My name is Dan, and I am a railfan based mainly on Pan Am Railways’ Districts 2 and 3. Initially with the announcement of Union Pacific’s “Great Race to Promontory” excursion for Spike150 celebrations, I figured there’d be no way I could attend the hundreds of thousands of other railfans and enthusiasts out chasing the inaugural run of UP “Big Boy” #4014 after its restoration. Fortunately for me, the stars seemed to align and together with the work of my father we were able to book a trip to head west and chase the excursion from Evanston, WY to Ogden, UT and back. With everything seemingly in place, the wait lasting several months would begin. A few bumps, good and bad revolved around hotel changes to a new GH5 camera for 4K 60 FPS recording to news that UP “Living Legend” #844 would be doubleheading behind #4014 hit us and as before we knew it, it was time for us to fly west. Arriving in Evanston on the evening of Tuesday May 7th, 2019, we set our alarms for early to go claim our first spot for the chase. Under heavy, almost horizontal blowing rain, the first hints of steam could be seen in the horizon from the private crossing in Wyuta, UT we went to. An immaculate sight indeed, the historical train thundered by with #4014 blowing its haunting whistle. Never would I have imagined seeing an operational “Big Boy”, let alone on the UP Transcontinental Route with #844 in trail. It was incredible. From Wyuta we passed the train in thick highway railfan traffic in Emory, UT, just in time to get a shot of the train coming through the infamous Echo Canyon into the town of Echo, UT. With the train stopping in Echo, we leapfrogged the train to a bridge crossing the Weber River in Croydon, UT. Old bridge and locomotive alike, it was a cool sight. Then we went to a crowded road bridge in Morgan, UT, with plenty of time to spare with the train stopping again in Morgan Center. A manifest blocking people on one side, we were fortunate enough to be on the correct side to see the train in style. Traffic was getting worse and worse nearing Ogden, but we somehow were able to beat the excursion one final time to the yard entrance in Ogden, before seeing the thing one final time backing up out of the way of the main line. This concluded the first day of the chase, but it would pick up again on Sunday May 12, 2019, Mother’s Day. After some successful little railfanning missions during this waiting period such as the Deseret Power Railway, we woke up early on that beautiful Mother’s Day and got ahead of the thicket of railfans to our first spot at another private crossing in Morgan. In awesome morning light, the train finally rounded the corner as they stormed up to another stop in Morgan Center with the mountains providing a background. An unusually long stop in Morgan Center allowed us to beat it to an astonishingly crowded bridge and tunnel shot in East Morgan, where the train would come with short notice. With it being the weekend and all, traffic chasing the train was very bad, making the fact that they made another long stop in Echo good for us to get ahead of the train for one final shot. Setting up on the dusty Wasatch RD in Croydon, we would get a shot atop a little hill we scouted overlooking the tracks and I-80. The train steamed around the corner with a large crowd of railfans pacing it, making for a cool shot. With no way to beat the train to Evanston, their final stop for the day, we decided to just go in order to get some final pictures with everyone else of the incredible sight. We would fly back the next day, but this was certainly an opportunity I will never forget and always be thankful for. Congratulations to Ed Dickens and company for getting #4014 ready for the big trip and for making everything happen! This is my one hundred and ninety-sixth video of many more to come, so please feel free to like, comment, and subscribe.

I live very close to a RR track and one time when I first bought my house my father was over here talking to the furnace guys and all of a sudden we heard at steam locomotive - we both ran outside because I personally have never seen one before and this thing went right by blowing it's horn and spewing the steam - I thought for a second that it was some kind of time warp or something (ha, ha) but I think there was an event maybe at the Indianapolis Fair Grounds and this train was headed there. But it took out breath away for a few seconds it was so beautiful.

I was there too for the 1st leg (Evanston to Ogden) and you covered it perfectly. I've been viewing almost every video that comes out on KZfaq of the 4014 (and train), and yours is the best so far. Congratulations, excellent job, well done. We certainly must congratulate the Union Pacific Railroad, Ed Dickens and the steam crew for an outstanding job they performed on the 4014 too. A real class-act for the best class-1 railroad.

Thank you very much! I was surprised how many times I got it that leg due to traffic, but I’d say it all worked out very well! UP, Ed Dickens and crew sure did put on a class show with this chase and event, they did an outstanding job.

The quality of your footage is absolutely stunning. The bridge at 3:30 looks like an HO scale mockup until you see the truck moving underneath. It is clear, and steady, and breathtaking. Outstanding - thank you, and thanks to UP!

That's one of my favorite parts about that scene, it's something unique that looks great with the steam locomotives rolling over it. The GH5 does capture footage beautifully, glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much and definitely, thanks to UP for making this possible!

As both a truck driver and train fan, I felt kinda sorry for the truck and it's driver. That steam whistle probably scared the hell out of the driver if they weren't expecting it. It also probably made the truck feel a bit inadequate with just its little air horns! I still say that they should sell Big Boys steam whistle sound as a ringtone!

I'm looking forward to Ed Dickens next report on how the shake-down has gone and what UP has (re-) learned about Big Boys. His vids are great because he does not patronize at all and tells it straight. As a Brit. it is what I like best about American culture. Very refreshing. As for these two locos, they are surely the best surviving articulated and the best surviving Hudson. Steam does not get any better.

At the end of the video, you thank us for watching! Uh-uh. Thank YOU for showing. I saw a schedule and the 4-8-8-4 will be in Luling, Texas on November 4. So will I. Two comments if I might. I am impressed at how clean -- almost invisible -- the exhaust from the stack is. I always thought steam locomotives put out lots of smoke. Second, why is there a 4-8-4 behind the Big Boy?
@royalhudsonrailvideos
@royalhudsonrailvideos 4 жыл бұрын
I’m glad I can please so many people by sharing my adventures such as this one! Also that’s awesome you were also able to see the #4014 in Texas. The smoke stack is relatively clean as they just refurbished it and the unit now burns oil which is somewhat cleaner to burn. The #844 was also involved since the timing didn’t work out to run them separately headed west, but the double header coming east was planned.

Some nice shots there. Could anybody tell me; now that she is an oil burner, do the Americans “tube out”, In New Zealand, that is the practice of dropping the reverser right out, give her a fair amount of throttle, then drop a bucket of sand through a large funnel into the firebox. The purpose is to sand blast the tubes to clean them out of any oil soot and achieve better steaming. If you are in the right place at the right time, it is an amazing sight to see. It seems to me that doing that on a Big Boy would be incredible.

Greetings from Las Vegas, NV....Today is Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019 A friend and I are getting ready to head out to Caliente to scout the route for vantage points when 4014 makes the run from Caliente to Vegas on October 6th. Thanks, glad you enjoyed! That's awesome you and your friend will be taking a stab at seeing the Southwest Tour, I'd say they reached 30-35 MPH tops when I chased them. For all I know they could potentially go faster now that the unit has more miles since restoration though, but I can't imagine it would ever be too much quicker. Best of luck with your chase!

couple of questions, are the 2nd yellow tenders oil tanks needed due to the oil conversions? and the 3rd last car has what seems to be a power unit on the roof, does it not have enough output to eliminate the diesel loco? if its not a power unit what is it?
@royalhudsonrailvideos
@royalhudsonrailvideos 4 жыл бұрын
The extra water tenders are intended to house extra water for longer excursions. They feed into the locomotives. As for the third to last car, that car should be a generator to provide power to the rest of the business cars, while the locomotive is there to provide dynamic braking for the steam locomotives and an extra boost if needed.

AMAZING video, really great shots! One question though: why is there a diesel locomotive attached to the train if they've got two steam locos to pull it?
@frankwaters748

Thank you! The diesel locomotive is there to provide dynamic braking for the train, as steam locomotives are obviously from the era before dynamic braking became a thing in locomotives.

Why does the big boy need the844 and another Diesel on the back assisting it?
@royalhudsonrailvideos
@royalhudsonrailvideos 5 жыл бұрын
The 844 originally wasn't supposed to be with the train, it was added to be a double header within weeks of the trip. Although in the end, it and the diesel were basically there as extra power and braking as the Big Boy is still breaking in after the restoration. Also, the diesel provides dynamic braking. Thanks for watching!

@@royalhudsonrailvideos the issue here on the east coast especially in NJ, their concern is with insurance. You know someone has to make out for an event. We use to have a steam train come through for the holiday (toys for tots) and fall foliage seasons. But they put a "damper" on it. You should have seen the crowd gather for these steam events. Whoever makes these decisions has backwards thinking. This is part of our American Heritage.

Thanks UP from the great white north! You guys rock! Now, if only the Canadian Pacific could follow your example of true resolve! So, watching the big boy videos, and reading the comments. A common comment would come up often: “never in my lifetime would I ever think to see a big boy running the rails once again!” I tip my hat to the hard working steam crew of the Union Pacific. So, I say this with great sadness, never in my lifetime would I ever see a Selkirk locomotive running. Too young to have ever seen them before, and sadly, probably would never see one run at all. Keith, do you hear the subtle point I am trying to make? Well, do ya? Where’s the 2816? Oh, hear she is: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nL2Tfa110rjIpZc.html Never in my lifetime do I feel I would ever see the beautiful Canadian Pacific 2816 run ever and ever again.................

CP did have a steam program, Hunter Harrison destroyed it! Hopefully Keith will get his head out of the sand and start it up again. Rumors were they tried for Canada 150 back in 2017, but with the morel destruction Hunter did to the formal steam program employees, they couldn’t get the fire lit (no pun intended). So, CP used its vintage diseaseals to pull the 150 celebration train. From 2001 to 2010, I saw my first steam locomotive in person running mainline track speeds and was in awe! Saw and rode the royal Hudson back in her BC rail days, but she never got to stretch her legs. That’s another steam loco sitting in a museum thanks to Gordo selling BC rail to CN! The excuse of a money losing endeavor doesn’t work for me giving that tourism, the endless cruise lines to port in Vancouver, and the world attention Vancouver has received the past 20 years. Imagine a 2860/2816 double header with a restored 5935 joining them through Rogers pass. But I digress, never in my lifetime..........

You don't own the atmosphere and the rest of us shouldn't be forced to breathe polluted air.
