There is something special about how we play chords in Jazz. A part of that is the jazz chords themselves but another part that is just as important is how you play those chords. This video is going over 5 basic jazz guitar exercises that you can play and get started developing your Jazz chord skills. Some of them you probably know and some of them you can add to your playing.
I am using parts of songs to demonstrate this, so going through these exercises will also help you get started learning Jazz Standards which is another important part of learning Jazz.
Jazz Chords - A Simple But Amazing Solution You Want To Know:
• Jazz Chords - Everyone...
One of the great things about Jazz Chords is that if you learn even just a few basic jazz chords then you can open them up and add things to them in ways that sound really great.

My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

Whilst I don't want to sound sycophantic, I really appreciate the lessons that you offer to those of us who might not be as financially able to have one to one jazz lessons. I know that a lot of time goes into putting these together, editing, scoring and arranging etc and what with offering the PDFs as well is just, well, gravy for many of us. I've learned a lot from your lessons and continue to. Thanks, Jens.

@@JensLarsen I know this comment is old but you really do help. I've been playing guitar and bass for around 20 years off and on, mostly heavy metal, and anytime I want to write something different, I come to your channel for ideas. It could be a clean passage, a lead harmony, you've given me soooooo many ideas. So much so that I went out and bought a midi keyboard and now I can write in all sorts of different styles. Synthwave? I can do it. Wii sports resort style background music? I can do that too. Thank you soooooo much Jens. Your work is truly a blessing (especially for those of us who get writers block!!! 😂😂😂😂 )

And even if some can afford lessons, some of us with crazy schedules with kids/work/life really get to utilize these at times that traditional lessons might not be offered and for short (or long) chunks.

I'm new to Jens, but my sentiment matches yours precisely. I need more intermediate lessons than these, and I need to brush up on my interval positions, maybe by myself. I learned modes and the circle of 5ths, found some shortcuts for all the major keys ( the same applies to all keys, but I haven't found the rules for those yet . Man that's a beautiful Gibson he's playing, and his playing and presentation is excellent, much better when I use the tv, so everything is bigger. This guy is awesome

Thanks Jens for a very important lesson! Starting out in Jazz can be so overwhelming. My big takeaway from this lesson is that you can begin making good sounding jazz using the techniques you outlined. These aren’t the kind of complicated scales and arpeggios that are needed to sound like an accomplished jazz guitar player, but they are great ways to get started without feeling like you’ll never get there. Thanks again!

I was the guitar player for the band Cameo in the US and I always wanted to play jazz and have always tried to learn and your the first person that has made it so clearly. Hi Jens - thanks for all you share with us. You’re a shining star in a mostly uninspired guitar-video universe! As far as literally playing chords, besides the voicings and timings you show here, something I try to do is gently push and pull the neck forward and backward, which adds an ethereal, phasing sound to the chords. At least it does on my solid body electric, and I think it’s a beautiful effect. Of course this really is most noticeable at slower tempos and ballad type tunes.

You can tell he really wants us to learn the standard notation on guitar as the low (tonally) E string is always covered by the time bar.. Jazz Chords - A Simple But Amazing Solution You Want To Know kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJ6WqbR6ktbLeJs.html One of the great things about Jazz Chords is that if you learn even just a few basic jazz chords then you can open them up and add things to them in ways that sound really great.

I've played Piedmont Blues and in general blues and ragtime guitar for 10 years but I never really learned to lead, or play rhythm on chords up the neck. I've been screwing with it some but I should definitely watch some more of your videos, they're interesting and also, I love the examples, just those are so much fun to listen to!

Dude I just learned my first jazz chords because of you! You will play better metal by learning Jazz. You might also grow up a bit. Funny. When you are young, you are cooler if you play metal. When you get older, the opposite is true. Glad to see you are evolving. Playing jazz is a very smart move.

@@josephocasio6182 Only downside, now you have to buy some collared shirts, get a haircut, cover your tats and start drinking some Starbucks. LOL. IMHO you have likely been playing fast riffs and a handful of tunes all your life that basically all sound the same (a lot of power chords?) That is not really playing guitar. That is memorizing a few patterns and doing it as fast as you can whilst wearing old jeans and black tee shirts. I used to be like that too and I own many black T's! If you cannot play unplugged acoustic on stage for two (2) hours and actually pull it off, you are not a real guitar player. If you want to know what a real guitar player is, that is someone who clearly understands his instrument, harmony and can actually make music, dig on this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftxhlKx53NPIiYU.html The huge difference is that Jack could play fast, dumb powerchords and metal all day long if he chose too- but nearly no metal players could do what he does- on their best day. That is the difference. Good luck as you GROW as a player to maybe one day, becoming a musician and guitar player.
