Good points. I'd add a caveat: Before bothering with 1, 2, or 3, follow Maile's advice. Too many people try to turn business building into a job. What I mean by this is that they assume they should get paid hourly. The best sites have hundreds (if not thousands) of hours that go into creating contents/programs that deeply satisfy their users. Once that is all up and running, then each of these, particularly 2, and 3, become that much easier.

I believe that a lot folks should really get started promoting their small business on the web. I also reckon that ranking in the major serps will be an incredible starting point. Wonderful video!

SEO is simple. Lots of high quality unique content, Good organization. Stay involved and pay attention to what Google says matters (authorship, canonical, originality, structure). Don't be stupid or take short cuts. Maile is a refreshing change from Matt but she could pick up the pace a little, we're not all in elementary school.

One very common mistake is to worry too much about current trends in SEO. Constantly building diverse backlinks from many different sources (blog comments, social bookmarks, blog posts, etc) has always worked and will continue in the future. It is important to keep the rate of linkbuilding up, and not be frightened off by the latest scare story that 'SEO is dead' because it's never been true.

for example, if the search was film, you could have filters in the sidebar like "indie films" "short films" etc. recognizing that these sites have to compete against giant companies like Time Warner or Disney. Something to think about.

Question: Being new to Internet Marketing and not fully understanding all of the facets of SEO, I am puzzled by a suggestion given to me by others who claim the following, "Do not monetize your site upon building it. Wait first for the traffic and then incorporate your monetization." Google does not like it when you create a site and include offers and ads on the site even before you have the traffic. Is this true?

Hi Maile, Thank you very much for your pointers, though I'd like to see more description for some of the points. In your SEO Instructions, what does "Be Smart about your tags and Site architecture" mean? My four small sites seem to be avoiding all the SEO mistakes and black-hat no-no's. They're listed in Webmstr Tools and Analytics and I manage those frequently. I'm always adding well researched content, and minimizing affiliate links. Although they are getting some traffic, and there's been no manual actions against them, none of them are ranking anywhere for any keywords I'm trying to rank for, and they seem to be non-existant in the SERP's for anything, though they are indexed and the sitemaps are up-to-date. I want to be on Google's good side. What am I missing?? These are the kind of answers I've been searching for. After a page has been indexed, is it detrimental to adjust the site title to a more descriptive one?

Yes great vdeo. SEO and the ethics behind SEO is changing all the time. It's important to focus on quality whatever it is you are doing.

We've had our website for 11 years - its so hard to keep up when they change the algorithms, things we have done before dont work now. I guess we get stuck in "trends". But when our site is built on those trends as the time, we now need to change everything or we just keep falling in our keyword rankings. "avoid keyword density" thats how our main pages were built. I wish the age of the site had more value than it seems to - Ive seen brand new sites come and outrank us - its frustrating.

About that being agile point. How long should the cycle be? So I make a change, how long should I keep that change before I try something else and see if that something else will do better?

Contradiction? - Mistake #4 - write content that is "readable, compelling, and informative," and don't give in to the latest SEO trends. This sounds most elegant until you listen to Mistake #5 - be "agile" enough to adapt your site to keep up with Google's latest SEO trends. Am I missing something that makes this not a complete contradiction? Not trying to be smart. Simply new to this subject, and not sure how to square #4 and #5.
