5 Reasons the Omega Seamaster SUCKS & why I can't buy it. These are the reasons I still don't own the Seamaster Diver 300!!! There are JUST enough reasons for me not to buy it! I want to be a person who likes the Seamaster - I want to like it more than the Rolex Submariner or the Tudor Black Bay… but I just find enough reasons to never buy it. :(
ITS SOOO CLOSE!!! But not quite there.

But I also do wear the 42mm Speedmaster and I’m currently wearing the GMT Master II. Ditto. My 44mm SMP Diver Chrono w the new movement is a masterpiece. I grew up in an Omega family, so I enjoy wearing this watch one day, and my 1953 "bumper" the next day (about a 34mm watch). The bumper looks tiny on my 8 inch wrist, but is jewel-like in its elegance.

The only ones i would consider are older 90s-2000s versions. They are 11mm thick, very elegant and classy. The arrow hand versions are stunning in particular, wave solid case backs, and a lot cheaper.. I'm letting my 2541.80 go, but honestly, for just over 2k you can grab yourself some stunning Seamasters. Modern beefy chunky monkeys are not sculpted in the same gorgeous way, and they're too heavy on the bracelets... come on omega, bring back the elegance please! ❤

@@PaddleTales24 erm... yes okay... I have an average wrist and I love 35mm watches, but also my 42mm g shock. My daily is a 39mm pilot watch... Go try on a 2541.80 and compare it to a modern Seamaster... no matter what your wrist size, the older models were just more thoughtfully designed to be elegant. Nothing to do with how beefy or manly you are Also does it not matter that my 2541 cost me under £2000 to buy? That is much more reasonable than nearly 6k for the modern versions and the older watches are for many reasons the better choice too.. FOR ME.... this is a personal opinion only

What i like about the Seamaster is that it has its own character. Unlike a Tudor BB, this isn't just milking all the current trends. They made some choices, some might love it, some might hate it. But they went for a distinctive look and i appreciate that. We don't know what we want. We might think we do, but we don't.

Granted, the Tudor BB lacks originality compared to the Seamaster, but what I love about it is its size. Perfect width at 39mm and very slim at under 12mm. The Seamaster is a killer watch. If only they would trim it down a bit.

I really loved my Seamaster when I got it, but the CS experience I went through with Omega’s service center in New Jersey this year kind of ruined it for me. I sent it out for warranty service because it was running really slow, but otherwise in great shape. They had it for three months, and sent it back with a ton of scratches all over the case and bezel, and somehow completely misaligned the bezel itself, the ceramic insert, and the dial. It was so bad I questioned whether they sent me back my own watch. They basically told me it was just my eyes, and to pound sand when I sent them before and after pictures and asked them to fix it. It took me two weeks just to get in touch with someone who would listen and look at the pictures. I eventually was able to send it in again and at least get the bezel fixed and get everything lined up right again, but the entire experience left me not feeling so warm and fuzzy about Omega anymore, to the point where I’ve worn it maybe twice since I got it back in August.

SMP300 is iconic due to the fact that no one would mistake its design for another watch yet I totally agree with you Britt. I just cannot get into the esthetics of the 90’s design. If Omega brought back the 2254.50 style design with 8800 movement, tapered bracelet, I’d be tempted.

My Seamaster 300 is from 2010, 41mm version and you hit the nail on the head regarding the bracelet but for a different reason. I realize micro adjustments weren't necessarily the thing back 13 years ago but with the Seamaster bracelet, the bracelet on my wrist was either a little too tight or a little too loose. So in the winter I was taking out one of the half links trying not to lose the tiny collars that lock the pins in and in the summer, adding the same link back in. I've already bent the pins a couple of times. It's really a pain in the butt. I actually just sold my Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba 43mm, for the same reason. Hamiltons bracelet only comes with full size links and 1 micro adjustment position which is only 1/16 inch apart. What good is that? Watch brands, multiple micro adjustments on deployment clasps please!!

At this point I low key feel the need to defend the SMP 300 😅. First of all I can understand the criticism around this piece. Not long ago I felt the same. But then I tried it on at my local Omega Boutique. And boy was I surprised. I never thought that this watch could fit so well on my actually quite small wrist. The reason for that (of all the reasons possible) lies in the bracelet. Although it might not taper and look a bit clumsy it wears brilliant (for me). The endlinks go straight down, hugging your wrist, rather than sticking out. That makes it far more wearable compared to the previous versions. It also manages to hide it's thickness quite well. Regarding the helium escape valve, I don't mind it. In my opinion it's a design feature that belongs to this watch. Dare I say, just like the cyclops on a Rolex? Many people say that Omega becomes more and more obsolete, especially compared to Tudor. Can't really go with that statement. I also own a BB58. If you compare the two bracelets alone you'll see the difference. The Omega just feels more high-quality and even more like a true luxury watch. The build quality of the Tudor is of course totally fine, however I feel like the Omega is just a tiny bit better.

Hi Britt, fantastic video, as usual. In the past, I had the same dilemma with the Seamaster, with the skeletonised hands', helium escape valve, archaic bracelet, especially the red letterings on the dial. However, once the green dial was issued, I totally bought it with the bracelet but later changed it to the green strap. Have you seen the green dial version? Would like to hear your comments too. I agree with Britt's points. I have owned two of the current generation Seamaster Diver 300Ms and always teeter on the edge of flipping it. To me the biggest issue is the terrible, terrible bezel that I find to be essentially useless as I can't grip it properly. This was true in both of my Seamasters and a huge contrast to the excellent grip on the bezel of my 8500 series Planet Ocean. It's still a cool watch and the reason I sold off a Pelagos instead of the Seamaster is that it has a much dressier look than pretty much any diver on the market. Yeah, it can't be considered a proper tool watch but as a nice, smart dressy diver that borders on the jewelry side of the equation, it certainly has a unique and compelling design. Nothing else looks like it.

Good video. A few counter-thoughts 1. The size is not THAT big. Feels great on the wrist. I think they nailed the sizing here. 2. Every watch will have things about it that you would change. The question is - is it a dealbreaker. The Helium escape valve is like the rivets on Tudors, you don’t love it, but it is not a dealbreaker. 3. Yeah the bracelet SUCKS - I switched mine for the blue rubber strap - love that one for my casual look (jeans) 4. I never noticed the hands. Not a deal breaker!!!

I own the NTTD seamaster 300m, because of the warm chocolate colour, but also because it wears smaller, and has a better strap. I also prefer no date, I actually wrote to Omega, with similar comments to yours, many of the issues were addressed in NTTD, apart from helium escape valve. They gave a lovely response, but alas offered no hope( what an exclusive that would have been) ps…the skeltonised hands on NTTD are very hard to read in some lights, but the lume is gorgeous, so swings and roundabouts. Shame about the silly military markings too. Great vid, love my watch, and sometimes imperfections kinda grow on you.

Just recently bought a 2551.80, Brosnan era mid-size. I’m absolutely taken by it, very elegant and great wearing watch. I think the lug to lug on the 42 is a bit too large for most wrists and it accentuates the stuff people aren’t a fan of like the escape valve and non tapering bracelet. Britt, you should try a mid-size if you haven’t and see if it changes your view. Cheers!

I think the SMP biggest fault is its bracelet, but there are 3 alternatives (all Omega geniune) that Britney fails to consider every time she reviews this watch: 1- Rubber strap with 2 options (tang buckle or deployment clasp), you can also consider 3rd party straps for pop-up of color. 2- Nato Strap 3- Omega stainless steel milanese / mesh strap As for the skelton hands, I believe they give the watch a different look, and I don't think they affect time eligibility, they are certainly better than Tudor's snow falke hands which are in you face. The same goes for HE. It is Omega's DNA for the SMP, and as Britney said, once you wear the watch, you stop noticing it.

I'm with you on the modern Seamaster Professional! I really don't like the size and chunkiness. I also don't like the flashiness of the ceramic models. The best executed modern SMPs are the NTTD and the 60th Anniversary of 007 Edition. They are not flashy watches, but they are still big for me. This is why I chose the midsize Brosnan SMP. It's the perfect size for my 6.25 inch wrist and the aluminium dial/bezel keeps it elegant and low-key. With regards on the skeleton hands, HE Valve and bracelet, I actually like them! I used to think I would hate them until I have it in person. The skeleton hands work with the design of the SMP. The HE Valve is charming thanks to the Bond connection. The bracelet is one of the most comfortable watches I have ever worn!! Granted, the midsize version is 18mm so it's small. Also, the links hug my wrists. The SMP is one of those watches that you either love it or hate it. I feel bad for those who don't like it because it's so well made!

Can't agree more, to me, the Seamaster 300 "fixed" a lot of these issues but introduced others. I ended up with the bronze/gold version with it's own "fixes" (ceramic bezel, no lollipop second hand and the bezel has no play in this version). It is a great watch all the way around but still wanted a "fun" summer diver and went with the Breitling Superocean (blue bezel and all white face on a blue rubber strap). This was my perfect pairing covering everything I wanted out of dive watches.

Back in the day I bought two 2250 450’s because I really did not like the skeleton hands. I sold the black dial one, I wish I hadn’t but still have the electric blue dial watch. A couple of years ago I bought the white dialled 300M because I thought the skeleton hands contrasted better for easier reading. My dislikes are the difficult to use bezel, the lume , pathetic, and the thickness. As I don’t need to use the bezel and lume it is not an issue. As a big guy I can carry off the size and when I am wearing it it is not an issue. It was my daily for ages but now I rotate my watches. As an aside the price has gone up £1100 since I bought it. I agree with all of your points! It’s too big, the He valve looks like a mini Reece’s cup, the skeleton hands are aesthetically appalling and the bracelet is shocking with 90’s vibes and the lack of a taper adds to the awkwardness! I’m also not a fan of the bezel! There is an alternative though, the Seamaster Professional 600 Planet Ocean! It corrects almost all of these “faults” and although it is more expensive, it’s residuals on the second hand market make it a canny buy for an almost new watch at less the RRP of the 300!

OMG Britt… you’ve nailed it. I have been sooo close to pulling the trigger on a Seaweed with a rubber strap… but I just can’t do it. My reasons are… 1. The skeletonized hands are child-like and clumsy with very poor lume… please bring back the sword hands. 2. The bracelet (although well made)… is so old-fashioned, but not in a good way. Why don’t Omega use the PO bracelet… that is absolutely superb! 3. The Helium escape valve is a bit redundant… keep it neat like the Ploplof/Ultra Deep… SeaDweller/Deep Sea. 4. Lose the date function… it looks much cleaner. 5. The watches in the flesh don’t look like the Omega website renderings/images. This is a massive fail imo. The Seaweed variant looks vibrant on their website… but virtually black in person. So until they remedy the above… I’m out. A terrific watch, but not for me. Please don’t hate on me. Keep smiling. 👍🇬🇧

I have owned my Seamaster for around 4 months - I love the thing, the bracelet isn't an issue for "me" as it was the first thing I changed (hairy wrists) and the HE valve is something I don't even notice. The only real issue I have with it is the bezel action, it is just awful, I feel it needs a good few rotations or a "warm up" before it works relatively smoothly.

Just a few thoughts. I agree with some of you points and disagree with others. The smaller size option isn't going to be something we'll likely see. Most women today wear men's size watches and shrinking down the proportions of the dial, case and HEV will throw off the design IMO. I think the bracelet needs to go but not switching to the speedy version. Many have complained not just about the lack of micro adjustment but the feel of the old speedy bracelet. I really like the sword hands but in this case they don't match the new style dial IMO.

Totally agree with you but also to add its too blingy too glossy , I owned the first SMP 300 with the co-axial but sold it a few years later and regretted it , so 2 yrs ago I went to buy this one, at the same time I kept seeing the Tudor pop on my Facebook ads and fell in love with the vintage look and guess what I bought the Tudor due to your points , yes I owned one before but that was £1850 back then and the bezel wasn't ceramic gloss and the helium valve was smaller. I would be all over the 2254 and again nearly bought this watch when looking at my first expensive watch back then but my talked me into buying a brand new watch Omega smp 212.30.41, also miss the hippocampus case backs yes the movements look good but miss the casebacks

As a diver, who wore a aluminum bezel one for five years diving in Thailand, I never used the bloody helium valve, didn't really know what it was for then😂. Also the bezel aint easy to turn when wet, and it is a bit......shiny, even then. This sounds like an argument to buy vintage.

I think they should make the HEV a tad smaller. Make the watch as thin as the speedy and make a similar style bracelet to the current model but that tapers (maybe even a quick release). It wouldn't hurt to have some more distinct to Omega* dial colors either😅.

The Planet Ocean 37.5 fixes a lot of these issues. Smaller case, less 90s-ish bracelet, non-tapered HEV, and more legible hand set.👍🏽 It’s slightly upscale, tho, so you’re gonna shell out more 💵.

Agree on all points. That's why I only own and like one Seamaster, which is the 2254.50. Additionally I prefer the ETA movement every watchmaker worth their salt can service and repair. It's chronometer rated and I don't really care if the METAS certified movement runs 2s more accurate per day. After a year or so of runtime, there won't be any difference to speak of.

Who’s paying full price for the SMP 300? I purchased a white faced version from a UK AD for £4K, does this then change your opinion as you continue to make references to the list price which we all know can be negotiated down. I also got an additional deployment rubber strap in the deal making the purchase phenomenal. At £4K as a genuine new purchase watch from an AD does it make it any more desirable??

I actually handed my SMP300 white dial, bracelet) to some friends and family members and no one even noticed the HE Valve, the skeleton hands etc. also nobody says it looks 90s because of the bracelet. Only „watch people“ have these problems lol. The first thing the people notice when they hold it or wear it is that it is heavy, shiny and big. They also say that it looks and feels expensive. IMO you can‘t judge the SMP300 „part by part“ because the overall look and concept is just amazing. It is my only expensive watch and i still love it after 3 years.

A diver have a bezel n normally is about 3-4mm... So if a watch is 37 mm n let say the bezel is 3mm that make 6mm... So the dial face is only 31mm... N that really weirdly proportion n clamp.. its not about how big the watch, is about the proportion. In my opinion a dial face need to be about 34-35(dial) + 6-8(bezel), that make diver to be minimally 40mm..

I've had three and have sold them on. I have trouble making out the minute hand at night. One reason the main bit of lume on the hand goes over the 5 minute lume indice and therefor the hand is loose. Also, when hands are wet or cold I have trouble turning the bezel. For the price I shouldn't have these problems. I prefer the 2054 hands any day.

As someone who recently purchased the white dial black bezel Seamaster a few months ago, I honestly really enjoy wearing it on my wrist. But overall, these are some fair criticisms about the watch when it comes to looks, wearability, etc. I will say that the watch really elevated once I got a black rubber strap instead of the steel bracelet (which was very heavy and can be hard to wear for long periods of time). Not only does it look better with the rubber strap, it is significantly more comfortable and haven't regret this purchase yet. Always cool seeing someone highlighting this watch!

No wonder the SMP300 showed up on Timothy Dalton's James Bond. A laquered lounge lizard, not somebody the Mi6 would pick from special services as the one-man-solution to all the world's secret problems. The SMP300 seems to be designed for him, it blends in organically but like the man, the watch is no survivor. I totally get you Britt, i wouldn't buy the SMP300 either. I do like however, how @AdrianBarker wears his white dial on a Nato, but still.

Just waiting to pick it back up from its holidays/servicing. We’ve been apart about 5 months now. And the 5 link bracelet is perfect. It distinguishes the watch from all the others.

When I first got my 2531.80, I didn’t think I would ever like the skeleton hands. After living with it for a while, I did fall in love with them. There is no position where both hands cannot be seen. No, they don’t have enough lume to last all night. But, they do last as long as any night dive I have ever been on. Yes, I have dived with my SMP. There was a week in Grand Cayman, where it went to 120 feet every day. The SMP is an awesome diver’s tool watch. i have not had an opportunity to go down in a diving bell, where the helium escape valve would be used. I really wanted to do that when I was younger, but will likely never have the opportunity to do it. I also bought mine, new from an AD for just over $1,700 US. That’s a far cry from the $7,000 for the new version.

I'm with you on the hands, but we disagree with respect to the bracelet. I especially like how Omega does the two-tone OMP watch and bracelet. It's the right amount of gold that isn't in your face, it's subtle. If they made the entire middle link gold like Rolex does, then I would agree with you, but instead they only added gold to the slimmer links and only on the flanks of those links. Very classy in my opinion.

Agree with your five points - and would add - scalloped bezel is hard to turn under many conditions, and can't be turned far enough - and wave motif on newer version not as compelling. I traded my SMP 300 for a PO 39.5 - deals with all of my issues.

Ah, can't judge a book by its cover though. I agree the bracelet is too much silver color combined with the watch. But other than that, every detail is pretty cool for modern watch in black and matching a black nylon /leather strap is perfect, great contast showing off the black. I am have small trist 6" and it feel comfortably well and solid. I am not a big fan of Omega prior, is conversative for my taste, but i think I am liking each day, there's many fine details in it.

I agree with all of your complaints about the SMP 300. But I love it. I have the blue one like the one on your videos. I was considering the blue Planet Ocean 39mm which would have addressed most of the problems but chose the SMP 300 because the blue wave dial was so much more vivid. I love the skeleton hands in the day but hate it in the dark when the lume is insufficient. Unfortunately the Helium escape valve and the bracelet have become such icons that they are not likely to change it. Yes to a 39 mm SMP 300.

I had the previous gen and really liked it a lot. Much more than the current gen. I eventually sold that and my BB58 and never looked back. Wish the new gen SMP was thinner, a few mm smaller and had a better bracelet. Because ultimately its bracelet is the biggest drawback for me. The lack of taper, no quick adjust, and odd ( to my eyes) styling didn’t do it for me. Had a good 2-3 years with it and then let it go.

I'm so with you on that one. I absolutly love the dial on the watch, however the bracelet and the escape valve not at all. Why not making a valve like the Rolex Sea dweller? This one sticks out at 10 o'clock like if it was a defect and the bracelet too japenese looking for me. I own 10 watches of prestige but zero Omegas, I could never find anything satisfying with that brand (and I'm Swiss), not even the Speedmaster Pro that I find boring. The only one I could consider is the Aquaterra with the blue or green dial.

Great video! I own that blue Seamaster. I like how it looks but it does wear big. The helium escape valve is just the seamaster signature look I think. Looking at the 2254.50 makes me sick to my stomach - like when my mom would force feed me cod liver oil. Everything you detest about the new Seamaster are the EXACT reasons I love it, LOL.
