Ornek is a traditional ornament of the Crimean Tatars, an indigenous people of Ukraine. A living heritage that has passed through the centuries and preserved to this day the uniqueness and deep meaning embodied in decorative and applied art. Ornek reached its peak during the Crimean Khanate from the second half of the 15th to the end of the 18th century. Luxurious palaces, mosques, national clothes, accessories, jewelry and household items - everything was decorated with exquisite ornaments with deep meaning. These patterns symbolically told about the value of family, harmony in relationships, the importance of procreation and respect for elders.
Ornek consists of various elements of plant and geometric ornaments built into a system of signs. The first, vegetable, is typical for embroidery, stone carving, jewelry art. The second, in which geometric motifs predominate, is in weaving and carpet making. A whole story or wish can be conveyed in a peculiar language of visual symbols. Knowledge of the meaning of every detail and the ability to "read" them is a living phenomenon of Crimean Tatar culture.
