Been running a K&N air filter in the OEM filter box for 15 yrs on my '97 F250 Aug. 11 and newer, and the inside of the turbo looks new with no mods @ 276k with original injectors and glow plugs and I still get 20 to 23 mpg highway. Every oil change the oil gets sucked out of the HIPOP and replaced with synthetic every 3 to 5k miles.
@izzy351

A couple things... 1) The boost regulator is to keep the PCM from seeing more than 22-23psi. If it sees that, it'll set the CEL for overboost. I ran a non-wastegated turbo in my 7.3 for years and pegged my 35psi gauge. 2) CCV is NOT bad for the engine at all. The T444E International version of the 7.3 has it vented to the atmosphere, and as long as you don't plumb it into your exhaust, it's fine. 3) I've personally seen dusted intakes on 7.3s equipped with a K&N. Just don't do it. I have since sold my 7.3 (sad day it was), and I now run a 3.5L EcoBoost F150. I have an S&B intake on it -- my latest oil analysis show good filtering. Which leads to... 4) Pull oil samples periodically to see how you engine is doing. Mine always showed perfectly clean air (low silicon) going into the engine, along with other things like wear metals, coolant in the oil, etc. Cheap but excellent insight into what your engine is doing.

Best low cost upgrade is a 6.0 Intercooler. I got my intercooler free from a friend that put a larger intercooler on his 6.0 and purchased the connection boots/hoses for about $60.00. I've been running a K&N drop in filter on my 01 for 450,000 miles and never had a issue. You have to make sure you install the stock housing correctly. I've seen where people don't get it on properly and that has causes a lot of issues.
@scottydavis1813
@scottydavis1813 4 жыл бұрын
Mobey Dick the 6.0 cooler is a must because the stock one looks like a power steering pump cooler compared to it. As far as air filter I use the Donaldson Blue 6637 from Riffraff. The rest of the stuff he talks about is junk save the cross over mod

Run the ccv mod to a catch can and then back up to the intake to keep the scavenging vacuum working, it keeps the oil out of your intercooler tubes and still vents the crankcase properly.

You do know the t444e which is practically the same motor has the ccv ran and dumped behind the block right? The only reason ford routed the ccv back to the turbo was because of emissions at the time?

I can't see the use of the zoodad mod w/o the air snorkel to your air filter. If you had a stock filter or ford AIS (which I recommend), then it would make sense to me for the zoodad mod. I know you have the pipe there to kind of direct air, but since you're not directing it to an enclosed area where your filter is how does it help? Once that "cooler air" gets in it heats up with the ambient engine temp before it hits your air filter. What am I missing? Just curious. A side note, to help clean up your CCV mod, unbolt the 4 bolts to the "dog house" and rotate it 90 degrees. That way you can route the pipe against the firewall and it becomes out of sight.

@carolinawestern3875 4 жыл бұрын
Just a few questions. Oil crossover = are those 2 ports already there or do you have to tap them? Boost fooler= does extra boost come from both delayed wastegate venting, allowing longer turbo sustain, and % of throttle input or by some means of influence on the turbo itself?

The boost fooler doesn't have anything to do with the waste gate. What it does is "fool" the computer .... If the computer reads a boost above 25psi, it "de-fules" the injectors to keep from making excess power (engine damage)..... You can run a paint / airbrush air pressure regulator in line that you first set at 24 psi or so & your good.....
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 7 жыл бұрын
+Jay Dee you are correct, although I do believe it defueling at 22psi. I should had described this whole video a lot better. BB Donkey the problem with k&n is the material it’s made of is woven like cloth. Most all owners do not clean them properly and the space between the strands widens, if you hold it up to the light you can see the size of the gaps and the entire sun if that is your light source. It’s almost impossible to keep it from happening, but if you do by chance, it does filter better the dirtier it gets. Not a risk I am taking. It will dust your cylinders(mainly cylinder walls on this engine) in short time! Have seen as little as 12k miles in extreme conditions.

All cheap mods to do but I donno.... the only ones that make any real sense to me are the intake mods, and me personally I'd just throw in a S&B cold air intake and call it done. After that do a 4" downpipe and exhaust as money allows, and a set of 180cc single shot injectors and have a 7.3 making around 344 RWHP and 727 RW lb-ft. But hey that's just my 2 cents :)

Hey man, I've just started a channel about my 7.3. It was stock, added the 6637 filter and am planning to build it up slightly. I'll be throwing on a straight pipe, chip, and gauges. It's got the ZF6 manual, which exhaust and chip would you recommend? Stuck between the mbrp and diamond eye both 4". Potential chip either TS6 or hydra. Anyone's input would be appreciated, check out my channel and let me know where I can improve as well! Thanks. Let me know if the shoutout isn't fine, I'll wait and leave upgrades questions.

what all is needed for the boost fooler?
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 8 жыл бұрын
simply just the fooler, your stock system has a solid hose that runs from the map sensor to the turbo base. a fooler is a 22psi regulator that tells the map sensor its only receiving 22psi. I've had several comments on this one a should have explained it better. a stock truck and turbo usually put out around 17psi or so when you start adding mods its easy to increase this so and psi over 22 will throw a over boost code the fooler helps this and keeps the waste gate closed longer. here to help

I have used K&N filters for over 30 years on a variety of applications. I have had no issues connected to poor air filtration. Provide us with some proof or test results. Anything good can change for the worse.

the reason I for not using a know filter is diesels need very clean air. and kn filters allow too much soot to enter which can damage the injectors. those filters are fine for gas engines though.

If you hold a k&n up the light you can really see the gaps that dirt can pass through. In my opinion don't use k&n on any diesel, a better alternative would be the S&B or the AFE stage 2

+Devon Xpress I have held both of mine with a light behind it, before I clean it and after to be sure they are not damaged. I don't see the problem you speak of. Mind you, I use stock replacements, not open type. The open type with the prefilters get dirty really quick. Of all the years and number of K&N filters I've had, never an issue as you describe unless you damage it physically. Mine never get so dirty to even move the restriction indicator. But know this, whenever I can get either brand you recommend in my hands, apples to apples, I am going to compare them.
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 8 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of mix reviews on k&n, the reason i stopped with k&n a few years back i had a 97 7.3 that needed a turbo rebuild before i started doing them myself and the shop had told me that there was excessive wear in the turbo and dirt in the intercooler, so from there i did research and the mixed reviews lead me to just not taking any chances, but since you've had good luck with them i'd stick with it . I personal can't recommend it due to my experience, but i may revisit this in a video on comparing the top brands may make for a good discussion. Thanks for the comments my intended goal for this channel is to create a video style forum and that can't be done if everyone agrees with each other so stick to your guns and drop a comment on the other videos if you agree or not. Thanks again

There is no such thing as letting in "too much air" on a diesel. You want as much air as possible going into the engine. K&N is bad because their filters do not filter out everything. That's why S&B is getting more and more reputation.

Kinda confused on wym by don’t get a k&n considering it’s proven to be the best intake for the 7.3. And by you saying get a cheap intake is you basically telling probably to get an intake that actually will let the little particles into your engine unlike the k&n which allows best airflow and doesn’t allow all the little particles wile giving you the best air flow

They rely on the oil to collect debris. And very fine particles of dirt can get past and sand the compressor wheel. I work at a diesel specific repair shop. I have seen it on countless diesel trucks. Regardless of manufacturer

The ccv delete is not good for your motor. It allows excessive crankcase pressure. Im sure your thinking yea whatever. Its true though. With it in the factory location the turbo creates a vacuum which pulls the crankcase pressure back into the engine. Venting to the atmosphere is not sufficient. If oil consumption is your issue. Which it shouldnt be unless you have excessive blowby in which case your engine is done anyways, install an oil catch can.
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 7 жыл бұрын
+Colin Leiby I've thought about the catch can, I don't have a lot of blow by but I hate oil in the turbo and the bigger turbos come with the ccv missing from the boots
@C4soulja
@C4soulja 7 жыл бұрын
Im not speaking of blowby yet. Blow by is compression leaking past your rings. Crankcase pressure is the pressure creaked from the spinning of the crankshaft and other moving parts. With excessive crankcase pressure eventually over time you peobably will have blow by issues. This is not an opinion in is fact. Hooking up a magna helix guage will prove it. The older largwr turbos also dont have intercoolers.
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 7 жыл бұрын
+Colin Leiby have had a couple other people tell the same thing, not saying it's wrong just don't like the ccv going into the turbo, I've seen other trucks come stock with venting it to the ground so figured it can hurt. Will be looking into this more to see what other options I could do
@C4soulja
@C4soulja 7 жыл бұрын
I dont see what the problem is. If your, excuse the term,slightly anal retentive i could see oil in the turbo bothering you, but in all actuality its hurting absolutely nothing. The engine oil is not going to burn your impeller unless your iat was ridiculously high and your engine will burn it. Diesels will damn near run off anything. Its being burned in the cylinders with no problem at all. The only oils ive seen damage impellers is people who have over saturated their k&n air filters. The oil is not designed the same so it can burn your turbo out but thats the only time i could see that happening. Im an ASE certified tech and ive worked on Ford diesels the majority of my life. Im not saying i know it all but i can confidently say i know a bit. Like i said if seeing your turbo dirty bothers you look into an oil catch can. Venting your ccv to atmosphere is bad for your truck..... and the environment:)

is there any benefit to a boost fooler on an OBS powerstroke?
@yzmatt31
@yzmatt31 7 жыл бұрын
It does nothing unless you're demanding more air then the pcm is allowing. Stock does nothing. Turbo master actually does something. The pcm will tell the valve to start to open as little as 5 psi. The Turbo master helps hold it shut until you hit the correct 22 psi.
@DevonXpress
@DevonXpress 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, boost fooler helps with when pushing more than 22psi. my truck is modded and pushes 40psi. the boost fooler is very important in my set up. Achieving more than 22psi is pretty easy with little mods.
@yzmatt31
@yzmatt31 7 жыл бұрын
You have to have tunes to push past stock psi. The Pcm cuts fuel at the at 22 psi. The boost fooler only fools the pcm, that's it............. No crappy tunes not reason. Period. Good custom tunes will adjust for the pcm reading and disable it in a sense and no need for a boost fooler.

Boost fooler, lol. Unless you have modded your truck you will gain nothing. And if you do and you get a SES light then get good tunes and all that goes away. K&n had three different filters and guys were stinking the wrong ones in and not getting a good seal. They weren't letting too much air in. User error not filter error. Also your 6637 shouldn't be crushed. Third oil in turbo does nothing to hurt it. The doodad mod does nothing with the cold air intake filter setups. Thats for stock airbox setup. Nice try though.

If you are pushing 40 psi you REALLY need to get some custom tunes. They will take care of the ses and pcm setting. You should know this if you are doing videos about this. Can you register in another state? I grew up near the Oregon Border, and hardly anybody ran a Calif. plate. Town was to small to have a Police Station though. They did come through on occasion however. I live in Western Washington now, and we don't have smog here, but we have a Navy base. I say that because military men do not have to change their plates. So if you have a base nearby, register in a state with no smog, and put a big "U.S. Navy" sticker on, keep hair short, and then don't break any of the small laws. My 7.3 turned 20 this year. Yours can't be too far behind. Is 20 years still exempt in Calif? I am sorry this country has become so much like N.Korea. Good Luck

Don’t do these things to your obs or super duty, waste of money. The oil crossover is good if you have big injectors and stock Hpop. Boost fooler does nothing unless you are going over 25lbs. The waste gate doesn’t just pop open when your boost goes high. The computer defuels the injectors over 24psi, that’s why you fool the map sensor . When you shift gears or let off the throttle you waste gate opens to blow off the boosted air that the motor can’t utilize. The boost fooler does nothing without injectors. I would not recommend any of these to stock truck. Ccv mod is supposed to help with boot leaks around your IC has nothing to do with the turbo what do ever. Lol this guy has had 586k people watch this.

First thing I think of with you Zoo Dad mod, is NO! Really! You are providing a pathway for air to divert from the a/c condenser, radiator, powerstering, transmission cooler to then assist in cooling the engine??!! DUDE. Your 7.3 is liquid cooled. Eliminate the Doo dad Zoo Dad Mod. Make sure your heat exchangers, mentioned above, are clean, not leaking, and they have all of the proper air dams installed to divert air through them. Make sure any electrical fans and/or mechanical fans are in proper order. Make sure your radiator cap is functioning properly. Rad. hoses pressurising???? Its important!

The reason I have the zoodad mod isn't to cool the engine, it's to get as much clean fresh air to the intake. and yes like the drag truck/ cars do the same thing only on a larger scale. is also similar to a long ram intake that gets out of the engine bay for cooler air.
