will be used for equipment and software in order to bring you higher quality videos. www.paypal.com... Thanks for watching and have a great day!

The channel RailCowGirl had a very similar issue. The fix was to upload with the video rendered in H.265 instead of H.264: "Every single edition of videos, encoded according to @KZfaq's own standards of H.264, failed on processing. Both the H.265 I rendered passed the processing and was within just hours available as 4K on KZfaq."

Another great video. Thanks. Weather spoils it a bit (too much sun/too little sun) but it is still a pleasure to enjoy the journey. The line is an engineering master piece. As most of the ancient lines are. It is breathtaking that most of the structures (tunnels, viaducts and bridges - beside the line itself) are still more and less in an original shape with only a basic maintenance.

@@lorirocks777 Oh the memories! I miss France so much. I used to ride the trains all the time, especially the local trains from Ville d'Avres (I hope I spelled that correctly, if not, please correct me.), to the RER near Paris and the Metro. My favorite was the train from Paris to Diep and Paris to Callet and back. We'd take the train to those cities and either ride the ferry to the Uk or the Hovercraft to Dover. We'd then board two different trains: one to London and the next to Colchester where our Grannie lived. That was back during 1975 and 1976.

I like these videos for my stationary bike rides, but one request if I may. Is it possible to cut the (at least longer) drives through tunnels out? Sometimes there is more than a minute of just pure blackness which does not seem to add a lot to the experience it seems. Otherwise keep them coming.
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. It is possible, but there are likewise people who are disappointed when the tunnels are cut short because they like the authentic feeling of how long they are. I was one of those people. When I was a boy watching a video of the Lötschberg line on VHS, I was very disappointed that the main tunnel was over in a matter of seconds. The up side to youtube is that it's easier to skip tunnels than with VHS, unless you're pedalling I guess 😅

Actually later on the video why does it say Meyrargues is a former station whereas it clearly shows it is still in use?

This is a very nice recording, but I was curious why there is so much wind noise? Where was the microphone?

It's the aircon, which is necessary to prevent the camera from overheating. We do our best to avoid this, but sometimes it happens.

What date was this filmed? PS very enjoyable even though it's still not 4K.

Thank you. Not sure about the exact date, but it was December 2021.

Thanks... was curious about the date given the amount of snow on the ground at the same time being cognizant that the starting location is at a high elevation.

A really spectacular video, thanks! On 1:01:09 - is that switch in wrong position? It looks like it is in position for moving straight and not to/from the side track. Can someone explain please?

That's normal on single track lines in France. They are spring loaded.

@@lorirocks777 Great, thanks! As far as I see that switch is automatic. Is there any system for removing snow from between rail and blade to ensure switch can change position?

Yes. Unfortunately there's no way to undo that.
