Hello tube of YOU. This video is an instructional video on how to remove your dash to get to your speedometer, swap out the bulbs for LEDS, and how to put it all back together. Next week I will be doing the center stack; ie. temperature gauges, fuel economy, temperature gauge, etc. I will also be installing LED throughout the 4Runner.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! Damage may occur if done improperly.
Welcome back or Welcome if this is your first time! My name is Smithey and this channel focuses on mainly trucks: maintenance, how to’s, instructional videos, tech videos, and some travel. Stay tuned for more videos and subscribe to follow along in my journey! Enjoy!
About Me: My name is Joey Smithey. I am 31 years young. 11 years down in the military, 9 to go. I have experienced the housing crisis in California and I enjoyed it so much I am doing it again in North Carolina (just waiting on my camper shell for my truck). I have lived in a truck before, then a cargo van, then a 2019 4Runner and now living in my 2008 Toyota 4Runner. I will be converting it periodically and will be posting videos of my progress and the adventures that are soon to follow! I hope you enjoy!

I also explain what I’m gonna do first so people aren’t just watching me do something and get lost. And for those that hear it and don’t want to watch, don’t have to sit through the whole thing to figure out what I’m doing. I try to help! Again, I appreciate the kind words.

I love the detail in your video with step-by-step instructions, tips & tricks and precautions. VERY well done. I don't care so much about the aesthetics of color. The white looks great but orange is better for maintaining night vision. However, I am very interested in replacing the six $7 bulbs that burn out in the environmental cluster with reliable "life of the car" LEDs.

how many additional lights does the gage cluster take? looking to do this as well, but not planning on messing with the extra lights (4wd, seatbelt, etc), just the ones smitheys noted - "I ended up using 14 LEDs: 3 for the LCD screen (mileage display), 2 for the RPMs, three for the speedometer, 1 for the fuel, and 1 for the temperature gauge. The last 4 were the shift indicators (Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive)."

@smitheys
@smitheys 3 жыл бұрын
It only goes on one way. You can fix it two ways: turn off the truck and put the needle pointing just past the empty line. Or: fill your tank all the way up, put your dash back in and leave the clear cover off and then point the needle on the full line with the ignition on but the truck off. You have to drive it a little bit either way for it to recalibrate itself, maybe a tank or two.

Thanks Nick! Glad I could help out and it turned out alright. As for the dash lights, the only thing I can think of is the dimmer switch. You may have turned it all the way up, locking it on. Try turning it down. If you followed along in the video, nothing done would cause them to stay on

@smitheys
@smitheys 2 жыл бұрын
No, that shouldn’t have happened. Did they work before, like when you turned the key on did they briefly turn on and off before you changed the LED’s? Try unplugging and plugging the cluster back in. Maybe you didn’t plug it in all the way or you bent some pins? If that don’t work, try disconnecting the negative terminal and leaving it for at least 15 minutes. There really isn’t a way to mess anything up, all you’ve done is changed the bulbs.

Very cool video, thank you. I have a 05 V8 4Runner and recently I am having some issues with I think the gauge cluster? Don’t really know, was hoping you could give me some suggestions on what it might be? So to start my fob/antitheft stopped working, checked battery on both truck and fob, not that 🤔. Also the time and trip mileage saver always reset when I shut the truck/ignition off. The gauges also do a little flickering before returning to their spot. I am perplexed, thought maybe it was a part of the motherboard but why does everything function while ignition is on or while driving it. It really isn’t a big deal. I will just keep driving it like this, just have no alarm and have to unlock my door manually 🤨 Any help would be greatly appreciated before I have it looked at a steelership lol. Cheers

Thank you so much! I’m sorry you’re having issues with your Runner. Here’s a few ideas to get you started. The very first thing I would do is check your fuses. After that, check your grounds. Sounds like one may be lose or started corroding. 4Runners are famous for rust, especially 4th gens. I’m sure it’s one of those, if not, take the battery out and go get it tested. They say they can test them in the vehicle, but don’t trust it. Get an accurate reading with it out and disconnected for an hour or so. Hope this helps!

@@smitheys thank you so much, I always had a feeling it was battery related, I took it in for an oil change, they did check my battery, said it ok but the ground was dirty, so they cleaned it up for me and sent me on my way, told me it was the bcm, Im pretty sure it’s not that. Not typical of these trucks. Anyways so back to battery testing like you said to do 🙌🏼 So weird how everything works while ignition is on but only resets those 2 things, and obviously no power to the anti theft and fob. Ok thanks again fellow 4Runner fan.

@smitheys
@smitheys 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget to check the fuses. Also, your key fob may just be dead from the battery or just dead dead. They can wear out. As for the 5th Gen, yes, there’s been rumors and they also mentioned that this generation may be the last made in Japan. Who knows. Great vehicles though, well you’ve had three so you know. Haha.

So did you solder the led on top of the existing bulbs?
@smitheys
@smitheys 3 жыл бұрын
No, the old bulbs are soldered on by itself. You remove the solder and the old bulb, then put the new LED and solder it on. Easiest way: go to one side of the original bulb, put your soldering iron directly in the center of one side (on the side), while pushing towards the other side. It should pop the solder and then do the same thing to the other side. I really hope that makes sense.

No problem! Hope I helped… in regards to your concern, It’s probably the face. You gotta think, that orange light has been shining on that face for YEEEARS! It probably burnt the color right in. Replacing the face is just as easy, just buy a replacement, pop out the Speedo the same way and just remove the plastic face, then put everything back together in reverse. Mine wasn’t that bad.
