The Koenigsegg Gemera Has The World's Most Powerful 3-Cylinder Engine

The Koenigsegg Gemera is an incredibly complex vehicle. At the rear wheels are two electric motors, each rated for 500 horsepower and 1000 newton meters of torque, and they each have a single-speed gearbox before sending power to the rear wheels independently.
Sandwiched between the motors is the Tiny Friendly Giant or TFG, a 3-cylinder longitudinally placed engine. It's good for 600 horsepower and 600 newton meters of torque, and mounted to the end of its crankshaft is another electric motor, good for an additional 400 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.
Total system output is about 1700 horsepower, as the battery has limits to how much power it can supply, and motors and engines make peak power at different times.
The engine and third motor actually send power to the front wheels exclusively, so this is Koenigsegg’s first AWD model. Power is sent through a carbon fiber torque tube, then passes through a torque converter, then through a simple ring and pinion to split power between the front wheels. On each side of the ring and pinion are wet multi-plate clutches, so either front axle can be completely locked up or detached, allowing for torque vectoring.
With independent rear motors, the rear also has torque vectoring, and each motor also has a wet clutch to detach completely, meaning for highway cruising it can operate as FWD only for optimal efficiency. All wheel drive. All wheel steering. All wheel torque vectoring. Powering all of the electric motors is a 16.6 kWh, 800V battery pack. The pack is good for 50 kilometers or 31 miles of electric only range, and can be charged using the engine, or through regenerative braking. Total combined range is 1000 kilometers, or about 620 miles. Enjoy the video for the full details of this very cool engine!

This video will always be close to my heart. I remember I did a project in my Engineering days about VVT, VVD and VVL in a single system using pneumatic and electromagnetic actuators 8 years back. My professor degraded that project proposal saying it's practically non-feasible and this won't happen in a production car for at least next 20 years. YEah but. F1 engines dont reach the 15000 RPM. Max 13500 RPM. That is beacuse flow rules witch are at const maximum when u go over 10500 RPM. So effective m/s in that case is lower// Calculated 23,85 m/s So very impressive. State of the art tech indeed. F1 are efficiency driven by rulebook and manufacturers will not go to max RPM beacuse that is wasted energy for to much material wear and less MPGs.

I was on track to be a finance major from HS and at the end of my jr year I decided I wanted to be a mechanical engineer after watching your videos and other you tubers explaining how car engines work, and plane engines. I am now finishing up my sophomore year at NJIT and so far I am loving it but that article would have been a great recourse, I still learned all those things from the article but it would have been nice to get a heads up. I still watch your videos because I live seeing the big ideas that go into a project. Thank You for being an inspiration!

The freevalve tech is something I had been thinking about FOR MANY YEARS using solenoids, as stated the ability to vary the lift and duration was one large issue, however I was also interested in the lack of a hard connection for controlling float due to the inertia of a given mass - I had also considered some type of variable intake tract in which there was an ability to control it's volume, the ability to control intake tract flow and keep port velocities high no matter the engine speed would increase the VE and maximize scavenging.

Cam profiles are never direct inputs, that I've seen, instead tuning plays with fuel injection based on O2 results in emissions vs. based on input parameters of knowing exactly what the given volume of air is based on controlled valve position, boost and known lag times for changes to valve position.
