5 cycling skills that you can learn anywhere. Some are essential bike skills, others are just fun... But, all of them will help to push your riding and general skill level on.
Practice them and let us know how you get on!

00:14 #1 Cycling Backwards
Riding backwards?! Right. It's not an essential skill, but, it's going to help with balance, pedalling skills and more! Can you do this one? Tell us down in the comments 👇
00:37 #2 Bunnyhop
We have covered the bunnyhop a lot. It's an essential skill. You don't need to be able to bunnyhop really high, but, you do need to be able to bunnyhop over curbs, over road debris and more. If you can't bunnyhop, you need to learn! Find a soft grass area or bit of space and get to work. Search "bunnyhop gcn" on KZfaq for more of our tutorials including one by the legendary Martyn Ashton.
01:07 #3 The Wheelie
Another skill we've repeatedly said you should learn. Sure, you might never want to do the perfect wheelie, find your balance point and ride on your back wheel for miles, but, if you can effectively lift your front wheel up, it'll help you to climb better off-road, get on and off curbs and avoid trash in the road.
01:37 #4 The Trackstand
Let's call this one a near-essential skill. Whether you're balancing at traffic lights, or, just riding really slowly up a climb like Lasty, this one will be useful. Again, we have some detailed tutorials on this - search "trackstand gcn" for more.
01:55 #5 Picking up objects
Picking up objects is not an essential skill, but, again, practicing this one will help you to move on your riding, particularly one handed.
Got a favourite cycling skill? Should we make a part 2? Tell us in the comments and we'll set Chris a few challenges.

I almost did a wheelie while going up a steep slope and recently a video on GCN showed a pro rider who went wheelie while on a slope too. So I reckon the best way is to practice like that assisted by gravity, with normal shoes of course. That and trackstand are the 2 things I deifinitely want to learn.

i am scared s#@&less to try a wheelie, but a club rider taught me to deal with a dropped chain whilst riding ! just reach down and put it back on the chainring and slowly pedal forward and bob's yer uncle ! very useful on a club ride or in a race, as long as you are a very experience bike handler and rider. Not for new riders.

As a kid falling off the bike was nothing, just a few scratchers no big deal but now after one day that the pedal broke I have the fear of falling down again or the chain coming off the bike and I just don't know what to do. And I'm a bit overweight so every time I feel like if I stand up while riding the pedals will broke and I'm going to be on the ground.

How can I bunny hop if I'm using flat pedals ? Usually its easier when using bmx bikes but on road bikes how ? I only able to push my back wheel as Dan said on his vid about bunny hop. But I can't lift my bike when I'm almost there. Is pedals matter ? Or just keep practicing ?

i would really like to learn how to trackstand, but i'm ever scared practicing it becouse of the clipless pedals, if i lose balance i will probabibly fall to the ground still attached to the bike, any hint? it's worth trying it on an other bike or with normal shoes?
@gcn

Paolo - 100% worth learning with your normal shoes. Plus, find a grassy area. It's a softer landing and we've all been there with the trackstand practice fails.
