I prefer using graphite for lighter areas and the charcoal for dark areas because it gets really dark but doesn't have shine :) I hope that helps

Doesn't shading with your finger spread natural oils all over the drawing? Essentially ruining it?

+Christian Regalado yes it does which is why I said in the video that using your finger is not an archival method and can give unpredictable results but I do think it can be useful if you are just practicing a sketch and don't intend to sell it and just need a quick way to blend the pencil without any blending tools 😊 I would use recommend the other methods over using your finger though.

I don't know if this is a thing for artists, but I use this small makeup brush I stole from my mom lol. I use it to brush over the charcoal to keep it from appearing grainy, mostly for the darkest areas for charcoal and graphite. It actually shifts the pencils into the teeth of the paper so it is heavily saturated with black, so that helps me a lot. Have you used a brush? Not a literal brush of course

I like using cheapo dollar store make up brushes for blending They work great for blending and come in a large variety of stiffnesses Firm short or stubby brushes work best for most things but the soft brushes work too for light blending. They work for charcoal and pencil.

+gms9810 thank you and I don't use my finger for archival reasons but I think some people that are just practicing and aren't intending to sell their work and just need to blend something without any tools would find this a beneficial method. Also thank you that is very sweet 😊

Your video was very helpful. I sometimes also use a taklon bristle brush, like one would use with watercolor to blend hair, grass etc.

Kirsty thanks for this experment. In pencil they all look more or less the same except tissue being softer and lighter in charcol they look more or less the same except that tissue maintain the quality of lightness, and finger smothness. while cloth in charcol maintain paper texture. I agree tissue is the most distnict result especially in tone, being lighter. in both charcol and graphite. Of course assuming that the amount of preassure and the medium filling prior to smudging is maintain constant. soft delicate sponge is great for sof transition.. another artist demonstrate it with make up sponge.. forgot the name of it but it is like pencil with little sponge at the end I think for eye area.. i dont have one that is the disadvantage of being a man. ;) One old art professor said that chimoa cloth is the best that work for smudging. the graphite part. Great video By the way I love languages and accents and speak several, what region is your accent in britain? I see you pronouce the letter "h" as "hitch" , thanks for the video.. have a nice day.

:) It does tend to lift a lot of the graphite away, meaning you have to re-apply more often but it gives the smoothest finish IMO. Another great vid, Kirsty.

I never ever ever use any of those techniques to blend or soften edges when working with graphite. When I have tried to use anything at all to blend, it has always damaged the tooth of the paper way to soon. I have learned to go very slowly with my pencils and use a kneaded eraser to soften edges etc. It takes much more time, but the results are always better and that's what counts for me.

finger is not a good choice, because of the oils in your skin. Might try a chamois
@KirstyPartridgeArt

+Pamela Ross yes I agree that if you can avoid using your finger and use one of the other methods then you should. I included it for people that want to practice drawing and don't want to sell their work and don't have any blending tools with them 😊 chamois cloth is a great choice as well!

Jesus loves you so much!!! You are so valueable to God!!! God has a plan for your life!!! Jesus said in John 11:25-26 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?". Jesus said in John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.". "Romans 6:23 from God's Word says "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.". If you want to give your whole life to God then Romans 10:9-10 from God's Word says "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." if you want to give God your life then Confess the Lord Jesus and believe that Jesus died for you and believe that Jesus died for your sins. Believe on God who sent Jesus and rose Jesus from the dead. Ask God to forgive you of all your sins. If you gave God your life then that's awesome!!! Once you have given God your whole life, I strongly encourage you read God's Word daily which is called the "Bible". It is very important you read the Word of God!!! Ask God to give you understanding of His Word. Make sure to put yourself in a Bible believing church that doesn't compromise the Word of God. Make sure the church doesn't teach false things that go against the Bible!
