I second that! Us EFI 5.8 guys don't really have a junkyard option for the lower intake, unless you're lucky enough to find a first gen Lightning in the Junkyard, which would be like hitting the jackpot. Most have to spend over $900 for the Edelbrock stuff.

So for those asking about extrude honing, i do not remember what year it became popular in hotrodding but early 90's seems to be close to my memory. It's uses a grinding media in a putty like form pressed thru passages to open up and clean them of blockages and in the automotive world to port efi intakes because some of them are impossible to port any other way. It can be used to great effectiveness to add power around a peak not change the actual peak power rpm. it's like porting but with silly putty and a big assed hydraulic ram.

@@richardholdener1727 so you know a what a cut, runners shortened to peak at 6,500rpm, 2.4 mcsa, 320cfm bolted together average runner flow with a 80mm 1,100cfm throttle body tunnel flow gt40 would have made 30plus hp more than any of the tested aftermarket manifolds. To many that would be a better test because it's doing something different than buying what everyone else has bought and getting the same limitations everyone has. We have plenty of back to back testing and we have found it hard to beat a properly ported/modified gt40 manifold. This is a good test though. Keep up the great work!👍

The car is ' 92 LX with a T-5. The long block combo at the time was 306 similar to the video. The cam was an E303 with 1.7s and AFR 165 58cc heads with shorty headers, off road H pipe, & electric fan. With the unported GT-40 it made 274. With the Systemax it made 334rwhp. I did port the GT 40 lower and ran that for awhile but it was a mess. It was THIN in the runners and sucked alot of oil. It made 316rwhp with that setup.

@albertgaspar627

depends on the intake. The long runners of the EFI would get whipped by a single plane, above 4,500 RPM. But a carb cools the intake charge with the venturi effect of its "barrels", while the typical EFI intake has so much surface area, it soaks up a ton of heat. And with the shock towers in the engine compartment blocking airflow from rad to firewall, there's a lot of engine heat to soak up.

354 HP and 374 lb ft of torque would make for a fun Fox body with long tube headers, a full 3" dual exhaust with either Flowmaster or Borla mufflers. I'd love to have a Fox body with a mildly modified 302. I've ridden in a stroked 347 with all of the mods and it made around 600 hp and it was fun and fast, but my 612 whp Civic would've eaten it alive from a dig. In my humble opinion, while I am all about keeping it brand specific, it's hard to beat a Fox body with a well built LS with a good sized turbo on it...OR a GT500 swapped Fox, or a Voodoo swapped Fox, or a built Coyote swapped Fox. One thing I have always wanted to see was a 3.5L EcoBoost swapped Fox...idk why it's always been a dream of mine, but I have always wanted to see what the EcoBoost (hell, 3.5 OR 2.7) can do in a Fox...or even a SN95 (even though they're boats).

One of the big 5.0 Mustang magazines in the day, did a dyno test of intake manifolds. Found the low riser OEM intake used in T'birds and 94 GT Mustangs wasn't as restrictive as thought. That an Extrude Honed stock HO intake could match a GT40--when they were new and expensive, it was a consideration, tho Ron Anderson Performance could port one out and really make some dyno numbers. I would imagine an Extrude Honed Cobra or Explorer could do better, since you aren't going to hone a GT40 tubular. Holley's Systamax reminds me of the $1,000 Saleen intake.

When my mom passed I got her 95 GT convertible 5.0 5 speed, it's pretty soft I mean it scoots along nice but definitely isn't "fast" plus it's blessed with 2:73 gears! Woohoo. I do like the cruise rpm but the gears seem so tall you can turn it to around 55 in 2nd! Anyway I've been researching engine mods and I'm a little discouraged at the gains and all out HP of the 5.0, I'm used to the gains of chevy 350s where 350hp+ is effortless. With 302s 300/325hp isnt as easy and 400hp seems pretty stout for a 302. Am I wasting my money trying to make the 5.0 powerful...? Seems like the only way to have decent power without spending alot of money to get that little 302 is cam n turbo the 5.0 for around 400hp or building a 350 to 375hp 351... I would think even 350 NA HP or 400 HP mild turbo in a sn95 would be pretty respectable street car...maybe where a has a T5 a little deeper gear like a 3.40/3.50 so I can still have a comfortable cruise rpm.

I bought a full lunatic balanced 408 stoker kit for my 351w. I had to cheap out on the pro comp 215 heads. Sent to machine shop for springs and a good look over. Used a Ford single plane high rise. Z 303 cam tried to stay all Ford I was dumb at the time. Any way my buddy ran a 79 sunbird with a 383. We both ran a glide with 4:56 gears. Stock suspension. Tubular k member on my 89 fox lx. 2007. They were all Chevy hardcore never even built a Ford. When they saw I had to do no block grinding for my rods to clear they were amazed. Stud girdle on mains and rockers. Very similar parts on both. They thought for sure my Windsor stood no chance. That Ford made no power crap was all I heard. Double the money later on my Ford even I was questioning my route I chose. We were on small tires. Foot braking no trans brake till later. Straight cut planetary for the glide killed my trans break budget and his. Any way we went to twiggs in Macon and Savannah before it closed and ran 6.10 all day no tuning no test. Once the mustang started to come around the economy fell out. I had to sell my engine for 5,000 to a cop in Atlanta. He said straight bolt up in his 91 he ran 9.80 in the quarter. These were N/A cars. Needless to say I noticed how much power and torque that 408 made which I'm not good on the cubes it was .40 over. It was a very impressive engine. Then I drove a built 347 and man the power band would kill that 383. Anyways just reminiscing the good ole day off 2005-07.

Well stated sir. It's like buying an air filter that promises up to 45 hp gain... lmao Love the videos. keep em coming. Kinda wondering about the results of changing nothing more than LSA on an already somewhat efficient combo. I'm used to the 106 to 104 LSA cams even thou idle quality isn't very good unless compression is real good. In a street car though a vacuum brake booster becomes worthless. (maybe a hydraboost system would fix that idea though?) Just a thought.. Thanks again sir..

I remember back in the olden days [late 1990's ?] in the Summit or JEGS catalogs there was a "BOX" that would eliminate the runner's top section on OHV 5.0 and 5.8 EFI intakes. I twould basically transform your stock 5.0 intake to a GM 1993 LT1 intake length and size wise, T/B remained at stock location. Have you tested it before ? Have you seen in action ? Was it any good ? If you haven't, would you consider testing one ? I always wondered if that thing was a sham or if it actually worked.

Ever tested any fabricated "box" upper intakes? Curious how they stack up. Have a friend running a ported/extrude honed GT40 lower with an aluminum box upper on his 331 stroker. It seems to work well, but the new Holley hi ram for the SBFs have him looking at other options. I think it will give up too much under the curve unless he goes with a big solid roller and larger cylinder heads.

All these mods are great for strip car. For a daily driver to play with on the weekend, RPMs are just too high. you're taking life away from the engine. So for me personally I build to produce great low-end torque and keep the RPMs at about 5000 for maximum horsepower. I have the 97 5.0 from an explorer cam headers and a tune in my 79 Ford pickup fun to play with and been driving it for 8 years.
