At Oshkosh, back in 2021, I saw this plane and I was really interested in the design as it was similar to my Extra. It had many unique features, such as a full baggage compartment and a cruising speed of 200 kts. Thereafter, I had subscribed to The GameBird Composite Instagram ( gamecomposites?...) and was impressed with their videos of the flight performance and capabilities. For these reasons, I have decided to visit Gamebird Composite for a tour and demo flight.
Their slogan is "Fly Without Compromise", which came about by founding members, Stuart Walton and Philipp Steinbach. "The idea of the team of the Game Composites was to invent a combination of aerobatic and general aviation airplane." They started their story in 2013 and in 6 focused years, a small team of dedicated people was able to translate an idea into a beautiful and capable aircraft that "enables you to fly without compromise". gamecomposites.com

I Spoke to Philipp at Sun and Fun. It was one the most enjoyable and informative times I have spent in my many years of attending S&F. He is a gracious and humble guy who took the time to talk to us "nobodies" (my words) a real aviation renaissance man. He answered all our technical questions including his personal backround and explained many design details of this incredible aircraft. I cant say enough about how overjoyed that I was to meet this young man who started with nothing but a high IQ (my words again) and passion for aircraft , without a lot of structured higher education, and became a world class aerobatic pilot, designer of a world class innovative aerobatic aircraft, headed up the FAA and European certification in record time, brought a manufacturing facility up from the ground, produces airplanes, sells, demonstrates, and manages to be a husband and father at the same time. His story and the story of GameBird would make a great book. I literally took flight lesson from Philipp himself in GB1 which literally opened my eyes to a whole new world. Philipp is really cool guy but that does not change the fact GB1, based on XtremeAir XA42, is an extreme aircraft that is much more difficult to fly than Extra or Pitts with its extreme pitch sensitivity and high landing speed (90kt+ required in final vs 75kt of an Extra). The highly leaned back (not adjustable) seat backrest is entirely optimized for G tolerance, not everyday comfort and hard to get used to. A weakness of GB1 is that it uses the very light duty Lang tailwheel whose tire is only half as wide of those found in Extra or Su26/29, and I personally know two GB1 owners who lost tailwheel tire when rolling out after landing. It therefore demands wheel landing to reduce tailwheel wear which makes the landing even more difficult. Also there is always concerns of safety given the in-flight breakup of similar full CFRP airplanes like MX and Giles.

Certainly, aerobatic monoplanes are all very different from the rest of airplanes and share many characteristics. But did it feel the same as a regular Extra 300L or an Extra 330SC? I ended up buying a used Extra 200 after training for about 20h in GB1 and they were not satisfied with me. I mastered landing of my Extra 200 after just a few go arounds (without any instructors) and now flies it every week. Obviously GB1 has more performance and I miss that, and I do feel a little pissed off that they raised its price from $400k to $600k+ just the last 2 years.

Отличная идея - показывать субтитры чуть ранее фразы на английском. Прочитав по- русски, потом лучше запоминаются фразы на английском👍

In my personal opinion, all pilots must take at least a few aerobatic lessons and real stall/spin recovery and UPRT. It will make them much safer.

The main answer is - price. If Extra cheaper (now NG model is cheaper than GB1) - than Extra. If GB1 was cheaper 50-100K - GB1.

Companies that try to control ALL of the service of their products by using proprietary hardware where jellybean parts would work just as well absolutely baffle me. Trapping customers into service instead of selling a quality product is such a bottom tier move. Really appreciate the use of standard parts.
