4Runner Bumper Valance Swap

A video guide for swapping out your 4Runner rear bumper valance. I put this together on my second time doing it as the first time swapping from silver to black, I didn’t have a video resource. There are some great blog guides out there, but I wanted to create a video guide to supplement to provide a different perspective on the process.
If you are doing this, your 4Runner should have a valance already. The parts you will need to buy are:
PART NAME: Retainer sub-assembly
PART NUMBER: 7539235220
QTY: 13
PART NAME: Black valance panel (Rear, Lower)
PART NUMBER: 5216935120
QTY: 1
I bought both of these from a Toyota. There are many dealerships and each has a different price for the unit + shipping price so look around. Googling the part number should return part and show the different Toyota part stores through dealerships that have the part available.

Chris, thank you so much for this video. I replaced the valance on my 2010 4Runner yesterday using your video. FYI, I am a 60+ woman who has never done anything like this in my life! Wouldn’t have tackled it without your video!

I just replaced the rear valence on my 2018 TRD off road 4runner. I couldn't have done it without your video. I appreciate the advice. I reused all the clips on the front and rear valence.

Thanks so much for this video! If anyone is afraid to take their bumper off, just take your time and follow this video step by step. I did the front and rear valance, avoiding taking my front bumper off and dreading the rear, but the rear was way easier following this video.

Awesome stuff man! Somebody rear ended me and my valance is literally hanging from the same spot yours was damaged and I had no idea what that part was even called until I saw this video. It's great to know that it is easy to replace yourself instead of having to pay more to take it to a shop. Thanks again man this helps out big time!

Thanks Reid! Sorry to hear about the accident - hope you're okay! Fortunately the valance gives you an extra little later of plastic to avoid having to swap out the entire bumper. Good luck with the repairs :)

Thanks for actually showing the pulling of the bumper off man with the clips. I ordered some extra clips just in case I break a few when swapping but you made it look easy enough.

Thanks for making this video! I just swapped out the front and rear silver valances for the black ones. All in the front and rear took about 75 mins. I have silver valances if some one needs them.

Thank you sir for this video, I pulled my rear bumper because some idiot hit me and broke my original bumper with no valance, I went and bought an used bumper with a valance but I didn't know they took those clips, my bad LOL, and when re-installing found out one of the trim to body sides wouldn't clip back to place well, I'll have to go and do as you showed here and see if that helps..

Hi Jaime! Sorry to hear about the accident, that's a huge bummer! Hope you are all okay! Yeah, fortunately the valance is a pretty easily repaired part, but it sounds like there was more than just valance damage if those bumper clips were busted too. I haven't. dove into those outside of needing to remove the bumper so I don't have much advice there. Hope the repair went well!

We did not, the puncture/crack was mostly covered by the valance so we just cleaned it the best we could and covered it with the valance

Hi Chris, thats for the video. Just damaged the valance on my brand new 2022 4Runner and have been trying to figure out what to do about it. Do you happen to know where to get a silver valance? Also, one of the pop tabs is missing (not the ones on the mud flaps, but rather one of the ones on the underneath that you said are similar to those on the mud flaps). Do you know where to get those? Thanks!

Hmm, do you know what minute of the video you are seeing those other pop tabs? As for the silver valance, if you google "silver rear bumper valance 4runner" you can find some stuff pretty easily from 3rd part vendors that seem to be a little less expensive that through Toyota directly. If you want to get it from Toyota, search for "Toyota

Considering swapping out my silver valences but the only part that gives me pause is pulling the bumper off and snapping it back on. Looks like there is a lot of flexing in the plastic and potential to break a clip on the actual bumper or warp the bumper which would be a huge headache. Then there are the inevitable scratches from handling it all, makes me wonder if it's worth it. Great video though.

Having done it twice, I can confirm that the likelihood of breaking one of those clips would be pretty low. And as long as you are smart about how you set down the bumper (i.e. put it on towels, etc.) then you're probably not going to introduce scratches any worse than a pebble or two hitting on the freeway. Beyond that though...it's a 4runner

That would be 10mm socket attached to a ratchet.

Would you recommend buying new tabs if they are all still in place?

You probably don’t need to. They are about $13 all together, so it’s not a huge investment to swap them out. A few of mine felt like sturdy after pulling it out, but I really don’t see how they could have been jostled loose in the event that i were to have re-used them.

I’m going to change on my 2022 4Runner just a week old but I was curious why do I need valance plastic white pop out clips ? Can I reuse the same I already have on ?

Yeah - you can definitely re-use them! Some of mine were busted so I got whole new set.

Do you think it'd be possible to lay under the rear bumper and reach up into the valence area from under the car and remove the fasteners without having to take the whole bumper off? I haven't checked if there's even enough room in the rear....I know people have done that with the front bumper valence though...

I don't think so. I had tried to do that the first time we swapped the valance about 2 years ago, and I don't recall that being possible. Though I may have tried and given up after a few minutes. Honestly, pulling the bumper off is WAY easier than I would have expected, and goes back together very easily.

That's called the "rear bumper panel"!

My 2023 SR5 premium is all one piece, it's the whole bumper at least on the front

Hey Chris I have a 2021 TRD off-road forerunner I want to replace my valance from silver to black the problem is the dealership only excepts Vin numbers to order the part which it does not come in black do you know if your 2019 would fit on my 2021? If so can you give me the part number? Including the front I want in black as well

Hey Mike - It looks like valance part number is the same for 2014-2022. If you google the part number you'll see all of the Toyota shops that sell it online (no VIN required). 5216935120

@@ChrisMeierSF Thanks Chris I’m definitely looking for an OEM part I’m worried about warping in hot temperatures I did more research from dealership to dealership and ended up finding an excellent parts manager at a ship in Capitola California I found out that you can get these painted or unfinished in black which I placed my order I can’t wait to install thank you for responding

I don't believe so. The valance (the black portion) is specific to the bumpers on the TRD models. The TRD models have a rear bumper panel with slots for the valance to fit into (and clipped in on the opposite side). The Limited and SR5 models have a different rear bumper panel that does not have those slots/cut outs. I'd imagine the way in which you pull off the rear bumper panel is the same, but adding a valance to a stock bumper would not be possible.

I sold the first one I had (silver) and the one I pulled off in this video was cracked/beat up so I tossed it.

So much work for the valance lol, I just picked up a used 2020 4runner TRD Off Road primium and my valance is duct taped on :(

Haha too true! In the grand scheme of things it's not that challenging (no bolts in weird places, lifting required, or special tools). But you can grab a beer and knock it out in an hour. FWIW, the front takes a lot longer!

@@Chris4R I was debating just drilling holes and using some left over plastic pop rivets. I think my clips are broken off on one side. It was a rental before I bought it.

@@brakesforsnakes757 That's correct! Just a PITA to get your hands up into the right places to pop the tabs loose. To be fair though, it's less of a PITA than taking the front bumper off

My only regret when replacing the valance was not having a piece of carpet to place the bumper cover on as I scratched the corners where it made contact with the concrete. Other than that, easy peasy.
