The exercise study mentioned in the video: www.mdc.edu/ma...
--
One of my dream projects is to tell the story of Tamer Elnoury -- a Muslim-American, FBI agent, and an unsung hero. This episode of the genre series was a small attempt in that direction.
The five military habits are:
1. Make your bed.
2. Exercise First Thing in the Morning
3. Reverse Planning
4. Create Checklist protocols
5. Plan each day the night before
Thanks for watching.
With love and respect,
Nikhil

@@m7mdusaid Being organised & creating routines help. People in the military are put through immense pressure so naturally trained from the get go to handle that when that would happen for real. A monotonous routine also helps you obsess over things less. Chances of distraction or stress grows lower. It's not even a military thing. Even Jordan Peterson in his lectures emphasizes on creating routines & sticking to it. Only disadvantage of it can be sticking to it for too long & not adapting it when necessary but the overall advantages completely outweigh the minor disadvantage.

It's great that life is going well for you now but at 19 you are very young for offering life advice to people. Spend a few years at the grind and get a bit of experience behind you. By all means share your experience via KZfaq in the sense of contributing to a community of people who share the same ideals as you but don't try and turn yourself into a guru like so many people on YT are trying to do.

Yea you’ve only been doing good for 8 months an 19 years old you can preach advice when you’re 30 cuz at 19 you don’t know anything and haven’t been doing it long enough to offer any useful advice you shouldn’t be worried about a KZfaq channel but rather keeping yourself from falling off course

I learned these things from my dad. He was a badass CAF sniper. That dude was beyond methodical but very adaptable at the same time. He would be like 4 hours ahead of everyone under all circumstances. He applied what they trained into him in his everyday life. For example: he always had whatever hed need for the following day laid out for himself, we'd be going to bed and he'd be setting up the kitchen then laying out his clothes etc. He noticed fucking everything too. Hed tell me things he observed out the window of the truck like animal tracks, berries, bird nests. I read years later that this is an observation 'game' snipers play to keep sharp.

Me as a punk kid would often forget how dangerous he was and wed argue, I'd yell at him and stomp around and hed just look at me like "are you serious?" hahaha dude was unflappable.

Picked up LOTS of useful tips here beyond just the main five. Some things that have helped me deal with similar issues (btw I'm using this comment for myself to organize my thoughts more on this topic and copy and paste into my journal): - trouble getting started: Use "momentum = completion" from the book The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen (I think Captain Sinbad's mentioned that book before too). Do the needed planning, set up your needed stuff and environment, and then just focus on doing only the first step - that's all you need to complete what you need to do - thats enough to build the needed momentum - after the first step you'll naturally, automatically take the second and third step and keep going. - for planning and then executing the plan: Break down the goal / objective into its smallest parts. Then focus on the first three steps, then the next three after that. Literally repeat the names of those next 3 steps in your head (and over and over) and you're giving your brain instructions that it will have to follow - using how the brain can only think one thought at a time (and replacing sabotaging thoughts, feelings, beliefs, with the instructions you want o give your brain instead). Example: tired and maybe unmotivated to go to the gym: repeatedly think to yourself the words "dress, bag, keys. Dress, bag, keys. Dress, bag, keys" etc. then, once at the gym, "abs, arms, legs" or "weights, run, stretch" and repeating those words (or instructions) in your mind over and over again will override and replace any other thoughts, and you'll find yourself just doing those things because you're literally telling your brain to do them. - a friend (who has actually become really successful) was in the military and from it, picked up SOP's - "standard operating procedures" and created personal SOPs to automate his daily stuff in his personal / home life - the standard checklists Captain Sinbad talks about in this video, my friend made for morning and evening routines and all redundant household tasks from cleaning, bills, meal prep, all chores, etc. It's key to what (in his book The Slight Edge), Jeff Olsen calls "mastering the mundane". - and from the world of addiction self help (always useful to learn from whether one has addictions or not): A recovering alcoholic friend shared with me "HALT" or HALTO - an acronym for areas you've got to maintain or your progress in anything will be halted. It means do what it takes so that you never get too: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, and Overweight & Out of shape. I would also add purpose and focus in their somewhere (like always know what your goals are and what your next smallest steps are toward them so you can always be progressively working toward and accomplishing them. - so you never get confused, indecisive, bored and / or have times in the day where you have "nothing to do", waste time, get side tracked, distracted, etc. - when being nervous about having to troubleshoot something / being worried about whether you'll be able to find the answers and figure the things out that you need to: Just make sure you begin with the end in mind, plan in reverse, set up your equipment and environment, and as long as you've done that, when you've done everything you need to do to set yourself up for success, focus, and deep work, then REMIND YOURSELF OF WHAT YOU WANT out of the process - what's your goal (maybe even write it down or you already have), and then REMIND YOURSELF TO: TRUST THE PROCESS. You'll figure out what you'll need to, as you need to / as you go (like you always do and always have with any problem you've ever had in the past). REMEMBER TO JUST TRUST THE PROCESS. This is to banish worry and fear-based stalling or procrastination, over thinking, and paralysis of analysis, making it easy and effortless to take the first and next steps. WHEN YOU KNOW TO JUST TRUST THE PROCESS AND JUST DIVE IN, YOU'LL FIND IT'S IN THE PROCESS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS. Often, by working the problem while completely trusting the process, you will surprise yourself and it can be like you're creating positive solutions and outcomes out of thin air. As you work the process for anything troubleshoot, problem solve, any effort), solutions insights, and outcomes can and will seemingly appear as if out of thin air. And often, surprisingly, better outcomes than you could even have imagined. (And when other people are involved, almost always, "the magic" can include ideas, solutions, outcomes, and experiences that no one alone would've or could've imagined or foreseen before it happened. - another way to combat fear, worry, and anxiety: The body can't tell the difference from anxiety and excitement - the mind determines the difference. So focus on things about achieving your wanted outcome that you're excited about, (begin with the end in mind, visualize), and shift your focus to those things and feelings of excitement. It's called "creating an anchor thought". -what is it about that task and or outcome that gives you something to look forward to etc. that is stronger and more important than anything it will take to overcome to get there? The first thing to do when you go to bed and and wake up in the morning is to think of what you're excited about doing and solving and making progress on for that day ahead. Think of the efforts, obstacles and problems as an adventure and things to be excited about conquering, overcoming, and achieving mastery over. - And finally, never forget: - "done is better than perfect' - DON'T engage in black or white thinking. - DON'T engage in all or nothing thinking. - be prepared and responsible for "the worst" that could happen, but instead of catastrophising (BELIEVING the worst will happen), create the reality you want by making that reality happen instead: focus only on what you can control and decide on and visualize what you want Instead, and then take the needed actions toward that end. - Remember progress not perfection, (and if perfection is even a goal, with consistent practice over time, perfection or at least a very high level of competence and confidence will come), - Something is ALWAYS better than nothing, - and my personal favorite: "half-assed beats no-assed" - all the time, every time. 😁 - practice noticing negative, self sabotaging thoughts. Practice a zero negativity policy. Be aware of all negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones that support forward action and momentum. - whenever you think you can't do something, remind yourself that you can ALWAYS do SOMETHING so ask yourself WHAT CAN YOU DO? and focus on and do that. - do what you can, with what you have, where you are. - the most minute, smallest positive action in the direction of your goals may seem too insignificant and pointless, unnecessary, a waste of time, and not worth doing. But that's totally wrong and even very dangerously very deceptive. In fact, this is the main point of Jeff Olsen's Slight Edge book - The smallest positive action in the direction of your goals CAN and DOES and WILL matter and WILL make a difference and is VERY important. (Example: too tired before bed? Doesn't matter cuz it's "just one night?" No - DO that night routine anyway. Just focus on the smallest first three steps at a time: repeatedly think "brush, floss, face. Brush, floss, face" and do the same with the next three steps after that, etc. Then take steps to start earlier next time or not be so tired in the first place, simplify the night time routine, habituate it so it's automatic, etc., etc. Learn, do, review, (and course correct /tweak, improve, and repeat.) - when you stumble, instead of self hate, be the friend and coach you need in the moment - ask yourself what you learned, course correct and adjust and just imperfectly pick up where you left off. Just focus on rebuilding momentum, not perfection. A bad morning doesn't have to turn into a bad day, a bad day doesn't have to turn into a bad week, or a week to month, month to year, etc. - Do it until you're good at it. - Do it until it's automatic (you don't even have to think about it). - Do it until it's fun.

I watched this in one sitting, while gradually understanding how incredibly relevant this is to my current predicament. At the beginning I was like "oh, a Captain video in my youtube, let's give it a watch". Then I was like "hey, that's actually very useful to me right now". At the end I was "man, that was amazing, I feel so motivated to implement all of this". This moved me. I'm very impressed by my own (almost subconscious) response to what I saw and heard, and I'm extremely grateful to you for making this. Then I was thinking "man I really gotta do something to show my appreciation! What could I do? There must be a feature people use in cases like this!". And then I remembered the damn like button :)

Sometimes, when I need to study something new but feel intimidated by the material or simply don’t have the energy for it, I set a timer, typically for about 30 minutes. I’m a dropout, so I’m not studying to pass an exam; I’m studying to experience genuine enlightenment, because it’s the best feeling in the world. Anyway, what I’ve found is, I tend to inevitably end up racing to *understand* as much as possible in the least amount of time. It’s weird how I get competitive with myself. And oh boy, there’s nothing like an adrenaline rush to make sure you’ve “got it” when the timer hits 5 minutes. When time elapses, you reset it, and go again. This is how I break into new fields of understanding, until the subject doesn’t intimidate me anymore. When I’m feeling confident, I’ll proceed to study effectively endlessly, or in the words of Elon Musk, “until I’m dead or incapacitated”. Hopefully this approach helps someone. Oh, and Captain Sinbad...your videos are incredible! 🔥✨❤️

This video made me feel like shit. I was on it earlier this year, running every day, working out after, eating good, mentally strong. I accomplished so many things and hit so many goals. Turned from couldn't run half a block to doing a half marathon with ease, with plans of wanting to do marathons by this time right now and eventually into ultras. Then I got injured from overtraining, couldn't run, needed to take weeks off. 6 weeks off turned into 8, to months, to now. Didn't accomplish anything during lockdown, everyone seemed to thrive off of it and get lots done. I relaxed in the sun and had fun with the family in the garden. Now I find myself getting fatter from my hobby of cooking, I sit most of the day programming, wishing something would tick in the back of my mind to push me back into working out/fitness, or living more of a getting shit done type of life. I've read all them books, watched all the military movies and interviews countless times, was a Goggins head, but now I just feel like shit again. Off and on for the past decade. I'm now in the off stage wanting to turn from 0 to 1. I think this video may have sparked my interest into starting again from nothing, to hitting those small targets every day that made me feel great. Let's see if I can create habit again. I need that structure.

Captain Sinbad I don't know how I landed on your channel but I subscribed immediately within 2 minutes of your video. And it's just the no B.S way you talk and tell the stuff straightup. The very first video of yours I've seen. Very interesting you present just fast enough to be exciting yet not rushed just confident. Your comment section quality and respect is also amazing. I'm looking forward to learning from you. Respect.

I now understand that i did the reverse planning by accident. I had an idea in mind and because it is an idea that im not yet knowledgeable enough to do at once, i broke it down and made a simplified version of it to do first to then scale up. This way I’ll focus on learning the material at each stage and then compile the whole thing. It really works and not only that it helps clear the mind a lot. Thanks for this Amazing video!

I feel you on finding the balance between underplanning and overplanning. Trying to be to intricate with my planning often led to me quickly breaking away from the schedule, and abandoning it. So instead I have a checklist of things I need to do. I don't usually make a checklist for daily habits, because habits by definition are supposed to be things you do without really thinking about them. But I DO make a checklist for things I want to/need to get done, so that if I forget later, when I have free time, I can just look at the checklist and see what's there. It helps a lot.

Great endeavor, and well thought out... as a career military officer in SOF, I will tell you that you’re closer to what you stated you’re trying to achieve than you realize... if you stay on this path. If these are elements in life that you’re intrigued by, why not enter the military and train to go to one of the SOF Assessment & Selection courses, or apply to the Bureau? Either way, your project is a valuable pursuit, and you (and others watching) will benefit from these efforts. Good Luck.

Among many others, 8:08 is one of the reasons that Captain Sinbad is my favourite KZfaqr: "I still don't full understand what I've been doing this whole week." Not only is that just funny, but it's so refreshing in amongst everything else that is like "13 ways that I am better than you!" and stuff.

Hey, a good overview. of a lot of things. Sinbad A regard to Checklists . A pilot myself, The endless checklists on the ground and in the air seem like overwhelming at first. But the inculcation of that procedure worked well in life.It keeps you focused on that goal. It sets aside human behaviour to forget steps and cutting corners which could bring disaster. . I want to thank you for highlighting our Patriots of the Muslim faith that stepped in to help us. A lot of our boys would not have made it home without them. Innocent lives have been saved because of their Duty., Courage. Love. Thank you for the video.

Look into the AAR or After Action Review. After doing things, big or small such as a video or your day. Once complete, ask yourself the following questions: - What was supposed to happen? - What actually happened? - What elements that you could improve? - What elements could you sustain, or continue doing? Once you begin this, it’s incredibly effective and easy to do! If you need any help, let me know!

Great intro, whats helps me most is not allowing myself to watch youtube until I complete my daily goals, and also checklists are godly for any scale of project with similar structure, everytime I go through the process (2 weeks long in my case) I find so many small optimizations and shortcuts. Another tip to build onto the reverse planning is to lay out what you have to do for the next 6 months, as if you had to do it all in one month, how much would you have to do each day, each week. Work expands to the time you allocate to it🔥

The military has built up an incredible amount of institutional knowledge for hacking life to do things as efficiently as possible to be as productive as possible, and I'm always looking to discover and incorporate those practices in my own life. Early morning workouts are a great way to start the day; however, I'll read, journal, and drink my coffee before hitting the gym to focus my mind. I think you'd like The Warrior's Book of Virtues by Nick Benas, et al. It's a great, quick read for anyone interested in diving further into the warrior mindset.
