The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum has just finished restoring Bridgton & Saco River Steam Locomotive #7 and held a special event to commemorate her return to service. They had both the #7 and the Monson Railroad #3 running trains all day.

The 2 footers seen here once traversed the Maine woods at 5 different railroads. There are 2 operations on original railroad grades in Phillips Maine, and the other in Alna Maine. Coincidentally they were the two largest narrow gauge railroads in the state. The engine in this video was once used on the Bridgton & Saco River Railroad.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing engine #7 when it used to be at Edaville R.R. in Carver Massachusetts. I loved trains since.

Wasn't i ever shocked when i was there and found out that the rails are just 2 feet apart where standard rails are 5 feet apart.

Great closeup shots. Nxt time, please shoot #7, honest broad shots, right n left side while stationary. Not compressed superposed shots. Also, close up of details on the loco: Crosshead, side rods, airpump, turbogenerator, whistles, ... and any detail closeups u like. Didn't realize how bumpy n crooked those rails r. Fun to watch the little giants negotiated dem.

I shot all of this video with it, it's a good general purpose lens. Less sharp than the 12-60 but you don't really notice that on 4K video, it's really only noticeable on stills.

Insane to think that engines this size share the same gauge track as a quarry hunslet in the uk, these things are utter beasts, wish I could see one somewhere like the welsh highland railway, give it a good running

I really enjoyed watching this video and seeing the actual engine that was on the Bridgton &Saco river railroad. (no.7) I walked the old Bridgton & Harrison line a lot of times. The right of way goes right past my cousin Charlie & Donna Cooks home in Bridgton ME. He finds the little railroad spikes sometimes near his driveway and his garden. He gave me 2 of them. Did the NO. 7 run on that line also? I also heard they were going to put track in on that line and run tourist trains on there also. I hope that happens and I will ride that train for sure! I hope to see more of these video's on here and thank you for putting this one on you tube.

Jeff Hull Not moving to Bridgton unfortunately. They are going to Gray on an old trolley line that ran from Portland to Lewiston. However, The WW&F and SR&RL museums run on original right of ways to their name sake railroads amd were the largest two Maine two footers.

Thank you NarrowgaugeJoe, well at least that old trolley line in Gray and Portland to Lewiston Division will have some action there after all these years of being out of service. I saw that line and where there cars, signals and other narrow guage stuff is in Gray. A man in Maine who is friend of mine and living in Gray, showed me all of that and the old right of way. I'm looking forward to walking on that old line and riding on it when it is brought back for riding on it again. His name is Joe also. He is a railfan and likes Amtrak like I do and The SL&A railroad that comes out of Lewiston ME. We both watch Pan-am Freight trains also. Thank you for the info and I hope we can meet some day. Happy Railfanning!

Jeff Hull Do you know if anything in the roster is from the old S.R.R.L. ?
@3rdfarmer86
@3rdfarmer86 4 жыл бұрын
@@ronbennett6396 the Maine Narrow Gauge RR, WW&F, and SR&RL museums all have various pieces from the original SR&RL. The only surviving SR&RL locomotive is the WW&F #9. The locomotive was purchased from the SR&RL back when all 5 railroads were still running in the 1930's and was renumbered from SR&RL #6 to WW&F #9.
@3rdfarmer86

I believe that the B&SR sisters did operate over the line. B&SR #7 and #8 were actually the last 2 locomotives to operate when B&SR reorganized and became the Bridgton & Harrison Railroad and the last operating 2 foot locomotives to operate for the original owners.

Nice shots of a "very" narrow gauge railroad. Is this 24" gauge, reminds of my major amusement park engineer days over forty years ago! :)

Yep, 24" gauge. With the track as rough as it is it looks like the #7 is just going to fall over.

These trains once hauled passengers, mail, and freight tgroughout rural Maine at speeds up to 45 mph on 32 lb to 56 lb rail.
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 5 жыл бұрын
Hard to imagine these things doing 45 mph, they're a rough ride at 10. I guess better track work makes a big difference.
@narrowgaugejoe4189
@narrowgaugejoe4189 5 жыл бұрын
NorfKhazad Actually track work back then was in some cases worse. Which is why they had so many wrecks. Then standards came out to maintain railroad tracks to, so in todays world they would only be able to go as fast as the track is officially certified for. For example the WW&F maintains their track to 25mph, but averages 15-18mph. Theres a few slow downs where the track guys have been working here and there. Also jointed rail is certainly no where near as smooth as welded rail.
