I went on a film photography work trip to The Maldives assisting my friend Aubrey and picked up a Polaroid SX70 to document the experience! I also put a roll through my Nikonos V and Mamiya RB67 whilst there. It was quite an adventure!
I shot Portra 400 in the RB, Tmax P3200 in the Nikonos and SX70 Instant film in the Polaroid

This video came with a perfect timing; just the right thing to end this week with :) very happy about that! I'm looking forward to your polaroid pictures! Only a month ago I got myself a SX70 as well - and I also struggle with the exposure :D but all in all it's so much fun! I hope you'll have great adventures with yours!

Great work man! I too find myself guessing with the sx-70 from time to time. If you’re really interested in taking Polaroids you might want to look into the Mint time machine. It allows you to dial into your desired shutter speed giving you a lot more control of your photos. It has a hefty price tag but I feel like it’s worth it considering it’s new technology thats accessible and repairable. Especially considering the price for Polaroids these days. Not a whole lot of room for error lol.

I actually scoped that out after I picked this one up haha! Maybe if I end up using the instant stuff in a professional context I’ll be able to justify it, otherwise I’m not sure haha! They do look like amazing tools though

You did great capturing moments and taking photos in the midst of the chaos! You may need a frog tongue for your SX-70, it’s a little insert that prevents the newly exposed Polaroid from getting hit with direct sunlight as it exits the camera. The exposure wheel definitely is tricky! I watched another KZfaqr advise on shooting favoring under exposure (turning the wheel 1 tick to the left if you’re looking at it head on) to avoid losing details. It seems to work pretty well for me. The problems with the Nikonos is why I’m terrified of investing into one! My point-and-shoot Canon WP-1 will have to do for now.

Damn shame about the Nikonos, you seem to be plagued by leaky units unfortunately :/ also can't personally say I'm impressed by the policy of feeding the sharks as a research biologist. That kind of behaviour whilst cool for tourists to see encourages the sharks to come to humans for feeding and increases the risk of human-wildlife conflicts. Otherwise fantastic shots :) I love the polaroids, they have such an in the moment feel and look amazing! I've been shooting/printing on instax wide a fair bit recently and I notice such a major difference between printing and shooting directly it's crazy how the texture and colours differ.

I think the film quality can be a bit hit and miss but sometimes if you get lucky things are really nice haha! Kind of a bummer that it isn’t consistently nice given the price tag though lol

Must be really terrible being you and having to work so hard and in such trying conditions. As for the tribulations you’ll overcome and move ahead. You remind me of my grandson in so many ways and he has overcome many different obstacles in both work, life and health so I have no doubt you will do just fine.

Thanks Gaspar! I just send stuff through the scanner, I used to ask for hand checks but a friend who has traveled very extensively shooting film for jobs told me they don’t worry about it so I haven’t since then and have had no issues haha!

I think at this point just buy an external Nikonos case. Its much better to have a bulky goofy looking waterproof case than buying a new camera every 3 months

Is that going to be the end of Nikonosses for you? Or will you pick up another of the Schatzies? Also, no dates on your Polaroids Will? I think that’s one of the coolest parts to see the sequence of things.

I put the dates on the back! They’re all dated don’t worry haha! I’m actually looking to get these ones fixed somehow, chatting to the repair guy at the moment seeing if logistics can be worked out. Otherwise I have a iii and an iv to use until they let me down at least haha

the sx-70 is an excellent camera with film I really struggle to make work. I've debated paying for the mod to modify the camera for 600 film. or taking a swing at it myself. too many other hobbies at the moment though

That mod would be so nice to be honest! Maybe if I get really into it I’ll pick up some of the mint accessories to at least tinker with it a bit haha - the more hobbies the merrier!

@@willysheepskin that mint flash has been on my short list just to make it more viable indoors. Mine actually came with a few boxes of original disposable flash bulbs. I'd feel guilty using them though, they're too cool. >_>

Any tips on going through security with the film you brought for the Mamiya?

I just send it through the scanners, have never had an issue besides one time where I traveled through like 10 airports with some stuff and even then it wasn’t beyond salvaging. I think the 3200 iso stuff might’ve fogged a bit but I didn’t want to be causing security hold ups on a work trip asking for a hand check so yolo hahaha

Ah me too sometimes Cristian, although they would’ve been super intense in the Maldives it was so hot and humid even with my new short hair standing in the sun all day got to be a bit hot haha

I’ve shot with the sx-70 before whilst I think it’s the best Polaroid camera my problem was always the film firstly the price of it (£20 a pack) but I also found the films dynamic range to be not great. When it worked it looked great but when it didn’t it really didn’t.

Yeah that is quite true hey! I just figure it’s part of the look and appeal of the format though so I let it be what it will be haha, if I want great dynamic range I’ll shoot the thing on my RB otherwise the Polaroid is just a cool way to make some instant memories haha! ( I just wish I could manually input settings lol)

I’m using Polaroids for Polaroid lifts currently. With ‘rustic’ paper and mounted they look good. I also develop and print film. Anyhow, I like your style!
