4K - Shafer Trail/Potash Road Full Drive | Canyonlands National Park, UTAH

Our drive through Canyonlands Shafer Trail/Potash Road on 7/8/18. We were able to successfully navigate the trail in a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium 1.6 FWD. Footage was shot on a GoPro 6 Black in 4k30FPS. Some sections of the video will have hard edits in them, the GoPro overheated several times during the trip(it was about 105 that day). The video cuts off about 2-5 miles past the end of Potash Rd(camera ran out of memory).

The best video made that I've seen on the Shafer Trail. No ugly mug narration and no silly music. Just plain road trip.

IKR! It was driving me nuts that i couldn't find a video of this road that showed what it was like to actually drive on it before i went out there.

I'm glad I didn't see this video before I drove it. I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to tackle those switchbacks. Thankfully the road is fairly wide and not as scary when you hug the wall and focus on the road and not the drop. We went up, which I think is probably easier, and we went a lot slower than you did, but I have a massive fear of shelf roads so that's just me. Great video!

It's not that wide Now. I just went down yesterday in a RAM 2600 a lot.of erosion from all the rain recently. Then the people in the rental jeeps that owned the road were not pulling over to let people pass going down. I always pulled over if I was at or close ti a pull out. They just drove past them putting me right on the edge and folding my mirror in as they passed me with 1"-2" to spare. Was a hair raising till we made it to the bottom. I guess since they didn't own the jeeps they didn't care but my truck cost me almost 100k .

Nice video man! Watching the drive down into the canyon was a little nerve wracking because of how narrow the dirt roads were, but I can’t wait to do this later down the road!!

Great video- very clear footage. Editing 4k isn't fun but the results here are great. You really captured the essence of the trail. I'm glad you didn't add distracting music. I prefer driving UP Shafer, then down nearby Long Canyon...which takes you to Rt279 heading back to town. Shafer is one of my favorite trails. We recently drove it again this past March. We rented a fully built Twisted Jeep. That week we also rented a UTV and took on Hell's Revenge and Chicken Corner's. If you haven't tried those two yet, you really should. Again, great job on the video- you should put up more! Cheers.

That takes some serious gonads! A trailer??? Wow I barely made it down in a High Clearance Ram 2500 Cummins. Because of all the jeep rentals going up the road. How you got a trailer around the benda wow! I had to back up a couple times to clear the turns . My truck is about 10' long without my 5r then I'm 49' long getting that down there without going over would be impossible.

Thanks for posting the full drive. I'll be doing this drive next weekend before heading to the Grand Canyon. it was nice to see a full drive through so i have a nice idea of what is ahead of me. Looks like I'll have no problems navigating the Subaru Forester through

Just this morning I did the first mile or so in the opposite direction (where video ended headed toward switchback) in our 2019 forester. Forester handled it fine but we didn’t have time to do whole thing. That said, the road conditions were nowhere near how smooth it appears in the majority of this video. Very bumpy... Top speed on flat parts we maybe reached 18-20mph for a tiny section. Hills were even more bumpy and going down a lot of the time we were 4-10mph. Admittedly no prior off-road experience.

Thanks for the info@@GG-vh4it i just spoke with somebody that went from Shafer to potash in her stock 21 Forester. She said she made it all the way through to the end without much issue. Just needed her husband to guide a little towards the end. She too had very little off road experience.

This is a great video. Thank you for posting. I had been doing some Google searches trying to figure out if my Chrysler Pacifica minivan would make it on this trail or if I should rent a Jeep. After watching this whole video it looks like it would be possible in the minivan but I might still look into the Jeep.

That's exactly the reason I recorded this and uploaded it in it's entirety. I was trying to do research of my own prior to heading out there and could only find mixed and cut videos of parts of the trail.

I was at Dead Horse point when I saw these two trails and an old guy told me that he and his friends drove a 49 Buick on that road and the car was never the same after that.

Second time I watched this completely, I liked and subscribed the first time about a year ago. 1. Starting about 2:01:10 or so I noticed first one, then two, then three, and another, what looks like a solid small "Orb" in the sky directly in front of you and maybe 20 feet above, but in air! OK, are these in the video or a playback anomaly or some other anomaly? Just asking. It's right near the end and your vehicle goes underneath them. 2. I followed your trip using Google Earth Pro. I couldn't figure where you started, Schafer Road. You ended about 12 miles south of Moab on UT-279. 3. Thanks for this long trip video so I don't have to do anything for a couple hours. I am convalescence and this was an beautiful escape. Thanks again.

Glad you were able to get some enjoyment out of the video! I would really love to get back out there someday! The orbs you mentioned are mounted on power lines. I believe it has something to do with making them more visible to aircraft.

What you had for tire pressure? I drive mine with 38 on the city. I went in a road like that with 34, but it looks empty and still very jumpy bumpy driving.

I want to say it was over 1 ft of drop at least. I know people go over it in Jeeps all the time. So, it depends on your setup?

Neither, it isn't really needed. The hairiest part is going down the switchbacks, but it isn't that bad. I do believe you need low gear and 10" clearance if you want to tackle the White Rim Trail though.

Ha ha, your GoPro overheated. My transmission overheated going up these switchbacks Sept 3, 2022. But I stopped twice to let it cool and by then I had reached the flatter area near the top and it cooled back down and I went on with no problem.

Just drove it all the way to Moab yesterday when you drove it it was in much better shape. Took me way too long to get down to the bottom. Mostly because of all the inexperienced drivers in rental jeeps coming up the road and not using the pull offs to let people pass! I was in a RAM 2500 Cummins. I had to back up a dozen times to a pull out because 90% of the people ascending drove past theirs 😒😔 , they either though they had the right of way or just didn't care!! Maybe they needed glasses and couldn't see past the hood of the Jeeps? Either way I was not happy my calf was killing me from braking even in 4 low by the time I made it to the bottom. We took a chance and left at the other end even with all the Mud pools from yesterday's rain. If I didn't have years of exotic driving in places like this we would have been stuck in the mud by the ponds at the other end. But besides the entitled drivers it was a great day 👍👍👍 4 years and the switchbacks are much narrower and ruted

I am going there in June and trying to figure out what equipment to get. How is your GoPro mounted? Which gimble?

I used the standard suction cup mount from GoPro, no gimble. The image stabilization on the camera does a good job with keeping the video stable. I ran a USB-C cable from the car into the camera through my moon roof to keep it powered. The battery kept overheating, so I removed it from the camera at some point in the video.

@@aaronc321 No gimble is part of the reason it kept overheating. It had to work that much harder. You could also next time mount a small, powerful fan next to it if it's really hot out...or make an enclosure filled with dry ice (not touching it directly) just to keep it running cooler.

@@MOAB-UT It was the battery overheating. They pack a lot of electronics into a very small package. Taking it out and running purely on USB power solved the problem.

@@aaronc321 Understood but the battery only overheated because of the excessive load placed on it by both the video and stabilization processing requirements. The nearby heat from the battery only made things worse. Even when the power source was USB, the draw requirements remained exactly the same (high.) Also, the hot environment also didn't help the battery situation. That said, I get your point. The battery couldn't keep up but the camera operated fine under USB power. My point was simply that the stabilization processing will make the camera work harder, which can lead to operational as well as battery issues. Some 8k cameras can operate almost indefinitely when liquid cooled. Many will shut down if they overheat as a safeguard. Anyway- great footage! You'll have to go back and explore other areas. With over a half a million acres, there is plenty to see.

It's actaully very easy. Many other trails in MOAB are much, much harder. I did this entire trail once in the snow in a FWD vehicle and still made it. Only in a couple of spots was it tricky. If it's dry out- no worries. YOLO.

Actually Shafer Trail is 19.6 miles and Potash is only 17 so there was more footage of Shafer. The Potash section is generally less challenging so some might drive faster on that part. Have you ever been?
