I remember watching a video a while back about some deleted scenes from _Home Alone_ , and it made me realise that only when learning what *could* have been during film production is when you truly feel like you've gone back in time. I feel like it's the same for geopolitics, and how this and that country, state or whatever *could* have been established, but didn't.

I was not expecting Intermarium, mainly because even as a concept, it was always supposed to be some sort of a Federation or an alliance, rather than a single country, but it's cool that it got included. Piłsudski is, in my opinion, really an overlooked and interesting historical figure, quite a complex and paradoxical one, if you look closely (and controversial). I'm glad that he simingly starts to get some international attention. There's a brand new biography of him, written by American historian Joshua D. Zimmerman.

It was supposed to be a confederacy like modern EU to deter any attempts of Russians and Germans to once again rule the Central Europe. As a Bengali from the state of West Bengal India, I would like to point out that Bengal had always been one province since the start of British rule in India which started with Bengal being annexed by the British East India Company after their victory at the Battle of Plassey against the last Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah on 23rd June, 1757 (by unfair means nonetheless). However, they divided Bengal along religious lines to quell the nationalist movements taking place in Bengal at that time. This happened in 1905 leading to the creation of East Bengal (later becoming East Pakistan now Bangladesh) and West Bengal (later broken up further to make the states of Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand in India). My grandmother was from Barisal in Bangladesh. Hope to visit it oneday.

Indonesia and Malaysia was also almost United. At the ending days of WW2, before Japan officially surrendered, our leaders met in Kuala Lumpur and agree to unite the NUSANTARA into a single state. But the plan was failed and Indonesia declared our own Independence on 17th August 1945. There was also a proposal to unite Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines into a some kind of union called Maphilindo, but also failed due to Malaysia annexed North Borneo and Sarawak which pissed off Indonesian and Philippines leader at that time

Another one: Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics, aka a capitalist/democratic Soviet Union. It was proposed by Gorbachev in 1991 as a last ditch attempt to save the USSR. Most of the Soviet Republics were onboard with the idea, but then the August 1991 Coup happened and well…we all know how that went. Even today, many Russians and other citizens from the former Soviet countries don’t miss communism, but do wish the Soviet Union survived without it.

Intermarium was stupidly optimistic. WW1 was the peak of nationalism. All of the proposed states within that alliance had just gained their national sovereignty from the fall of Russia/Austria. No way would these newly independent states want to join another empire after removing their previous rulers. We all know how unstable Yugoslavia was, Intermarium would’ve been a even worse version of that.
@Artur_M.
@Artur_M. Жыл бұрын
Yeah, although it was rather a nebulous concept of some sort of a Confederation of countries, rather than a country. Assuming it could be created, the bigger it would get, the looser it probably would end up being. So, something more like the EU than Yugoslavia.
@manwiththeredface7821
@manwiththeredface7821 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't stupidly optimistic, the newly formed tiny and weak countries were too arrogant (being from one of them myself) to work together in a continent that was soon to be like shark infested water. Intermarium was the last chance of Eastern Europe to avoid the horrible 50 years it had to endure and to learn the fact that from a global perspective we are all in the same shoes therefore our outside threats are the same as well.

I have to add that you didn't mention a crucial point about Patria Grande. It's conceptualization stems from the original plan of the main liberators of South America, Bolivar and San Martín, to make all the spanish colonies in South America 1 country. This idea predates the creation of the countries themselves, which is amazing in and of itself. Of course, creating a country spaning 10,000 kilometers, wildly different cultures and in a postcolonial warring state is complicated so it didn´t pan out; but still, an important point.

A unified Latin America would've been an enormous superstate and potentially a very powerful country with a huge economy. The problem though is this vast area holds a multitude of peoples with very different customs, values and interests. Even if they all speak some dialect of Spanish, they still have plenty of differences they would need to overcome. Still if it had actually formed and worked out, I can't help but wonder how history would have changed. Such a country would have alot of internal problems but so much potential.

Sth I missed with Bengal was mentioning that there had been a Bengal sultanate for 200 years before at one point in the past, just like there had been a Trebizont kingdom with pontic greeks for example.

I thought about starting my own country a while back. I used to go window shopping on the web for islands. You'd be surprised how many are on the market. Anyway, this one in the Finger Lakes caught my eye. Cool facilities already up like a helicopter port, large dock, row of cottages, a cafeteria, riding trail, and tennis courts, as well as a sauna. Some Swedish company was selling it. There was plenty of room for things like shore batteries, anti-aircraft guns, and a shallow harbor that could be easily mined. I mean, what's a country without coastal defenses? I was going to plagerize my national anthem from Mel Brooks 2000 Year old Man bit: "Let em all go to hell, except for cave 76." It would have something along those lines. Alas, the asking price was 13 million and my petty cash was a bit light at the time. But it would have been beautiful. Of course, with the world being in the state it is these days perhaps me and Wilson would be better off finding something a bit further from the mainland. So long as I can still get Amazon Prime and Netflix of course. This is the 21st Century after all. I'm not breaking sod and fighting cowboys and Indians in rural Kansas. Anyway, cool video. If I do start my own country, I'll let ya know. Maybe you can feature it.

Can't you do a thing on LA/SoCal? Both since you live there and know the place, there's so much to dig into in that whole metropolitan area!

I am Greek and this Pontus thing and these areas...yeah it hurts. Around a century ago we tried to take them back by force but we failed and yeah the population either got killed or fled. It is a really tragic story for us and we all know about it.

Some good candidates for this: South Korea: Almost lost the Korean war to the North initially until US intervention. Taiwan: Could have fully ceased to exist if Communist China attacked the Taiwan island immediately as the Nationalists fled and not wait. Vatican City (Papal States): If Mussolini did not give them independence but instead forced the Pope to surrender. United Kingdom: If Scotland won the independence vote (which it lost narrowly).

@@nuzayerov The UK would've still existed if the vote went the other way though, they just would have to change the end of their name from "...of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" to "...of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland". Still the same country ultimately.
