Probably because l3 actually engineered their NGAL to efficiently shape the beam whereas the clones are just trying to mimic the real deal

I kept the gain on the PVS 14 the same so as to be fair, you could turn it down and get less washout. Based on the metered numbers the L3 has a stronger output so at the same gain level it would make sense it looks more washed out comparatively.

The lugs are roughly the thickness of a pic rail segment opening.

@@4MRRanch ah ok, so the lugs fit down into a pic rail opening rather than not top of a pic rail segment. I guess I was thinking it sat on a pic rail segment for added surface area connection for stability.

2 of the 3 functions are on the IR spectrum, so yes you’d need night vision to use it. Wouldn’t be worth the money for using it as a visible laser. Budget and NV don’t really go in a sentence together.. there are digital options, or you can score second hand PVS 14’s for around $2k but most people don’t consider that “budget” dollar amounts. Keep in mind, it’s common to drop $10k on a set of high spec NV binos

No play in the IS or l3, the somo is somewhat temperamental to rail fitment

They now have a "solution ". They include a couple rubber/plastic pic rail spacers included in the box. Fixed my issue on my 22. AR rail. Somogear ngal that is.

Not really, a lot of it goes to testing and certification- certifications that the Chinese don’t have to go through, nor the pay between American labor and forced labor. And that has to include all design, lawyers, tooling and assembly line. And that’s just what you know of. There’s also destructive testing for every lot built. The company could have spent 5 yrs perfecting the design in order for it to pass the mil-spec requirements. Where the Chinese just buy one, backwards engineer and they have a product within 6 months, no testing, no lawyers … just copy and paste. And of course there’s profit, where the Chinese don’t care as much as they have less to lose. Can a business make a a $3500 part and sell for $500 to be competitive? Wait till you are in business and you have to front all the risks, pay & benefits, rent etc.

They each have pros and cons. Currently the IS lead time isn’t great. The somo has a cleaner illuminator, but it can’t narrow or widen as much as the IS. So you have to way out the pros and cons

Tubes are a complicated technology to manufacture. It will be some time before a viable “knock off” can be made on the analog side of the house. That said, digital NV is getting better and cheaper

Get an extra credit card just for toys. Over the years, that’s how I got both my ACOG and my PVS-7Ds.

Just keep in mind this was NOT a long term reliability comparison. Neither clone is water sealed like the L3, so expose it to a wet environment and the clone may fail you. Do I think L3 should charge $4k+? No. But do also keep in mind it’s made in the U.S., with workings recieving probably reasonable U.S. wages and benefits, and was engineered by people in the U.S. so that adds to some of the cost. These US made devices also have to deal with regulations/certifications the clones simple just ignore.

@@4MRRanch Very true but i cant see why you couldn't just coat it with a little water repellent spray or hell put it in some jerry rigged sort of bag if it demands it. i get the reason why alot of NV gear is so expensive but for people that arent either well of/rich or arent active service/LEO i believe this will work more than well enough. "10% the cost for 80% the performance" as i always say.

Its worse than that. If it were just a greed thing...we could cut that out when it really truly mattered. You know...like if a world war were to break out...much like the one that is ongoing....the reason for the cost excess is partly greed of course but the primary cause is regulations, paying for the R+D/tooling/actual work to create the units, and most of all cost of labor. If we do not create a literal revolution in manufacturing, or SIGNIFICANTLY CUT THE FAT we will lose that war. And it will have been because of corporate greed and too much government regulation. Not just at the moment in time but for fking decades and it still wasnt enough for those pieces of shit. WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

The MK4 will have better quality control, improved water sealing, and if I recall correctly a stronger illuminator

@@4MRRanch Absolutely but if its capable of holding up even 20% the length of the real deal I'd call it a win. Its also replaceable FP units for those of us on the civ side aren't since L3 will confiscate it if you try and get it repaired. I'd rather use and abuse something I can actually feasibly replace. Save the L3 for the apocalypse.

If you're asking about the MAWL, it's just a lot of cash for a regular joe to dump into a tool I can't leverage as much as say a thermal drone. A stellar thermal camera will command like 5k, but the MAWL would cover like half that.

I haven’t vetted them to more than 5.56 mostly. The somo NGAL was fired on a 12 gauge to see if it would flicker off (it didn’t) but it wasn’t long term use. If you haven’t seen my dedicated reviews on either, I’d suggest checking them out.

Those are all very different options. Laserspeed has a better illuminator divergence range, clean illuminators, but are larger and heavier. So depends on your priority

Both cooked have held fine, 800+ rounds to date through the somo and 500 and counting through the invisblesigt. No issues yet, I have full length reviews on both on my channel.

I have 400 rounds on my Ngal, it has been banged into a door frame at least twice and fell my rifle has been knocked over multiple times… still holding zero.
