*Important Note!* Much confusion in the comments regarding "brake-by-wire." The system shown is absolutely "brake-by-wire." Lots of comments suggesting this is electrically assisted brakes, or something other than brake-by-wire, which are inaccurate claims. I asked Brembo about the system, and here was their response: "In normal use, the pedal is engaging a master cylinder, but the system runs in “open loop” so the master cylinder doesn’t generate any pressure. Normally the system takes pedal travel data and outputs a pressure using the electric pump based on the calibration done by GM and Bosch. In the unlikely event of a failure in the electrical hydraulic pump, or the entire vehicle electrical system, the master cylinder then becomes the operational fail safe to generate pressure and make braking still possible." In other words, this is a brake-by-wire system, with a hydraulic failsafe in the unlikely event of electronic failure.

As a retired engineer, I love seeing someone who knows what they are talking about explaining these engineering details to people. Jason, you are easy to understand and doing a great job in all you videos. Thumbs up to Chevrolet for helping you out in doing this; the C8 is the Corvette we always knew the Chevy engineers could produce if management just let them do their best.

That chassis is a work of art. I see no way Chevrolet isn't losing money on these cars, especially when you factor in the YEARS of rigorous R&D this platform went through. It's hard to believe this came from the same company that makes the Chevy Trax.

Jason, you know you've hit the big time when you can email Chevy directly and they do what you asked. Big props, man :)

Pushrod engines are great. Simple, compact, inexpensive, and with the right valvetrain you can still rev them pretty high. Since it is old tech, you also have loads of modification options, as well, and with only the one camshaft it's much less expensive to go from a street-oriented setup to something more racey. And of course you have all of those options for pretty valve covers! Cammers are great, but for performance achievable for mere mortals, pushrods are here to stay

The longevity/reliability/durability of GM's LS/LT engines is arguably top of class. Very common to last hundreds of thousands of miles. See the 770k mile C5 turned into the National Corvette Museum as just one example (and many more on CorvetteForum have reported super high miles).

Old saying; Understeer gets you around the track slightly slower. Oversteer gets you off the track much quicker.

Excellent way to explain that sometimes engineers do things for logical reasons. Sometimes your "common sense" way of thinking you inherited from your grandpa doesn't explain everything. Also sometimes we don't fully understand the reasons behind things. I still can't believe you got Chevy to loan you the cutaway C8, Keep up the great work!

Great info! I have almost 10k miles on my C8 and i think you hit many valid points.

This reminds me of the famous quote by Mario Andretti: "It is amazing how may drivers, even at the Formula One Level, think that the brakes are for slowing the car down." Brakes can do so much more. They mitigate traction and change weight distribution beyond simply slowing the car's speed. . And for a very simple example of how they can make a car faster, just think of it like this. Let's say you have two identical cars, one with powerful brakes, and the other with anemic brakes. If you're on a straight side-by-side coming into a turn, the car with better brakes can brake LATER and decelerate FASTER resulting in the same entry angle and speed into the turn, but getting there FASTER than the car with worse brakes. For the majority of people who have never seriously tried to learn about racing, this is not intuitive at all. . It's the same with the C8's understeer. It's only slight understeer to begin with. And normally, with certain driving techniques, you can mitigate understeer anyway through use of timed braking and acceleration. However, Chevy already put in the adjustability (as you said) that can push that understeer into neutral / oversteer range. So really, the understeer isn't even a bug. It's a feature... and one that can be disabled!!!

After years of tuning my highly modified Lotus Elise for Autox duty, I've found that a little bit of understeer is necessary if you're looking to turn the fastest times. Reason: getting on the gas as early as possible on corner exit is how you reduce lap times. A touch of manageable understeer is well worth early throttle application. This bias also allows for deeper trail braking. Combined, these create longer straights on any course. IME, YMMV, yada yada

That's so cool that the stingray comes with a dry sump setup. Is it a wet/dry like the C6 Z06 where it has a wet sump with pickup and just uses a scavange pump to cycle oil through the tank? Or is it a proper dry sump with the dry sump pump feeding pressure or atleast directly feeding the oil pump port?

OK, so Michelin makes a really good all season tire but if I can afford a new Corvette I can also afford a junker to drive in the winter. I can't imagine taking a new Corvette out in the snow.

Would love for you to do an episode on the chassis using that cut-away model, I was salivating looking at all the aluminum extrusions, castings, sheetmetal, etc. Would love to understand how and why the engineering team made the decisions it did. From the short glimpses, it looks super stout and the triangulation for holding the suspension hard points looks so robust! And the castings! PLEASE do a review on the chassis?!

I don't have much experience regularly driving a high performance rear-wheel drive monster machine of any sort on snow so I can't speak on it, but what has always puzzled me is when people go bonkers when you drive all-season tires all year around. Mind you, I live in Chicago, so I'm no novice when it comes to legit snowy driving. But I've owned 3 cars in my life and all 3 did perfectly fine on all season tires in both snowy and dry pavement when simply driving it from point a-b. The car I have now is pretty powerful but its AWD and I know not to throw it into a corner in the snow anyway, but it does an amazing job in the snow, barely any wheel slip at half throttle from a stand-still and I've yet to go for a slide while trying to take a turn at a reasonable speed. Basically all I'm saying is what's the big deal with people harping over winter tires when all-seasons do the job just fine? Unless you're about to go rally-cross racing I don't see the big deal. And don't let me get started on tire chains!

"More low end torque", now he gets the advantages of 2 valve. 2 valve engines usually have a higher port velocity, so make max torque at a lower rpm. Plus this is a modern pushrod engine, so it has lightened valve-train that can do higher rpm than old pushrod stuff.

I love the all season tires on my mid-engine car. Also, I fixed the under-steer by going with a 30mm wider tire.

I'd love to see details on the structure, it looks very impressive. I also think it's super rad that they added that adjustability to the suspension to set it up for track use as well as a suggestion on a good setup.

The C8 is a performance bargain PLATFORM i.e. you can make adjustments and modificatons relatively easily. The GM designers are not fools; they've produced a totally accessible vehicle with an effective low tech, modest maintenance engine. My prediction is that after a few gremlins have been sorted, it will provide lots of automotive fun, new and used, for quite a few years to come.

Yet another great job. Real engineering content, clearly explained, no B.S. Back around 2000 I had a Porsche Turbo that I drove at some track days at Laguna Seca. (Lifelong dream fulfilled!) - anyway - I went with 2 year old brake fluid and managed to boil it -- that is a sinking feeling to be sure! (Lesson learned!) The Corvette system is brilliant in that regard - great job of explaining it!

I daily drive a Camaro and the best thing I did was replace my P Zeros with a set of good all seasons. My pants now stay clean at the hint of bad weather.

I like that manufactures always try to push the edge of technology, but it feels like every time a new technology comes out it fails miserably and then takes 3-5 years to fix and then gets scrapped the following year and then they start over again.

First thing we change is the MOBILE 1 to a better oil. It's fine for DD, but if you plan on any kind of motorsport, change to a good oil right away.

CLIFFNOTES: The car was made softer and more live-able than the previous corvette, yet the platform is adjustable by the purist quite easily by making easy adjustments to settings the car has built in... ...resulting in a much better car than the previous one, if you want that... but expect tradeoffs like the tires to wear out fast like the previous car. The engine is completely fine if it makes the power needed and fits as compact and light, as it clearly does. If you want better tires, get them, but these are about 95% the grip of the non all-season tires in the dry. Google them.

I used to ignor these Chevy's as a bit of joke frankly, I take it back, its hell of a car for the money, congrats from the U.K. well done chaps

Had "FUN" driving my dads corvette home in February in Alaska with formula 1 summer tires, a drive that normally takes 2 hours took nearly 4 hours, got to the house and car was sliding sideways down the driveway.

Next time just ask them: Can I keep the grey Corvette in my garage? 😅👍

You have to remember that Corvette engineers have to make sure ye olde corvette driver doesn't kill himself.... Understeer, Brake-by-wire and All-Season Tires is a part of the safety features.

It technically isn't "Brake by Wire" since there is still a mechanical connection between the brake pedal and master cylinder. This is basically computer controlled electric power assisted brakes.

This is the most informed review I've heard about the c8 especially regarding the understeer complaints of other reviews.

Let me comment upon this great video. I really liked this presentation. Blessed to obtain a C8 on April 13, 2020, I enjoy driving the C8 each and every time I get behind the wheel of the car. Thus far, there hasn't been much in the way of maintenance. The car is super comfortable. It handles amazingly well. It maintains its track on the road regardless of grooves and things that get thrown at it and I chalk that up to the magnetic ride control. When ever I put the G forces to the tires when cornering, the car hugs the corners and makes me feel like there is almost no lean. While horsepower and torque are not instantaneous, they are completely predictable until the RPM's find the last 1500 RPM on the tack. That's where the car accelerates its hardest and does not disappoint. Instead, it scares the absolute stuffings out of me. Suddenly, at those moments, I mentally cancel any thoughts of needing or wanting a Z06. Every detail of the track booklet that comes with the car should be taken care of before going to the track, including the break-in period and removing the front license plate and restoring the front aero part to its original position for the track use. It's all amazing! AF
