4mm Soft Shackle Connections for Highlines?!?!?! Full Highline Tutorial

Күн бұрын➜➜This was the first time I used DOUBLE WRAPPED 1/8" or 3.2mm soft shackles double wrapped as connections for my segmented highlines. We show you how to make them, how we install them and the entire rigging process start to finish. A must watch for anyone rigging highlines at any lengths. ➜➜Measurements: 43" of 4mm Amsteel can make a 8.5" open soft shackle which is perfect for double wrapping 25mm (1") webbing with padded loops. Our tests when I got home ranged from 34kn to 49kn. At 28:55 you say you don't need to tie off the soft release. We actually had one in the park where the knot came undone by all the whips the webbing saw from coming off the line. When it was undone, the soft release slowly came loose, until it came loose fast enough to melt away the loop. The weblock flew 10m past our heads. Since then, we ALWAYS tie a fig8 or something and clip it off with a biner.

Ah no way! I did a tour on my bike out there last year and it was great! There's a "road" heading north out of that campsite you were at which had a named section on the historical map I was navigating with and it was terrifyingly steep. I have no idea *why* it was named, nor could I find any other reference to it, but wowza!

Great video, this is the kind of content I subscribed for. Excited for the break test of the double wrapped 4mm soft shackle and possibly triple wrapped 3mm. The 'double-u' system of connecting the backups seems a bit bulky, is there anyway you could use 4mm for this too?

double wrapped 4mm is the only way and that is bulky. It is all about minimize head size. It is all the same amount of dyneema at the end of the day

So was wondering if you had ever heard of/used Gaffer tape? It leaves no residue and is fabric based (and similar strength to duct tape). Might be nice for your applications!

I mean, I know that gaffer tape is supposed to leave no residue, but that’s when you use it for gaffering. There’s enough load on these applications that I would expect the glue on gaffer tape to leave residue. It doesn’t do great with heat.

Won't smaller diameter soft shackles kink a lot more the webbing loops ? Going with 4mm (or even 3mm as you mentioned in the summary) isn't risky for the sewn loop strength ? Please break test this !

You know what would be a really cool test? Ice screws and v threading, because ice seems terrifying from an outside perspective. That and we are heading into winter in the northern hemisphere, so it would fit.

11:40 you say: if this fails in an inov, you're dead. But if both backups are connected with the longer loop, you only get a rough fall, but you are not dead.

Have you tried “Back wrapping” your electrical tape, sticky side up, on the first layer then glue side down? Never tried it on a highline but it works great on wire and wire rope.

There also exists electrical “tape” with no adhesive. You wraps the first couple with the “tape” and finish off with regular tape.

hey Ryan, did you force 10kn pressure on the freshly made 4mm soft shackles so that the button knots settle before you connected the segments or you just force pulled them as mush as you could and you trusted that the noose of the softshackles would not slip? thank you for all your time you have invested in sharing all these info and stoke with everyone

Would you use soft thimbles for the double wrapped 3 mils or do you think the padding in the sewn loops is enough?

Is there any reason not to use a belay device instead of the munter when controlling the soft release? It would mean that in the brake position you'd be pulling towards yourself and away from the edge which seems like it would be easier to control, and then the backup would engage the brake as well if needed.

Hey! my question is will the smaller dynema diameters diminish the longevity of the rig or be more vulnerable to longer term wear and tear than the thicker stuff.

The concern is the thinner material could cut the webbing under tension. Padded loops and double wrapped proved to be fine in our initial tests here at the lab.

god I feel old... the best tape ever is knee tape, the brown stuff with the ridiculous stick. I don't even know what they call it now, last bought it in 1994 or '92 so old idgaf

What would be the absolute lightest 20m parkline set up? Could you hand tension or do you need two wire gate biners? Can you get away without a linelock? What to use for slings? Can you use soft shackles anywhere? What's the absolute lightest webbing available?

Some parts of your question you have to find out yourself (like what's the lightest webbing), but my super light setup is this: One dyneema sling, long enough to fit around a tree. Two Carabiners 20m Equilibrium slim webbing I tie one end of the line around a tree and do a primitive on the other side. That way I can tension with a 4:1 and don't need a softrelease or linelock or anything. I think it is less than 1kg. With small biners and dyneema webbing you could probably get down to 600g. Instead of any tensioning you could also put the anchors up high and handtension without biners, that would save you like 100g

I've gone for moonwalk (34g/m) over equilibrium slim (26g/m) because I don't really walk rodeo and want to walk longer than 20m but might look into getting some for a super UL 15m line.

Just kind of wondering why quicklinks or heavy duty carabiners aren't used between sewn loop ends? I mean to make the webbing one piece not to connect the backup to the mainline, like why did you say not to do that? Is it dangerous? Just wondering.

I Imagine because they'd be dangerous to step on and it would add to much weight to the line, they'd have to be steel. But maybe there's more than one reason.

16:38 that twist shackle is orientated wrong. The pin should be on the rope and the bow should be on the blue spanset. Also that polypropylene rope is splice able like dyneema and would probably hold around 5 kn (maybe some break tests would be helpful)

@@turkeyphant the shackle is more of an aesthetics thing so orientation doesn't really matter but there was an opportunity to make it look nicer so there's that. the poly rope is hollow, (like amsteel) so that means it can be spliced. splices hold around 90-95% of a ropes strength so it would be a lot stronger than a overhand knot like what was in the video
