Pretty sad music you can hear anywhere and voice-over forgotten the moment it is spoken take precedence over an engine sound, the J-79, which sounds like nothing else mankind has ever invented, and an engine that has been forever silenced now that the F104 and F4s are retired. But who cares about a one of a kind engine! Play that stupid music! Also, make sure to click all those loud camera shutters.

Love to see, and hear, the Starfighter anytime. I was stationed in West Germany with the Canadian Army in the 80s. Although they were stationed in Baden-Soelingen, we saw the Starfighters fairly often at our base in Lahr, and also saw them on exercise. In 1986 I drove to Baden-Soelingen for the retirement ceremony for the CF-104s as the last operational squadron was being replaced with the CF-18.

As a kid i was taken to an airshow at Ottawa Ontario Canada. The thing I remember about the Canadian built Royal Canadian Air Force CF104D was on take off. It folded its landing gear up, stood on it tail and went straight up breaking the sound barrier on its way. This memory is still wath me today
@raynic11734 жыл бұрын
Man that was way out recommendations and very risky. Pilots were instructed to not exceed 260 knots with gear down. You break the gear, you have to bail out and lose the aircraft
@birgerkagan60874 жыл бұрын
Like so many memories also this one fails you. Performance wise the 104 was not able to do a vertical accelerating climb (90° to the horizon). With a basic (empty) weight of just over 14.000 lbs and an engine producing a maximum of 15.600 lbs of thrust you can see that your memory is giving it more credit than it should have - but as a former 104-jockey I can assure you that its performance was quite impressive even if it was not as fantastic as you remember

My dad was a Zipper IP at Luke AFB in the 60's. When he would fly X-country, he tried to refuel at bases that were "J79 deficient." Naturally he would goose the throttle whilst taxiing, resulting in that shriek/howl. By the time he shut down, he would have a sizable crowd gathered at the plane. And being a good 104 jock , he just had to wear his spurs in the ops building. Dad passed 01/01/21. I really miss him.

While this particular Starfighter was indeed an ex Royal Canadian Air Force (CF-104D) example aircraft, it was not built by Canadair, but rather by Lockheed itself. Only the one seater version were built by Canadair, and they built close to 400 CF-104 (for the RCAF and the Luftwaffe)

You can follow it on Facebook/Starfigher.no. The only F-104 flying in Europe today. Not in active duty. They have spend many years to get it back in the air. They got a lot of spare parts from countries there former had the F-104 to help bring it back on the wings. Her from Denmark they got the catapult seats and more. The agreement was, when it was back on the wings the pay-back would be to participate in an air show in Denmark. And so they did here in 2018.
