Getting rid of the "Mom Butt" (Sagging Rear Suspension) on a Toyota 4Runner (2nd Generation).
Replacing a 2nd Generation Toyota 4Runner Rear Suspension with:
Moog CC255 Coil Spring Set ($60 per pair)
KYB 565059 MonoMax Gas Shock ($56 each)
Step 1: Secure front wheels (with wheel stoppers)
Step 2: Lift Rear Frame
Step 3: Loosen both rear wheel lug nuts (22mm socket)
Step 4: Lift Rear Differential Gear Box (Pumpkin)
Step 5: Remove Rear Wheels
Step 6: Remove Stabilizers (14mm socket)
Step 7: Lower Rear Differential Gearbox (Pumpkin)
Step 8: Remove Shocks (12mm, 14mm, 17mm wrenches)
Step 9: Remove Suspension Spring (brute force)
Step 10: Install new Suspension Springs (Moog CC255 Coil Spring)
Step 11: Install Shocks (KYB 565059 MonoMax Gas Shock)
Step 12: Re-Install Stabilizers
Step 13: Re-Install Wheels
Step 14: Lower Rear Body
Step 15: Test Drive "Ol' Betsie"
Good Luck and let me know how you guys did....Don't forget to make sure the brake line brackets are loose enough to allow brake line movement during the rear axle flex.

Old thread, but I had a 87 (that I wish I could find and get back) that I installed a 4.3 in from mostly scratch down to a set of headers/exhaust. It also had the notorious 'Butt-Sag' but after I implemented my Cheap DIY fix, no more problems !

Come on guys say it, it’ll help him. Hey body to be honest, still have that “ mom but “ , at least from my point of view, not sure how it feels but it looks the same. I have a 94 with 124xxx on it, but it needs this job, that’s the reason I watched your video. You did a great job, you have teach us all “ how to do it” now we need to know what to use , but the results doesn’t depend on you because you did what your were supposed to do. From the left side of my heart “ THANK YOU AMIGO”

Coil spacers would help with the sag. The lighting was a little dark but good video none the less. Thanks

Thanks Kevin, my brother didn’t tell me that this camera’s ISO was too low. Newbie mistake. Daystar 1.25 in spacers were installed eventually. It sure has a lot of compression on the rear springs.
@KevinPDunn
@KevinPDunn 5 жыл бұрын
DIY School , is the high compression very noticeable in the drivability? I will be installing spacers and am curious as what to expect.
@diyschool4695
@diyschool4695 5 жыл бұрын
In my personal opinion Kev, just a little bit with no drastic change to the driving experience. However, turns have less carriage dip, which is a plus. I would recommend these Daystar 1.25 inch spacers, but only do that after replacing the rear springs first. The 1.25in spacers alone will not solve the "Mom Butt" rear sag. I hope that helped in your decision making Kev. Good Luck on the install and let me know how it went.

I like it a lot how you improvise with the bottle jack and block of wood! I do the same thing. Just have to be extra careful about stability, especially working with coiled springs and heavy things. Thanks DIY school!

Thanks for the subscribe Yamato. The block of wood and screw jack was pretty cool, but a little tricky (especially when installing the stiffer replacement springs).

Toyota bottle jack used them for everything ! save a JEEP that popped out a d30 ball joint blocking the trail, LOL he was very grateful :) I was driving a ford at the time, but carry Toyota jack no matter what I drive :) swapping in a e-locker in my 92 4runner & pulling whole rear end so I don't have to be crammed under there cutting welding tapping etc, LOL good video

Looks like about an inch higher comparing beginning and end of video. I just got my Moog factory height springs and now might have to order a spacer to raise it an inch. Still sagging in my opinion.
