I thought that was wrong the 40mm submariner doesn't have the shock absorbers in its movement which really sucks. Also, not only did the new subs get the upgraded shock absorbers, but the OPs too, why!? What took them so long...f@#$ing Rolex.

Yes, Ian Fleming had an Explorer. Many people think the Explorer was therefore the Rolex reference that his fictional creation, James Bond, would have also worn - which may be a fair assumption.( However I understand the books simply have Bond wearing "a Rolex", and don't make it clear which one...?)

Jay Burgess Actually Ian Fleming did give more insight to which model Bond was wearing in his book. Check out on her majesty’s secret service where he hinted that the dial had big phosphorus numerals, which very likely to be Explorer I.

@@j.burgess4459 The exact model is not named but is described as having big luminescent numerals. As Fleming liked to model his spy a bit after himself, it is assumed he probably was describing his own Explorer. But I guess it could also be a regular Oyster Perpetual, some of those also had big numerals (the bubbleback). In an earlier book, when the Explorer was not yet released, during a dive mission Bond also wore a watch that had Oyster Perpetual written on the dial. Though, it is not entirely clear whether it's supposed to be a regular Oyster Perpetual or a Submariner, the latter was just released at the time.

​@@TouyoujinOkay, if he refers to numerals then I'd agree it would very likely be an Explorer. (A few of the very early Subs did also have numerals at 12, 3 and 9; but seeing Fleming himself was an Explorer guy, I guess the case for Explorer becomes more compelling - at least in that book.)
