If you're anal about dry fly hackle staying nice, recessed split foam is hard to beat. No crushed or deformed hackle and they're cheap

I used to strip and stain/seal old wooden cigar boxes (petite corona sized mostly), line them with foam, and give them away as gifts.

Great presentation on the various types of fly boxes. Right now, I use the larger compartment boxes to store flies, and then choose flies and put them in smaller boxes when I go on trips. I too rely on pucks.

Pucks are convenient until they flip over and dump everything inside into your pack/onto the bank/in the water

I picked up a Plano Tactical Ammo Crate as my boat box. It is fantastic, and they are only like $25 (I got mine on Amazon). It has dividers and Cliff Bugger Barns fits perfectly in it vertically. I have the dividers set so there are 4 compartments in the box; 2 have fly boxes, one has tippet, floatant, tools, etc., and the other has extra sunscreen, gloves, etc. It fits perfectly behind my drift boat's rowers seat and I can easily pull it out for access. It is also just the right size to strap to a kayak or a SUP if you are into that kind of thing. Anyway, it is a great, inexpensive option for a boat box if you are looking for something durable but budget-friendly.

Been fly fishing for over 35 years, and I was that guy who brought every fly (and boxes) on the trip... backpack and all. I spent more time changing out flies, juggling boxes, and carrying unneeded bulk that needed. All I recommend, fly you day box (not plural) and fill it up for the trip not for storage... and enjoy.

5gum cases I use for my smaller trout streamers, and pucks for this that and the other thing, turned a Glock case into a pike/musky box . I have allot of boxes, you’re right I don’t need them all. But I like having more than I’ll ever need. Because I never worry about losing anything .

I made one of my boat boxes from the plastic case a Milwaukee impact driver came in. It’s just like my Cliff box, but it gives me extra cred because it’s red. I stole the case from work so it was a free! I cut 3/4” foam sheets to fit and used gorilla glue. It’s bomber and perfect for my warm water kit

I use Mason jars for storage at home I just write what's in them on the lid but I do go to craft fairs so the box of jars is kinda great for that because I can wheel in 5 boxs of jars a rubber maid with materials, tools and a vice and my bag of fly boxes in one trip

Ben, great discussion; options abound for storage and use at stream/surf side. I use anything but the overly expensive name-brand fly boxes - more than $40 for an empty plastic box, really? I tend to use large plastic parts organizers (Harbor Freight etc.) for bulk storage and anything small and pocket-able for a targeted outing. I prefer a box that lets the flies dry. Organic materials/metals + moisture = bad things happening to my favorite flies.

Hijole! Cerveza Mexicana! My favorite is a little aluminum black box that attaches to a pocket on my vest. It's used to hold used flies. I think it is called a fly trap. I got tired of losing flies off the wool patch.

I use 2 Altoids mint cans electrical taped together. painters tap on the top and bottom , on the inside to side the hooks into. One can peppermint the other another flavor ,that my separation of floats and sinks. 12 flys in each can. so that's 24 flys in the set up. An it fits in your pocket

just hit a year into my own fly fishing adventures and it took a few different types of boxes till i landed on a few that work for me. My only problem is i want to take to many different types (mostly nymphs) out when i go fishing only to use the same 4-10 different ones over and over.

Altoids box with a tiemco magnet. Dropped an antique Wheatley. Sunk and rolled away. Started buying the foam ones with magnets. Wrote name and address with a sharpy inside. Got two back, one I didn't even know I lost. Made me work to improve my tying, what with strangers looking at my flies.

I love that you mentioned the 3m electrical tap puck container for flies. I have totally used one. Pucks fit better in your pocket and you can probably hand a puck from your pocket easier to your clients than getting into your boat bag. I currently don’t use any pucks.

I have an old Orvis fly wallet from way back when I started fly fishing. It came with an eight fly selection of weighted nymphs and was among the first sets of flies I owned. It’s pretty beat up now and I’m probably going to replace it with a new box in the near future, but I’ll probably still hang on to it for old times sake.

Labeled Altoid boxes with disc magnets glued to the outside. They stick to anything metal and you can attach your wet flies to the outside magnet so they can dry before you put them back inside. In addition, the flies on the inside don't fall out when you open the box and you can move them around with just one finger, no need to unhook them from foam. Easy peazy, lemon squeezy. Finally, your breath will always smell "minty" fresh.
