My current number one pet peeve is when people walk right up to the stream and wade right in. No! Stand back a few feet, watch what is going on, fish the near side first. You’ll be amazed at the results. Or don’t, and leave those fish for me!

Anyone who has studied how fish react to boats, anglers/walkers in general aso will know, that those who don't hide often won't take anything, if spooked at all. Just stay invisible - meaning distance and skills.!

I literally watched a guy do this then waited 30 minutes and fished the near side bank and caught a fish on my 2nd or 3rd cast right where he stepped in. Then he had to watch me from downstream catch 2 more fish. My penis grew 2 inches that day.

The too many false casts is actually a really good point. It was a mistake I was making quite frequently and then when I started fishing for carp I learned the hard way that not only can a lot go wrong with your cast, you're also likely to spook the fish with too many false casts.

Well I’m new to the party and was just wandering thru , as being an avid fly fisherman and being bored , and stuck here in the St Pete fl area close to the bay fishing the flats , ya I know it’s a tough job but some one has to do it , so if I’m not tying ( fliz - flies- fly’s- flyz ) I wander aimlessly seeking knowledge that will improve my saltwater fly fishing score card , your tips and humor seem applicable, I guess I’ll just have to keep watching, screw this I’m going fish’n just finished tying an articulated mullet baitfish pattern to try out ! 👍🏼

I love to see a pretty fish but I will say that number 2 doesn’t bother me. It’s a reminder that yanking a fish out of the water can harm them and makes me think of ways to mitigate this on catch and release. Fish are cool freaking critters and like you say, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard. A pet peeve of mine is when people hold their fish as far out in front of them as they can to make it look bigger in the photo. Like, you ain’t fooling anyone bud unless you have some big ass hands! Love the videos! Keep up the good work!

Now, would this be considered false casting : My second time out west of the Mississippi in the Rockies, I noticed the fish were actively jumping out of the water and feeding on the bugs flying just above the water. The area of the river I was fishing at was mostly shallow riffles, so I started casting a dry fly, but instead of letting it land on the water, I pulled it back just as the fly was a couple inches above the water and cast right back to the same spot to mimic a flying insect. After a few casts, caught a small rainbow that jumped out of the water to grab my fly. That was a one time experiment that I would like to try again next time I go trout fishing to see if that was luck, or if there is any validity to that technique. Definitely cool to watch happen. Also would love to hear if others do that as well.

It's known as "dapping" and was commonly practiced in the Olden Days of Izaak Walton, when tapered horse hair lines were tied to the end of long rods. You fished with the breeze at your back and instead of casting, just held the rod up to let the wind dance the fly and barely "dap" the surface to draw strikes. It was probably the roots of fly fishing, along with fishing the fly wet. I've done it w flyrod and canepole and it works like a charm, especially if you hide behind vegetation on the bank. They were doing tenkara in merry olde England !

I learned decades ago that if I bring a camera or a phone anywhere water, I might as well just chuck it in the drink and go home! I don't take pics of my flies either and I make fun of people with selfie sticks.

I have a better idea regarding fish photography...stop taking pictures! After you land a fish, keep it wet, release it quickly, and thank him/her for the pleasure of the catch. I have to pass along one of my favorite fly fishing quotes, "A trout is a moment of beauty known only to those who seek it." -- Arnold Gingrich
@skylernicholas5429
@skylernicholas5429 2 жыл бұрын
Keep it in the net, get the fly out, and then snap a quick photo I see nothing wrong with that. Dragging it to the bank, laying it in the grass, and then snapping a photo that is the issue. I also think you need to keep and eat a few trout just as a right of passage and paying respect to our ancestors. I practice C&R 99% of the time.

Proper spelling - thank you for pointing that out. I’ve seen flies spelled as flys, but the one that gives me fits is flyes. Fun video - if you catch a fish with a mangled mouth, take pics of both sides and then remind people to do a better job of unhooking.

“Flye” or “flyes” is double bad because it’s also pretentious AF. Flys is actually a word, the plural of a pants zipper. So people misspelling flies are being caught with their flys down…
