Sean. I watched your channel several years ago when I was getting first motorcycles. Unfortunately I got busy with my life and grew away from both your channel and riding my bike often. This year has been a nightmare for my family. Within 6 months both our baby boy and our 2 year old puppy passed away unexpectedly. I have been so lost the last 4 months and haven’t been able to figure out my life. Last week I also lost an old friend that I haven’t seen for 6 years and while I was sitting in mass for his funeral, I felt safe and felt the feeling of belonging to something. Your channel popped into my mind several days ago and I have been watching you everyday since. The way you shine your light on others has brought me joy and gets my mind out of these dark places. Thank you for your therapy. I have begun riding my bike again, for the first time in 5 months. Now I am trying to save up for a project bike to work on to keep my mind busy. God bless you and your family Sean!

I remember seeing those R-90s all over when I was a kid. Police in my country used them for more than 20 yrs. They where maintanied perfectly. Most cops who drove them for years, bought them from force when they got new BMWs. You can still randomly see them on the road. Great, old school bikes if they are maintained properly.

They're pretty common still here in Kokomo, IN, I have one (a '73 R75/5 long-wheelbase) and I see a few other people riding them every year. We had a very popular BMW dealer here in town that sold a lot of new and used airheads over a lot of years before switching to mostly used Harley stuff.

The easiest way to test a charging system on any vehicle with an alternator, which the R90 has, is to start it up and then disconnect the battery. If the bike dies, it's the charging system. If it doesn't, it's the battery.
@gregorytimmons4777
@gregorytimmons4777 4 жыл бұрын
However I have read warnings about NOT disconnecting the battery on a running bike. Not sure what the issue is but I will be checking.
@maxw576
@maxw576 4 жыл бұрын
Many bikes have a shunt regulator that drains excess current from the alternator internally. Disconnecting the battery causes 100% of the alternator current to be drained within the regulator. This can overheat and burn out the regulator. Probably not an issue for a quick test when the bike is idling, but I wouldn't rev up the engine for a long time while disconnected. Newer regulator designs stop the alternator from creating current instead of draining excess current eliminating the overheat issue.

I know you can take the battery out and push start the vehicle / crank it by hand ( I used to do it on a 70-ish renault 12 that had a place to put a crank under the front bumper ) it might work on a small old bike as well. So if the battery was dead on his bike he could have run that bike to hell and back if he didn't shut the engine so... his alternator is dead (or it might just need new brushes)

I tour on my 1985 BMW R80RT which I bought new. 157k miles so far. Good regular maintenence & keeping to the oil change specs is key. As is riding a bike per its design. After 40 or so years, the electrics on any bike should be replaced or updated... wiring harness included. Insulation degrades no matter what.... unless it's just an unridden museum piece. Looking forward to another 40 years.... or leaving it in my will. My daily commuter (in season) is my '82 Yamaha XS650 Special. Pretty bulletproof bike. Parts are available & fairly cheap. Nothing wrong with "vintage". My dad told me that a machine doesn't know how old it is, but it does know how well it's been taken care of.

Hello! This rings true to my 1981 R65. My bike drained the battery and the power stayed on even when I turned the bike off with the key. The kill switch however fell off several years ago so I was just running it without. They don't sell the "kill switches" ala cart so it looks like I would have to buy the entire throttle assembly. I don't want my first bike to have anything else but the original hardware. Any suggestions and thanks for reading!

The next time you do the fill the gas tank for a stranger, I'm going to follow you in my RV. At 80 Gallons, that would be a pretty good deal. I do wish I could have caught you guys when you were having alternator trouble. There was a simple solution - swap batteries between bikes. This would charge the other battery while you put some miles down. Once the battery got low again, swap them back. Just keep going back and forth until you get home. Trouble averted. Now that girl is never going to talk to you again.

Helping random people out with gas money reminded me of a time in the 1970,s riding through the Australian outback. I was on a kawasaki triple and Had broken down in the middle of nowhere about 100 miles away from Tennant creek. After waiting for 2 days Some truckers stopped and took me and my bike to Tennant creek, when they dropped me off at a motorcycle shop they gave me $100 cash which was quite a bit of money back then. It really helped me out, something I have never forgotten.

This video brought back a lot of fond memories of two BMW motorcycles I once owned. My 1970 R60/5 developed the same alternator trouble on a tour in 1975 as your R90/6. A helpful BMW dealer in Buffalo NY replaced it and it never gave me anymore trouble. That was the only trouble that old BMW ever caused me. Much later in 1989, I bought a 1974 R90/6 with a Butler/Avon full sport-touring fairing and Craven fiberglass panniers. That motorcycle was perfectly trouble-free. I bought both of these from Stan's BMW in Doylestown PA.

So my brother and I have gotten inspiration from this video. We live in middle Georgia and we have decide to try to find some cheap bikes like you guys did. We want to find some and buy some off-road tires and take them up and ride the Appalachian trail. We do crazy stuff sometimes. We went to key west one year in a weekend and we recently rode to escoda Michigan and back in two days. It’s always been about the journey so we want this one to be awesome too. Also, to add I really like the fact that you do words of inspiration in your videos.

I enjoy your road trips. My wife is ill so I can't go far from home anymore. Trading a broke bike for one that runs is brilliant.

My wife and I crossed country on bikes. Mine, a 1992 Triumph advenurer, and my wife on a 1972 R75/5. Her bike did better than mine over the 4000 mile trip.
