This Jazz Solo Lesson is for you if all the lines in your solos are just a sequence of "now I am playing an arpeggio" then "a bit of scale". That is of course not that exciting to listen to. There is more to jazz lines and jazz melodies than just trying to put arpeggios and scales next to each other.
In this video, I am going to show you some of the ways that you can make more interesting melodies in your solos. It is all about surprising to the listener without just being weird and hard to understand.
In hindsight, this is a lesson I really wish I had when I was starting to learn Jazz and wanted to play better lines in my solos.

GREAT lesson Jens! I’ve gotten back into playing my mandolin after a long break. I’ve been working on your ii-V-I lesson with arpeggios and using the diatonic scale for now applying it to my mandolin, and have Autumn Leaves as my first crack at soloing. I’ve been having so much fun sitting and making music! I am also picking out some solos for Autumn Leaves on records by ear and working on incorporating those ideas as well. Love George Benson’s playing - especially his stuff with Jack McDuff!

a book called "how to sound like jazz even if you are not" would be great. of course the title stinks a bit but the step from "knowing the scales, chords and arpeggios" to "make lines that are music" could be an interesting task for a teacher. the diea is not new of course but a collection of tricks and bits incl. serious theoretical analysis and ways and examples to really use this techniques... i would buy it and review it with all the stars. just dreaming...

Great lesson Jens. I have one final question about your jazz tone. There seems to be a widespread assumption that flat wound strings are the way to go. But I’ve also heard that apart from swing jazz, it’s better to use round wound strings, e.g. by Thomastik. Forgive me if you’ve covered this before, but what are your string preferences? Thank you.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 жыл бұрын
For me it depends on the guitar, my semi-hollows have round wounds and I prefer that a little above the flats for them. There is a link to the Sonotone strings that I use in the video description :)

Excellent work as always. Your work really help me and I'm so thankful for that brother. I want to ask a question. Why most fusion guitar players running up and down the fretboard against most classic jazz players that are playing in specific positions? I'm asking that because I'm trying to visualise both scales and arpeggios and also a way to practice them and feel free to play anywhere in the fretboard. I can't really get the difference between "fusion" and "jazz" playing on the fretboard.

It is not scales or arpeggios, it is both, which is exactly what I go over in this lesson? If you can't play you arpeggios then your scales are useless, if you can play your scales then your arpeggios are useless...
