村人を守った要塞教会　〜トランシルヴァニアの要塞教会群～
ルーマニアのトランシルヴァニア地方には、キリスト教の教会でありながら、戦いのための城壁を持つ、世にも不思議な「要塞教会」があります。13世紀から17世紀の間に300も作られました。その中の7つが世界遺産です。当時、オスマン帝国が勢力を拡大して、侵略の危機を迎えていました。人々は防衛のために教会を要塞化し、そこに立てこもったのです。
プレジュメル要塞教会の城壁は、高さ12m、幅5mの重厚なもの。城壁の内部には村人が避難できる集合住宅や、敵を監視する回廊が隠されていました。
ビエルタン村には、3重の城壁で守られた要塞教会があります。中心の教会が作られたのは13世紀。敵の脅威が増すごとに、取り囲む城壁を増設していったのです。教会に続く狭い道は迷路のようで、敵が一挙に攻め込めませんでした。
ヴィスクリ要塞教会は小高い山に築かれました。敵が襲ってくると鐘を打ち鳴らして村人に知らせました。

Fortified Churches that Protected Villagers: The Fortified Churches in Transylvania
Discover the extraordinary fortified churches of Transylvania, Romania-sacred Christian churches with ramparts built for protection. Of the 300 churches built between the 13th and 17th centuries, seven are now recognized as World Heritage sites. Built by German immigrants who settled in the region, the churches were fortified to protect against the threat of invasion from the Ottoman Empire, which was expanding its power at the time. These fortified churches served as fortresses in which the villagers could shelter to defend themselves.
The walls of the Prejmer fortified church are massive, 12 meters high and 5 meters thick. Inside the walls were housing complexes where villagers could take refuge and hidden walkways from which to watch the enemy.
In the village of Biertan, there is a fortified church protected by a triple wall. The central church was built in the 13th century, and as enemy threats increased, the surrounding walls were added over time. The narrow street leading to the church was like a labyrinth, preventing the enemy from attacking rapidly.
The fortified church of Viscri was built on a hilltop, where the ringing of its bell would warn villagers of an enemy attack.
