A very wonderful person gave me this 1974 BMW R90 Motorcycle. It hasn't run in a couple years but I kick start it! Hopefully I didn't break anything... weird that the kickstart gets hung up. Stay tuned as I fix it up and get it back on the road! Brake master cylinder disassembly and gas tank flush.

Great buy...by all means, keep it. I still have an R90S that I've had since the 1980s, and it gets ridden every week. Original dampers for that bike were Boges, the Konis were upgrades. DEFINITELY clean the carbs; those things will never run properly unless you do. Look on the bright side: if you blow the engine, the tank (after cleaning and creaming) is worth about $300!

You'll get it, time and patience. I was fortunate to be handed down my grandfathers 83 r65, it sat for years. I spent probably 3 months so far this year, doing what you have, piece by piece, finding new, but little problems every step. Tear those carbs apart and have a look at least. They aren't hard to rebuild. I threw in the towel and bought all new orings and gaskets for mine. It fired on the first try and after adjusting and syncing it starts very easily. This is my first bike, and it has been very educational finding and repairing everything. Great looking bike, enjoy it.

It's straight, complete and not rusted out. That's all that really matters when acquiring a classic anything....especially a $5 classic. You could sink a lot of money in parts in this bike and still be easily ahead. (the action on that kickstart definitely indicates a problem)

Just started watching your channel. With those braided fuel lines you don’t need clamps. Next time you remove the pet cocks throw those screens in the trash. They get clogged and cause problems. You added in line fuel filters that is enough. Also consider altering the negative battery lead. Where it attaches to the engine case cut the eye into a U. That way you just loosen the bolt and pull the negative cable off. It saves time and works well. If you’ve already gotten those comments sorry to repeat. I’ll keep watching and leave comments along the way. BTW, a 30’ road flare fits nicely in the frame tube under the gas tank. Always good to be prepared. Good luck.

Regarding your oily sump - my 1969 R69S crankcase was always slightly oily from oil seeping straight through the porous aluminum. In your case, from the video, it looks to me like this 1974 has the same, cough, 'quality'. If I'm right, it's not a oil leak that you can fix but rather oil seeping which is "normal" for this era. There might be oil leaks too but the even, horizontal coating of oil all over the sump at oil level looks odd for an oil leak. Back in 1938, driver Rudolf Caracciola in the Mercedes-Benz W 125 twelve-cylinder established a world speed record on a public road reaching 432.7 km/h on the autobahn near Frankfurt. Many decades later that car still exists and the metallurgy was tested and found to be on-par with inexpensive, modern garden furniture. It took German industry a LONG time to recover from WWII.

Starting a BMW by kickstart: Both feet left and right on the footrest. While standing on your footrests you put your left heel on the kickstarter. Press the kickstarter down until you feel comprssion, relase the kickstarter and then kick it. Why this way: If the engine backfires, the kickstarter will shoot out from under your heel. The way you do it here, you can't apply force and you run the risk, in case of a kickback, that the kickstarter will hit you right under the middle of your foot.

Thats funny. In the 1980 i had a metallic brown R 90/6 with 2 front discs and also a (golf-)yellow 2002. Greets from Munich/Germany. The handle bars of yours are from a R 100/RS (wich i had after the 90/6), the OEM rear shocks are Boge with aluminum sleeves on the top. I think, the plastic nuts from the tank are to find on the fuse box of the 2002.

Those are the new petcock screens that are better than the original. The red washer is not used because the metal waser is aluminum and it will seal with out the gasket. They also fit better without the red washer. Fuel line looks recent. The size is 7 mm. 1/4" is too tight and 1/3" too loose. The proper fuel line is available many places including Volks Wagon shops. I don't run fuel filters. The screens do a good enough job. But many do believe in the filters.

A lot of owners mistake BMW's very poor choice of velocity ratio for low efficiency. A few owners (not me) have had the master cylinder re-sleeved down to 14 mm, and report much easier braking.

From your other video, the transmission ina /6 is a 5 speed. The 1974 year had a ruff time of it being the first year of the 5 speed and when that one went bad they put a /5 transmission in it. The 4 speed/5 trannie also seems to need work. The lever is supposed to pop back up. If you have the original '74 5 speed it may be rebuildable but many time they are not. Unique parts not shared by any other 5 speed is the enemy. Any 5 speed from 1974 thru 1980 will fit. '81 and above 5 speeds do not fit. They have a shorter input shaft and the work arounds are not worth the time and money.. Also from your second video you have noticed the lack of performance of the front brake. Too bad you didn't do a little more research because this is a common complaint and the best fix is to reduce the size of the MC when rebuilt.. The bike is rideable with the original brakes, I rode mine 20 years that way, but it will be something you want to address after you fix the transmission issues. You need a manual. Clymer's is good. Also the one from England. They eacbh cover a little bit of different area so they go together well. The BMW shop manual is expensive and not recommended. There are several online Forums and email lists. I recommend -- advrider.com/f/forums/airheads.85/ It is probably the most popular.

As a former tech and owner since 1974... your will find the following: If you ride a lot the valves will have to be replaced as they were designed to run with LEADED 95 octane gas. You might have to disassemble the transmission as there are known issues. Yep, the kick starter is only for extreme emergencies. You would be better off to push start it. The ignition is weak... so keep the points burnished & the points cam lobe lubed every 5,000 miles. The charging system is also weak. One crank for a good running engine.... well it takes about 15 minutes above 1800 rpm to put back what was used in that SINGLE cranking. There is an aftermarket diode board... that helps some and is more reliable. After 50+ years of drinking the BMW cool-aide... I prefer reliability and not have to always work on the bike...so I switched to Honda & Suzuki. Don't get me wrong.... I still love that R90/6 and my 1977 R100RS cafe. I am worn out from having to always fix or tweak something.

I wouldnt use that Kickstarter. The ks gear has a soft metal gear in the train which ends up in time, loading the transm with metal dust that gets everywhere. Not healthy for the transm. For anybody that has tried using the ks on these bikes, you having just taken the first step in disabusing the notion of German engineering. Charles
