As promised, here is my flip-through of Hewitt Homeschooling Lightning Literature for 4th Grade. We are using it in conjunction with Build Your Library and Torchlight (Level 1 ancient history focus) for our 4th grade homeschool language arts this year. We loved the literature-based approach of the 3rd grade level (see link below for my flipthrough of Level 3), so we decided to stick with it for 4th grade for my son (who turns 10 this fall) AND start the 1st grade level with my middle daughter (who turns 7 this winter).

This is reminds me so much of Bravewriter and how you work through the Arrows guides. I particularly liked hearing that book list. It was very diverse and inclusive and many of those books I have. Thanks so much. I love learning about different curriculum 😉 Be well

Yay! I’ve been waiting on this, semi-stalking your page daily lol. 😂 Thank you! It looks great but I’m still undecided. Help, Tanya!! 😆 We’re attending CC this year but the daughter is gifted, and needs more. I hope this is it. I’ve been even thinking about a few Literature guides as add-ons to Writing & Rhetoric that we already own. Argh 😤 so many choices! Thank you for this!! 💗

I think she would! We don’t limit the reading to only these books, so G didn’t feel hemmed in by the selections. And she spaced out the reading assignments very gently - so the kids have ample time to do extra outside reading. And we have loved all the book selections.

Are you still combining Torchlight & BYL? I'm adding Lightning Literature 3 for the fall (after seeing your review!) and I've gone through TL & BYL books and made an excel spreadsheet for the next 3 years (crazy! yes lol) . My question how are you adding all the books into your homeschool schedule? I'm trying to go through and omit certain ones or bump them ahead (now that I've seen this review, I'll likely move where mountain meets the moon for example). Love your reviews, curious to see level 1 :D

I’m in the process of planning it out for next year, as we still have several books in both TL and BYL to finish. First, I list the book progression for HHLL, then I see whether any books overlap and shift/select the activities from BYL/TL that correspond to the HHLL allotted week for that particular book. Several TL books have become nighttime readalouds, whereas the BYL stays in the daytime curricula.

Aloha! Recently came across your page on my hunt for a language arts curriculum for my 3 grade school children (soon to be 1st, 4th, & 6th). Would you use this curriculum as a group study? For example, if I wanted to refresh all of my kiddos as we will be “de-schooling” once their distance learning is finished would I be able to use one level as a family study? I hope that makes sense and I’m loving your channel!
@ProjectHappyHome

I think several of the readers are appropriate for all ages, but some are not. Also, the grammar/comp assignments are geared for the designated grade level. But I use several of the readers as group readalouds. Hope that helps!

How do they teach the various composition assignments in the teachers guide? Are there examples or graphic organizers to piece the writing together?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
No, there are not. And if your child isn’t naturally strong with the writing process, I’d suggest supplementing. For example, my son is a pretty strong creative writer, but I have supplemented Lightning Lit’s Grade 5 with IEW’s new Structure and Style level A to help his essay writing skills.

Hi Tania, thanks for your review. Now that you are using IEW, do you still using the composition part? Do you think that both works well together? Thanks!
@ProjectHappyHome

We didn't use too much of the composition part this year because we had a lot on our plate with IEW. I choose about 4-5 writing assignments from Lightning Lit and sprinkled them throughout the year. :)

Hi! Thanks so much for these in depth reviews. They are so helpful! My son is 9.5 and is a very strong reader, but not a strong writer. Would you recommend grade 3 or grade 4? Thanks!
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, the LL program is great for reading comprehension and grammar, but weakest for writing instruction. If your son struggles as a writer, I would look into other supplemental writing programs (like IEW, for example). The readers and grammar lessons in LL are spot-on accurate for grade levels in my opinion. So in your case, it would depend on how he would respond to the grammar lessons. I’m sure he could handle the higher grade readers, but the grammar may be challenging.
@homelifewithus

Hello ! How do you schedule three different LL levels between the kids? What are you doing along side with them vs what they are doing independently? I’m using two different levels and there are some days that are completely being missed/skipped. Also, do you do the additional suggested reading at times?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
It can be tough for sure - this is our second year using 2 different levels (my youngest isn't using it yet). We just finished a year with Grade 1 and Grade 4 of Lightning Literature, and my eldest did his readings on his own (I generally preread the books or read them myself in the evenings). I worked with him on the reading comprehension discussions, compositions, and poetry, but he pretty much handled the rest on his own. I worked with my daughter on all the parts of Grade 1, but we worked on language arts at a different time of the day than her brother. Hope that helps!

How did your son like Tuck Everlasting? I imagine it’s themes and readability is more mature than a 4th grade is typically ready for… curious what your thoughts were in it
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome Жыл бұрын
He loved it, but I agree that the themes are deep for an average 4th grade level. It was probably one of the first books he read that explored deep philosophical questions about mortality and free will. That being said, I think he was ready for it on his level.

Do you think each Lightning Literature level could be split up into separate units and used in any order, or does it seem like it's a definite progression in difficulty from one book to the next? Meaning, if you wanted to do BYL Level 3 as written and just pull (for example) the One and Only Ivan unit from Lightning Literature Level 4 when you get to that book, do you think it could work that way? Does that make sense?!
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that would work easily - not because of the difficulty level of the novels themselves, but because the way the grammar and mechanics section builds on itself as the weeks progress. So I shift the literature component from BYL/TL to coincide with when it is presented in LL. 🙂

Hi, we (like many people) are homeschooling for the first time this year thanks to COVID. It seems like your outlook is pretty similar to mine and I really appreciate all your reviews! Have you used Grade 5 from this program yet? I would love to see it if you have! Also, do you combine this with other grammar or reading workbooks, such as the Evan Moor ones you've reviewed on here or do you use it on its own for language arts? Thanks!
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 4 жыл бұрын
We do combine it with other grammar resources - I should be doing a curriculum lineup video in the next few weeks. While I think that the presentation of grammar concepts is very well done in LL, I like to provide my kids with ample opportunities to practice and supplemental worksheets help immensely. We are planning to use Level 5 next year, and I should have a review up shortly. :)

Thanks for the review. I found it very helpful. Cathy Duffy reviews has this listed as "high parent involvement" would you agree with that? My fourth grader is very independent and I think the weekly "checklist" will enable him to be even more so. If you do consider this high parent involvement, how long do you think a lesson would take? Just wondering your thoughts. Thank you very much.
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
I think it IS high parent involvement in the sense that the writing assignments and reading comprehension discussions are meant to be guided by the parent. So you’re expected to read the book and participate in the discussion of literary elements. We shift around the assignments, but if I did it as scripted, I’d say it would involve at least 10-15 min of MY time every lesson, not counting the reading. For the child, it includes the reading, discussion, grammar page, and composition assignment - so at least 30-45 min on top of reading time.

@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is on grade level, but if her grammar needs work, I’d go with level 3. The writing projects are suitable for a level above/below and the reading selections from L3 are good even for a more advanced reader.

How would you say this matches up for gifted kids? Would they be challenged by doing it at grade level?
@ProjectHappyHome
@ProjectHappyHome 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you could probably go up a level if they are already strong readers/writers. I find that staying at grade level and supplementing with additional vocab/grammar review (plus we have a lot of additional reading from Build Your Library) totally satisfies my 2e (ADHD/gifted) child.

Doesn’t have much for spelling - more emphasis on gramma and reading comp. the vocab is addressed organically in the reading comp questions. And the writing component is less instructional than others.
