This is a great lesson, I've struggled with creating interesting jazz lines (metal guitarist, we're a little dense ;)) Chromatic enclosure, sweet :) Awesome channel, my go to source for Jazz lessons...Keep it up, love it!

I am now studying jazz at a conservatory, I have weird tendencies harmonically speaking and my improvisation is lacking that "Jazz feel". These videos are helping a lot, every time I watch one I end up stealing at least one lick, Thanks!!!

This video just gave me a huge lift toward jazz guitar improvisation. I've been working on chord melodies and theory but I didn't seem to be getting very far, very fast. Thank you so much, Jens. I now hear jazz phrasing in my head and I'm able to come up with my own lines. As I mentioned, I'm also working on basic theory and chord theory. I've been able to come up with my own chord melody versions of Lil Darlin and Cute after learning my jazz chords. I am making progress. I just needed a little jazz phrasing nudge to get me over the hump. Today was an "Aha" moment for me. Now I feel like I'm getting somewhere. Yippee!!

I don't have a favorite lick as such, but I listen closely to what musicians choose to repeat or how they create space with pauses. As much as I love beautiful bebop runs (and work on mine) often it's the repeats or rests which give me real moments to enjoy.

I really like this method! It also demonstrates how you can actually use all 12 notes over pretty much any given chord, and not obsess over “chord scales” also really like how your examples are delaying the resolutions past the downbeat!

Great lesson. Classic Bird line that Benson uses with the downward progression from the B - I have a variation, also something I've seen in Bird transcriptions(in 8th notes): B-C-A-Ab-G-Gb-F-D-E-D-C-B(tied 8th note from C-B). This gives you a bebop major with A-Ab-G and a bebop 7 with G-Gb-F(implied ii-V). Enclosures are so important - typically wrapping around the 3rd but other target notes as well. Adding triplets is Huge - that's one of the things Barry Harris always talks about. On a Major 7, is the 7th your favorite landing spot? These are Excellent videos not only for guitarists, but for horns and keyboards as well!

Yes, I have heard many times that all of the answers are in the Omni Book and in fact, I'm currently working on Billie's Bounce and Bird's first chorus of solo and trying to play in G, C, F, Bb and Eb. That, of course, requires a lot of time and a great deal of experimentation with different fingerings. That's a ton of work for just 24 bars of music. You have boiled a lot jazz language down for your peeps in this video. Thanks, again.

Hi @jens, you probably know that some of the tabs don't match your actual fingerings. The surprising positive side effect is that this is helping me to 1) pay more attention to the different fingering possibilities and 2) refer to the staff notes more, which is good because I'm lazy. :-D

I have a manuscript of a Bebop Improvisation book my father authored but never released. The first 20 pages are almost everything one needs to know about pre -solo Miles jazz theory, focusing on the 7th scale. Perhaps I'll release it on of these days. Did I mention that he grew up in Detroit, Michigan.

For the enclosures. I think I see a pattern of using the major 7th and the major second for enclosures on the Root "C" then I'm seeing Major 7th and a minor second used on the "E'" which would diatonically be the Phrygian of the C major scale?
