Most of the trams were old Russian and Eastern European used equipment. The older subway cars are used, from Berlin. There is new rolling stock included but you can be assured it was not built there. All imported from Communist and former communist countries.

@@ChrisCanary You can be assured the new trams WERE built there. They are Thongil 181 trams, they are new bodies placed on Tatra chassis. The bodies were built in the Pyongyang Bus Repair Factory that also manufactured double decker buses alongside these trams and trolleybus and tram maintenance. All new trolleybuses are built using 99% North Korean parts in their own factories, the only thing in the trolleybuses that isn't North Korean made are the steering axles that are from CHNTC, a Chinese truck manufacturer, the rest is made in North Korea. This is coming from someone who has been looking into North Korean transport for a couple of years now quite in depth. I don't understand why it is so hard for people to believe they are capable like most other countries of manufacturing their own things. None of these things are Chinese imports.

Crossing trolley wires would be possible with insulated crossing points, necessary to prevent the plus and the minus poles of the trolley wire network from being connected through the tram wire. My guess is that such insulated crossings were undesirable (read: too expensive) for Pyongyang. At 5:00, you can clearly see that the tram wire actually goes over the trolley wires, so lowering the pantograph would indeed be necessary. Throughout the rest of the tram part of this video, there are however a few other moments where you see the pantograph lowered for seemingly no good reason. At 4:07, I could imagine a phase separator. But why at 1:49? The wire seems straight and the pantograph remains steady at some level before going up again. Hardly a 'bounce', I would say. But there is no other wire joining and no trolley line crossing...

I've personally never seen trolleybusses, they're a feat of engineering all on their own, I get that most of the fuel is rationed for the military, but they didn't have to go as far as to have trolleybusses. At the very least it makes me question the entirety of the public transportation where I live now. Edit: You know, that's a lot of cars for a country with "rationed fuel"..

На Тролзах сиденья установили удобные, только вот на Тролзах уже начали скрипеть редукторы, что режет слух. Поэтому предпочитаю пользоваться автобусами, не смотря на их цену, ибо быстро и комфортно.

@@KT4Dani I dont see anything modern here. Just some 1 to 2 refurbished trains and 1 - 2 refurbished trams. Go 1km outside of pyongyang and you'll see the actual life of north koreans. The buildings are just money spend to make it seem like north korea has money. Most of these are not even inhabitated

You see, that this tramvideo is also 2 years old. Now, over 35 trams are modernisated and trolleybusses nearly complete.

And I even don't talk about Metro - there is 0 trash cans in whole system but nobody is littering. It might be cultural thing. We look at public transportation as "our" thing. You don't litter at home so you don't litter in public transportation as well.

@@chatnoir1224 I happen to agree with you, it's less consequences for doing something, even if you did the same consequences in the western world, it would just make them more inclined to make sure they don't get caught. The people there just don't feel inclined to damage and graffiti public property, which is good. Although you could argue they are the ones lucky enough to catch the trams or busses, the lower class there might not have such a luxury.

So on the places, where i stay there wasnt any advertisements - thats right. But outside of city or the bigger streets near cityborder, there are some advertisement-bords like also in our countries. :-) For example, there are also marketing for some automobiles and other. But its on some special places and not in every place inside of the city. I like this very much, so for example in our german cities every place is full of advertisement...sometimes it looks terrible.

most of pyongyang's power is nuclear aswell, so not even the power generation produces much co2.

yes, in Pyongyang are very good air! Feel very good after a visit there with fresh air...this in a capital! :-) The transportsystem is very good!

Air quality is actually pretty bad because of heavy industry, coal burning and pollution and fine dust coming over from neighbouring China. It's okay in summer but in winter it's pretty bad.

KT4Dani From What I’ve heard from data and tourists who took the NK tour, they say the air quality is actually quite bad. Comparable to China. Due to industry and little emissions regulations for the cars that do hit the road, it creates poor air quality. Other than public transportation, electrification and renewable energy is non existent here.

I doubt they have good air. North Korea is industrial county, am I right? But the same time it is very undeveloped country with absolutely inefficient government, so I guess industry (plus cars and etc) spoils there heavy.

Ja da hast du voll Recht! Die Leute stellen sich das Land wie Russland vor 70 Jahren vor. Ich habe mir ganz Asien so merkwürdig vorgestellt. Aber wenn ich nach Tokyo flog, und dort eine Weile war, habe ich gesehen dass ich voll daneben war. Die Leute Asien sind rein kulturell gesehen viel reicher als fast jedes andere Volk. Nordkorea ist nicht so deutlich anders als z.B Vietnam oder Südkorea. Man will es uns nur so vorstellen. Also Plauen ist auch nicht so sehr groß, und Pyonyang ist es schon:-) Ich denke, nachdem ich ein Paar deine Videos gesehen habe, dass ich auch Korea Mal besuchen muss. Habe schon Pläne für Ukraine (auch wegen deiner Videos) und Russland. LG!

@@KT4Dani Dani, du muss noch nach Ägypten reisen - Tatras hatten auch dorthin geschaft. Nur der Zustand von ihnen ist sehr "Abenteuerlich". Noch schlimmer als in Ukraine.

Also die Gleisanlagen stehen demnächst zur Instandsetzung an...da gibt es noch viele Baustellen, welche aber konsequent abgearbeitet werden. :-) Erst 2008/09 wurde die komplette Strecke von Mangyongdae zum Bahnhof gleistechnisch erneuert. 2017/18 wurde die Brücke der dritten Linie mit neuen Gleisen versehen...es tut sich schon etwas, wenn auch nicht so schnell. Man muss daran denken, dass unsere Sanktionen die dortige Entwicklung schon stark ausbremsen. Die Bahnen mit denen ich mitfahre habe ich für Fotofahrten angemietet...also nur für mich oder bei Gruppenreisen für meine Gruppe. Kontakt mit Koreanern entsteht sehr schnell wenn man irgendwo auf eine Bahn wartet...das ist ein typisches Westmediengerücht, dass dies verboten sei! :D

I think, it's saving power. Just imagine, every trolleybus drawing around 150W (headlights, taillights, dashlights, etc.) extra from the lines. If there are 10 trolleybusses you get 1.5kw/h extra consumption. If the trams are taken into equation, you have a pretty big extra power consumption which has a toll on a supposedly fragile power grid. I can't see other reasons, because the cars, trucks and other busses have them on and they don't rely on the power grid.

But on the other hand, if you've watched other North Korean bus/tram/metro videos, you can see some trams even have multi-colored decoration lights at night...... Wouldn't power supply be more of a problem at night? BTW, since the newer trolleybuses were introduced after the DRL rule (I remember seeing DRL in news reports as early as in 2012), it should be safe to say that North Koreans still haven't mastered the technology or secured part supply for LED automotive lighting...

Thanks! They have a museum, but the historic cars (trams and trolleybusses) are also in normal traffic and dont stay in museum! They are running and have special plaques with historic text. :)

I read somewhere that this is the most common tram Rolling stock on Earth apparently. Communists really like trams. I guess when your only cars are ladas yugos, you don't have to worry about traffic

@@liamtahaney713 trams were just cheaper to make than cars, so why invest much into car developement? atleast this was the socialist bloc mindset. if one tram can hold 50 people for the same material cost as 5 cars that could only hold 3 - 4 people the choice is obvious, trams are more efficient.

Its important to seperate the daily life of peoples, citytransports and politics. We in GDR have some years ago a similar system, but we was also happy and have a normal daily life. (other than world, but not unhappy)...so also in Northkorea s lot is more normal than mostly europeans/americans think. Yes, i was there for 9 visits, also more than only a week!

Its planned in future. But since 2020 the borders are closed complete and its unknown, when DPRK will reopen borders for foreigners...maxbe in next 2 years its possible, maybe it need more time. Nobody knows.
