My friend was an engineer on B&M and I was glad to see this as I modeled some places even from Dole Jct. to Keene on the Ashuelot branch. I assume these guys are hourly ppaid as they are so slow I had to checked youtube settings as I thought the video was running in 25% speed. My GOD, they must taking this freight to China on a slowboad to China. This was painful to watch and even the death groaning waas terrible. As friends in Newfoundland I have say: SOME SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew! I bet biden was involved in this in some way!!!

NICE MODEL BUT THE SOUND SUCKS !!!!! STEAM TURBINES WHERE QUIET ,,, NOT GROWLING !!!!!!!! THE TURBINE SOUND WOULD BE MORE LIKE A STEAM SHIP ,,,,, A SOFT HISS SOUND !!!! LIKE A REGULAR STEAM LOCOMOTIVE SITTING STILL !!!!!!!! YOU'D HEAR THE AIR COMPRESSORS , STEAM RELEASE , POPPING OFF , AND THE SOFT HISS OF THE STEAM ........ THE ONLY THING YOU WOULD REALLY HEAR , IS GEAR GROWLING OF THE TRACTION MOTORS .. PUT IN A STEAM ENGINE DECODER AND TURN OF THE CHUFF ,,, INSTANT STEAM TURBINE SOUND !!!!!!!

Since speed is not controlled electronically how do the engineers in 844 match the pace exactly, set by 4014? By feel? is it as simple as that?
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 5 ай бұрын
Pretty much, yes
@NorfKhazad

Another thing it's useful to understand: The throttle doesn't directly control speed, it controls torque. The more you open the throttle the more steam flows to the cylinders and the more torque is applied to the pistons and through the rods, the wheels. That means you can have two locomotives applying different amounts of torque but running at the same speed. All the engineer in a second locomotive is trying to do is ensure they are always pulling on the locomotive behind them, rather than being pushed by it, or switching back and forth between pulling and being pushed. An experienced engineer can tell which is happening by feeling the slack action and (I expect) by listening to their locomotive's stack talk.

That/this is awesome...one more, you can see flame beneath the firebox on 844, but i don't see it on 4014...is that the difference between the oil firing conversion on 4014 during the restoration, and i am assuming 844 is the traditional coal firing firebox?
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 5 ай бұрын
@@grahamlivingstone1068 Both 844 and 4014 are oil fired, but I'm fairly certain 844 was built as oil fired to begin with. My guess was that 4014 has a more substantial ash pan arrangement (even if some of it has been removed) which blocks the visibility of the oil fire more than on 844.

Consider that these companies filed for chapter 11 in the 80’s and 90’s to escape long term pension expenses, dumping these peoples pensions down by more than half. Billions in promises disappeared in a blink, the same owners under different names swooped up the assets for “pennies” on the dollar. This game plays out across the globe giving the people that own “everything”, everything they don’t already don’t own. We are already slaves and we don’t know it.

The YN2 CW44AC leader on M427 was a nice touch. Fun fact, the reason for the yellow line on the snow plow is because CSX actually cut away part of it as it is one of the locomotives that will often run on Metro North's Hudson line. The reason they cut it is so that way the snow plow doesn't hit the third rail

Thanks. The main issues with the Jawn Henry were complexity and the electronics not playing well with the water and coal dust. Given more time they probably could have made it work much better, but it was the early 50s by the time they understood all the issues and the writing was on the wall for steam at that point.

What in the world is that car between the tenders and coal hoppers, it looks like two cabooses slapped together with all sorts of vents. Is this some kind of custom crew car, or was it based off of something? I'd love to make or find something like that for O scale.
@NorfKhazad
@NorfKhazad 8 ай бұрын
It's the N&W's dynamometer car, used to measure pulling force and speed, and calculate horsepower. Due to the Jawn Henry's experimental nature it was frequently run with the dynamometer car for testing.

@@NorfKhazad Roger. I've seen Illinois Centrals Dynamometer car at the (NMoT) in STL. That's the same museum that displays the Y6a 2156. The Illinois Central car looks more like a slightly modified coach or baggage car, hence my confusion. Quite a shame that Jawn Henry didn't survive to preservation but that's how it goes sometimes. I just started converting a MTH Y6b to 2156 (as no O scale exists of it) and was just doing research when I came across this video. Everything just looks so realistic it isn't even funny.
