Either the troops knew the L3 product was trash and never used it or they never bothered to open the box because no matter how cool the gear is, no soldier wants to be the slow camel wearing glasses while humping all that heavy gear all over Timbuktu. @@ilovefreeski I was being more careful than it may appear, I didn’t want to cause any damage. The adjustment screws on NGALs are small. Not a huge fan, I like the larger PEQ style hardware

Heyo, I feel like you missed a YUGE point about the cost differential, that being: if a company sells a product to the US government, it has to be priced the same as it would be for an individual citizen, “off the shelf”. By marking the prices high, L3 ensures they’ll recoup their engineering and certification costs, while also guaranteeing they’ll get a premium price tag that “somebody” (taxpayers) will buy regardless of the actual cost and profit margin.

This right here. L3 does not care about private joe sales, they chase government contract and they are not allowed to mark up contract prices. This means private citizens are free to pay bribed contract prices

The high cost of the L3 and others is greed, they have government contracts and over charge the government for these products and so we as a citizen want the same gear as the military we also have to pay high price point. Also the government bureaucrats that sign off on these contracts are part of the problem. These contracts could be negotiated but they don’t and it cost us the taxpayers.

I haven't watched all the way yet, so you may cover this; L3 has a spotty at best track record for quality with their lasers. Guts pulling out when removing the plug, etc. Since you have to go "gray market" when buying a full power L3, you will have *ZERO* warranty or support. And if you send it in to them, they will confiscate it. Generally speaking, their civilian offerings suck and cost well into the $1k-2k+ category. These big .gov contract companies give zero effs about the regular consumer, and the government regulating things further ruins things.

L3 is definitely brighter, but to its detriment really washing out targets without any photonic barriers. The Somogear seems underpowered and not narrow. The Invisible Sight is super clean and just right powered to not wash out details. Not accounting for sturdiness and longevity, the Invisible Sight is the very clear winner to my eyes.

Probably because l3 actually engineered their NGAL to efficiently shape the beam whereas the clones are just trying to mimic the real deal

Great series of videos, it has helped me a ton! If you still have these, could you take a measurement or the recoil lugs thickness? I ordered the Somogear and was thinking about adhering a flat square piece of rubber to the bottom the makeup for the lack of recoil lugs that would hopefully prolong it's life on my SCAR platforms. The lugs are roughly the thickness of a pic rail segment opening.

From what I can tell, the L3 washes eceryrhing out and makes target acquisition more difficult. Thanks for the comparison. I think I'll stick with my knock off that I distinguish what I'm shooting at.

I kept the gain on the PVS 14 the same so as to be fair, you could turn it down and get less washout. Based on the metered numbers the L3 has a stronger output so at the same gain level it would make sense it looks more washed out comparatively.

They now have a "solution ". They include a couple rubber/plastic pic rail spacers included in the box. Fixed my issue on my 22. AR rail. Somogear ngal that is.

The L3 illuminator is brighter but not as clear as the others. Its like a bright fuzz ball. Invisible sight seemed better for me. Especially for the price point

They each have pros and cons. Currently the IS lead time isn’t great. The somo has a cleaner illuminator, but it can’t narrow or widen as much as the IS. So you have to way out the pros and cons

2 of the 3 functions are on the IR spectrum, so yes you’d need night vision to use it. Wouldn’t be worth the money for using it as a visible laser. Budget and NV don’t really go in a sentence together.. there are digital options, or you can score second hand PVS 14’s for around $2k but most people don’t consider that “budget” dollar amounts. Keep in mind, it’s common to drop $10k on a set of high spec NV binos

Which NGAL clone are you trying to confirm the generation? The somo can work with NGAL diffusers but doesn’t come with diffusers.

@@4MRRanch I'm not understanding the question. If you're asking about the clone, I'd consider one of these you reviewed in the video. If you're asking about the MAWL, it's just a lot of cash for a regular joe to dump into a tool I can't leverage as much as say a thermal drone. A stellar thermal camera will command like 5k, but the MAWL would cover like half that.

Are you planning on doing any live fire testing? So far, every review I've watched about these knockoff IR devices is that they don't hold zero like the "real thing" and that's a huge issue. There is zero point in having an IR laser if it can't hold zero.

Does the L3 NGAL battery cap fit the invisiblesight NGAL? I have 2 InvisibleSight full power Mk4 NGAL's on the way and I want to get the real NGAL battery cap for my units. I'm not sure if the thread pattern is the same between the L3 NGAL and the IS NGAL.

Have you done any inclement weather testing with the somogear? I have about 1000 rounds through mine and a 3 day force on force and everything is running great on it, I am just worried about water resistance and dont really want to roll the dice on testing it. Also, phenomenal videos, thank you

I haven’t exposed the solo to adverse conditions. It’s not advertised as water sealed so I didn’t test for that.

So correct me if im wrong but it seems like there really isnt an actual point in getting the "real" NGAL? From the comparison part alone it seems like i can kit out both of my rifles, and one for my friend using the more expensive of the two clones or getting like 10 of the cheaper clones all with, for all intents and purposes, the same performance. Like i feel like the clones the last 3-5 years have been so close in performance that its almost stupid to buy the real thing, the diminishing returns with price are staggering. The L3 does have a bit better performance in certain areas yes but is it worth 4 times or even 10 times the price? EDIT: BTW defiantly subscribing now too, not many people do straight up comparisons like this with no bullshit filler.

Just keep in mind this was NOT a long term reliability comparison. Neither clone is water sealed like the L3, so expose it to a wet environment and the clone may fail you. Do I think L3 should charge $4k+? No. But do also keep in mind it’s made in the U.S., with workings recieving probably reasonable U.S. wages and benefits, and was engineered by people in the U.S. so that adds to some of the cost. These US made devices also have to deal with regulations/certifications the clones simple just ignore.

@@4MRRanch Very true but i cant see why you couldn't just coat it with a little water repellent spray or hell put it in some jerry rigged sort of bag if it demands it. i get the reason why alot of NV gear is so expensive but for people that arent either well of/rich or arent active service/LEO i believe this will work more than well enough. "10% the cost for 80% the performance" as i always say.

Now, if only we can get quality night vision for a similar price point, everything I’ve seen, so far, has been far more than someone who doesn’t have a high paying job could afford. Even the DIY (3D printed) night vision is out of my price range

Tubes are a complicated technology to manufacture. It will be some time before a viable “knock off” can be made on the analog side of the house. That said, digital NV is getting better and cheaper

It's crazy that they charge so much for the ngal and the fit and finish it so bad. With all the Chinese lasers coming out I am quickly realizing just how much profit companies like L3 and B.E. Meyers are making. Also I am very curious to see how the new Mk4 NGAL clone from invisible sight will compare. If their 500 dollar units are that good then I would bet their 1000 dollar unit will be awe inspiring lol

Its worse than that. If it were just a greed thing...we could cut that out when it really truly mattered. You know...like if a world war were to break out...much like the one that is ongoing....the reason for the cost excess is partly greed of course but the primary cause is regulations, paying for the R+D/tooling/actual work to create the units, and most of all cost of labor. If we do not create a literal revolution in manufacturing, or SIGNIFICANTLY CUT THE FAT we will lose that war. And it will have been because of corporate greed and too much government regulation. Not just at the moment in time but for fking decades and it still wasnt enough for those pieces of shit. WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

I haven’t vetted them to more than 5.56 mostly. The somo NGAL was fired on a 12 gauge to see if it would flicker off (it didn’t) but it wasn’t long term use. If you haven’t seen my dedicated reviews on either, I’d suggest checking them out.

The moment someone invents something good..someone else WILL make it cheaper...and most of the time it happens in Asia. In come different taxes, production and employee costs, quality certifications and military contract requirements and the prives vary...immensely.

How do civilians get their hands on actual unused L3 hardware? Is it from QA rejections? That could be why they have issues with something like the weird soft edge on the illuminator you have. Maybe the waterproofing sealant got onto the edges of the reflector? Anything that is expensive in the military is serially controlled and "losing" a serially controlled item is a great way to have a bad time. I can't imagine anyone willing to ruin their life over $4k in a unit that both has access to high end gear and is also treated like adults with normal levels of accountability instead of children who have to be inspected every time they walk outside.

This gear is not illegal to own as a civilian, it’s just regulated such that a formal business can’t sell to somebody lacking credentials. There’s a gray market (not black market) of people selling these second hand for substantial markup

@@4MRRanch Absolutely but if its capable of holding up even 20% the length of the real deal I'd call it a win. Its also replaceable FP units for those of us on the civ side aren't since L3 will confiscate it if you try and get it repaired. I'd rather use and abuse something I can actually feasibly replace. Save the L3 for the apocalypse.

Both cooked have held fine, 800+ rounds to date through the somo and 500 and counting through the invisblesigt. No issues yet, I have full length reviews on both on my channel.

Those are all very different options. Laserspeed has a better illuminator divergence range, clean illuminators, but are larger and heavier. So depends on your priority

The problem with the L3 is the hot spot in the middle with the very soft edge is very distracting. The IS even brightness illuminator cone is much easier to eye, just better designed.

It may be the gain on my night vision turned up too high for the L3, it definitely has stronger output.

can you even really get your hands on the invisible sight? It seems like his website has nothing for sale and all other online offers are looking at $1000+ which is more or less silly to pay for a knock off product. Even if it is in competition it is still a knock off I also seem to keep reading that it takes months to receive and almost borderlines being a scam if you will ever receive the item.
