Birdtricks is the best parrot trainers internationally! Honestly watching their videos, following their advice and buying the toys for my bird has been such a big change for my birds! I was following ALL THE WRONG ADVICE... like it was so bad I was using a towel to get my budgie out of the cage (told it was okay to do so by the breeder), I was feeding a cheap seed diet 😅 🙃 and I was not training properly at ALL... Birdtricks changed all that for me, as soon as I watched their videos I change EVERYTHING. And now I have 3 budgie buddies and a friendly green cheek who I am working on free flying with my daughters 😁 thank you Birdtricks!!! 😊

Also, just cause they are parrots doesn’t mean they will talk or even mimic things. Yes, some do but don’t get your hopes up too high and then get disappointed and stop taking care of your bird well because the only reason you got it was to show off how smart and cute it was supposed to be🙄

Excellent information from BirdTricks, as usual 💖 I personally appreciated the emphasis on how colored toys are more to please humans 😂 I’ve found this to be so true with my own flock. My birds greatly prefer toys that look like what they would find in nature. I hope this vid reaches far and wide. Wonderful, digestible points and tips for anyone new or not so new to parrot care 💖🦜 👏👏👏

Thank you Jamie Leigh and Dave. You made me feel a lot better about the cage thing. I have a very sweet 14 year old Amazon that I have had for 6 years. She was a rescue....so I have tried to learn everything possible about her diet and care. She had fatty liver disease when I got her and almost died. So along with learning what to feed her, I have tried my best to enrich her life. I love having her out of the cage, and she spends a fair amount out most days. Thanks to your videos, which she seems to enjoy btw, I am learning how to target train her and she is a natural : ) However, I live in a tiny house in Virginia. We heat with wood and there are so many things that could hurt her especially in the wintertime.She is very happy and content to be in her "house",but I was feeling like I was depriving her. She has a huge cage and as many toys as I can afford on my fixed income, but I still felt guilty for keeping her in her cage when I am concerned about her getting into something she shouldn't.....she has gained so much confidence that she wants to explore everywhere. So anyway thanks for your very informative videos.

My Rainbow Lorikeet doesn't have a cage, he has a room to play in, a house to sleep or chill out in (on a high ledge in my bedroom), a pak-o-bird for outside time or trips, and the whole house to fly around in. I am home all the time so he is never alone. He spent some years in a cage with out of cage time too. He prefers to live with me than having anything to do with a cage. We are both very happy with this arrangement, just me and my darling Simon.

I think the snuggle hut issue does depend on the bird though. My first bird, a green cheeked conure, used it to sleep in at night and my room does get pretty cold at night, so that was great. He never picked at the fabrics or anything and barely touched it during the day. With my second bird, a cockatiel, I had to remove it because he`s super destructive and eats everything he can put his beak on. It's kind of funny because I always thought of cockatiels as the gentler birds.

An added benefit of feeding the seasonal chop is there are No Pantry Moths in it like there are in EVERY type and brand of seed I ever purchased. Which used to be a continual battle to trying to keep them under control (ie. dead) especially at certain times of the year they were much worse. I would even keep the bulk of the seed in the freezer and a small covered container in use, nothing seemed to make much of a difference. So GLAD those days are over!

Great info. Thx. I just groomed a B&G for a guy who just adopted him from the Long Island Parrot Society (I’ve been a member since 2007). I sent him this video u posted because I think it will help him. Tho he’s got bird experience and I think will do fine - I just think there are some parts of what u said that may sway him to new things. Like cooking for the birds. This bird seemed to me to b a very sweet guy, he just needs someone who actually cares about him. He had horrible perches and no idea what to do with toys. The new owner has already gotten better perches & a variety. I brought over a sissel rope from Natural Inspirations for him too. And it only took him 2 days to get him to step up on his arm. I knew he was a good bird. The guy is just having issues to keep him from going straight to his shoulder. I’m rambling now but if u have any info on how to stop a macaw from walking up ur arm to your shoulder that would b helpful. Thx guys, keep up the great work.

I feel like the issue with cages is that soooo many are way to small, barren and boring. How many birds are stuck in a tiny cage with barely enough room to turn around, pet stores sell the cheapest cage they can to make a sale, and the bird suffers. I cover my birds cage on one side because we sleep in the same room. I'm as quiet as I can be but it's a compromise, much better than sleeping in the living room and my birds dont pick at it.

@sharynzoo
@sharynzoo 4 жыл бұрын
And the big problem is that the people who are buying the birds don't know any different. They don't do any research just impulse buying. The pet stores tell them What cage to get? And what crap to feed it? As you said just to make a sale. And once that bird is sold. They put another one in its place in a second. It's a never-ending hell for the birds 💔

Thank you both! I have a Military Macaw that I have owned since she was 8 weeks old. Her mother abandoned her She's been a sweetheart until she's turned 17. We moved to another state when she was 17. I noticed f Qaeda fairly quickly..in approximately 3 months, aggressiveness began...reaching out biting, would chase me across the room and attack. I took her to the vet...blood tests etc., and nothing was found that wasn't a normal panel. They asked about food, she had a pellet diet but is offered fresh food a couple of times a week which she promptly throws out of her cage, pellets as well. She has been hormonal for the past 10 years but at its worst from 6 yes ago up to now. Quite honestly, I'm now afraid of my bird and won't handle her because I just get attacked. I ordered your 3 books on diet and rec'd them yesterday. I offered fresh food this morning....she looks down at it...looks up at me with a "what the heck is this" and again it goes everywhere. I won't give up but I didn't want to have a bird that hates me. Anyway, I am encouraged to continue trying and wanted to thank you so much for your videos. I LOVE THEM and enjoy both of you so much.

Hi! Even though I don't have birds, I really enjoy your videos about birds. I've always wondered what can people do with birds who yell and shout profanities? How can an adopted talking bird be taught not to scream and yell profanities taught by previous owners?? If I had a young bird I would never teach the bird such a thing.

Awesome! Lol I must admit I had to watch the tail in the mouth a couple of times 😂.. so if a bird becomes accustomed to being covered if that is a possibility would you then just stopped covering them or would you wean it out like you do everything else? My cockatiels spend a lot of time out of their cage (which is kind of big) and they have the food that they should have (pellets, fresh vegetables and fruit and seeds), they have water and a lot of toys that they bite and destroy but sometimes when they are inside and I come back from eating or something like that they strat screaming and pacing from one side to the other like they want to get out, normally they don’t do that and they only do that when I’m out for a long time, they also live with 2 lovebirds but they don’t fight since they are used to be together without any problem because they have been with each other since they are babies, so does that mean that they don’t like being inside the cage and they take as punishment or are they ok with it?

I wonder if the snuggle hut and cage cover is specific to types of birds. My male parrotlet loves his snuggle hut. It is his bed and he loves going to bed at night. It has never triggered hormones, he’s never gotten territorial over it and he’s never chewed on it. My daughter always puts a cage cover over her cockatiels cage and has never had any of these issues either.

It's definitely not a problem for all birds I totally agree. But it is a problem for a lot of birds so it's just something they don't need even though they like it. They don't have snuggle Huts in the wild. But whatever works for your birds is fine as long as they don't ingest the felt of the Hut it's not a problem. And it's the female birds that you have to worry about getting a hormonal because they could get egg bound.

We have big wooden toy for our cockatiel but he doesn't seem to try destroy it (He is more into my wooden desk or my shelfs).should we change the toy for maybe smaller one ?
@sharynzoo

Absolutely change the toy. Offer all different toys until you find some he likes. Definitely distract him with something else to bite on other than your shelf and desk. That's when you offer the smaller toy and teach him that this is what he chews on not your desk and shelves 💕

Can i use peanuts for treats but leave them in the husk to give my bird something to kinda forage for the treat ?
@sharynzoo

I would stay away from peanuts. I would stick a couple of almonds or walnuts in a foraging toy it's much safer than peanuts due to their possible toxicity.

What about if we cover the cage with cage cover or some curtain to prevent parrots from cold temperature. Like it's currently 6C in my city and we can prevent purselfves with blancket but what about the birds?
@sharynzoo
@sharynzoo 3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely cover part of the cage leave the front part open if your house is very cold you do not want them getting cold. What they are saying is that they don't want the cage to become a breeding box. But you also want to keep them safe from the draft. They do sell heaters that you can put in the cage and the bird sits next to the heater they are specifically made for birds.

Could you recommend a sleep cage for a Sun Conure?
@sharynzoo
@sharynzoo 4 жыл бұрын
None of my birds have a sleep cage. But if you want to have a separate cage for your sunny it's easy enough. If it's just for sleeping at night in a quiet dark room, then any cage will do 💕 As long as it's cozy & has a nice perch to sleep on your baby should be happy 💕 Make sure the birds has access to water and food if it needs it. After awhile, your bird will know this is a safe place to sleep & will be happy to go in every night 💕

UGH! Snuggle huts are only good for my pet RATS! I end up purchasing a LOT of so-called "bird' toys for my rats, and though I don't presently have a bird (I just love them!), I wondered why any of these snuggle huts were appropriate for a pet. Same with the plastic toys, which are AWFUL. It seemed like if you gave them a plastic toy, they'd tear it up and ingest it. . .and if it's dangerous for your dog. . .right? Thanks for a fantastic video!

if my birds cage is in my computer room for example, and i am working late but the bird is used to it (somewhat) should i still have them sleep in a totally light disturbance free room? i turn all the lights in the room off, but ofc there is light from the pc screen. i dont want to disturb their sleep, so i use headphones, im just worried the keyboard noise or changing light from the PC screen may affect them

I live in a small apartment with a Jenday Conure. He is VERY loud. I sometimes break up the day with a cage cover just to muffle some of the noise. What do you suggest to divert the behavior so he'll quiet down instead of covering?
@sharynzoo
@sharynzoo 4 жыл бұрын
If I were you I would be figuring out why your bird is screaming. Conures are Extremely Loud but they're screaming for a reason. That's their communication. So what I suggest to you is to get different toys and find out what your bird likes. Foraging toys always keep them occupied. You can get toys where you hide little treats in them and they have to go hunting through the foraging toy to get them. They're very smart and they get bored very easily. So if your bird can't be out with you all the time you need to keep it occupied in some way. Changing the toys around always helps as well this way they don't get bored with just one or two toys. We always rotate our toys. They love to chew on things so if you get wood toys that your bird could rip apart that would keep him occupied as well. Sometimes a TV might help. I always have cartoons on for my birds all day long and they're never screaming. I have 8 Conures and they are quiet all day long. I have 45 Birds and I have cameras on all of them. When I'm not around and the cartoons are on you wouldn't even know there's a bird in the house. You can also try soft soothing music that might help also. A conure is definitely a tough bird to have in a small apartment. I hope these little tips help you 💕

@@sharynzoo I actually just adopted him Saturday. He came with one perch and one chewed up toy. He is most likely so bored. Plus it's a new environment...he came from a home of larger birds and most likely picked up the screaming from them? I have a cart of different swings, wood chew toys, wooden perches and a mirror with beads. What treats would you recommend? The only thing he's responding to at the moment are bananas and peanuts. I did give him unsalted sunflower seeds mixed in with the conure food. But I recently found out he's accustomed to the cockatiel food from walmart.

I offered Kale, strawberry, cherry and pear...not a fan. Also dried chili peppers specifically for birds. Didn't like those either
@sharynzoo
@sharynzoo 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize you just got the bird. They don't like change and the bird is probably traumatized from the change. You really need to work with the bird because it needs to have interaction either with another conure or with a human. They are incredibly social Birds and they really need the mental stimulation or they're going to scream. I would offer your bird almonds or walnuts As a treat. I would ditch the peanuts and sunflower seeds. I would try to offer all kinds of fruits and vegetables but I would chop them up so the pieces are really small. I would then put in some kind of seed that that bird is used to in the chop. As the bird is picking around the fruits and vegetables to find the seeds he will realize that he might like some of the fruits and vegetables you're offering. You can even get the mixed frozen vegetables in a bag and chop them up with some apple or any other fruit that you think he might enjoy. It takes a while to figure out what they like but he really should be on a high-quality pelleted diet along with some seeds but mostly pellets. Be careful with the nuts though because they are high in fat and they tend to get a fatty liver. So again just as a treat. Mine also like plain Cheerios for a treat.
