The araceae/aroid is arguably the most popular plant family in the world for the past decade. In this episode, we define what an aroid is, how they are classified, as well as some interesting facts about this amazing plant family that comprises of so many genus we have come to love. There are some surprising twists and turns that will leave your jaws dropping, and your mouth water (Yes, some aroids are very tasty…)
We also discuss a famous aroid genus, the amorphophallus that I bet you didn’t know is in the arum family.
At the end of the episode, I add a bonus content where I ranked the top 10 aroid genus in the houseplant market, in the order of the least to most popular in cultivation.
Genus discussed include:
Aglaonema
Alocasia
Anthurium
Amydrium
Caladium
Colocasia
Cyrtosperma
Dieffenbachia
Epipremnum
Homalomena
Monstera
Philodendron
Rhaphidophora
Thaumatophyllym
Schismatoglottis
Scindapsus
Spathiphyllum
Syngonium
Zamioculcas

My favourite formats that you do are as follows (but not in any hierarchical order): 1) You at home just rambling, talking to yourself/us and arranging/repotting/general plant care/ etc. 2) You touring nurseries/shops/shows/botanical gardens/etc. 3) Your plant travel videos (Bali was awesome!, etc.). Personally I really like when you are outdoors somewhere and showing us stuff, but I also love your at home vids. I watched your plant styling videos when you first moved into your new house like several times. As long as you are showing us plants and/or doing things with plants, and chatting about it I am happy. : )

I love this format, that has some kind of ordering. A light dose of taxonomy of would be great addition. Plant identity is also useful. Araceae : The smallest of all flowers is that of duckweed in araceae and the largest "flower" is titanarum. Some palms produce an enormous flowering structure. Rafflesia has the largest true flower.

hi Sean, the distribution of araceae genera across the two "worlds" is pretty cool basically two genera, lysichiton and symplocarpus, are closely related and westerners call them "skunk cabbage" because they are smelly lmao. they both stretch across that little bit of the north from china/japan, off the map and back into canada/usa another few -- wolffia, wolffiella, spirodela, lemna and pistia -- are basically all different kinds of tiny duckweed that float in ponds homalomena also stretches across both "worlds", but mostly biased towards asean with just a few species in south america the most interesting one is arisaema, which has q a lot of species and is scattered across the world. some people think that it may actually be a few genera, but for now all of them are in one genus. arisaema are pretty cool because their flowers look like a cobra head and also while the plants are dioecious (have m and f flowers on separate plants), the entire plant changes sex a bunch of times through its life

This format is excellent. It's good that you painted the big picture in broad strokes, so we can now place interesting plants into this helpful hierarchy. I guess it also helps us assimilate cultural information into Genera, rather than be overwhelmed with tons of unrelated cultural tips for species upon species.

I love this format Sean. It had a good layout and was very easy to follow. I personally learned a few things. Seeing as how studying Botany is a hobby of mine I appreciate anything I can learn and use to further my understanding and the care of the plants I own or would like to purchase. Would love if you could break this down even further and separate the groups into sections and talk about care, growing requirements, fair prices( realize this differs greatly by location). Thank you for taking the time to do these presentations for us.💚🌱🌵🍃🌿🪴

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I was in the interior plantscaping business here in New Jersey about 30 years ago. At that time we never heard the word Aroid. We had 2 types of aglaonema, 2 types of pothos, and 1 philodendron! Our mainstays were the many types of dracaena, and 1 or 2 spathyphylums, and aglaonema. Although I have not jumped on the rare plant bandwagon, I am thrilled to see all the new varieties. I will probably eventually pick up a few.

Sean, this was a very interesting video. You certainly did your homework! The bonus content was the most interesting, and I think could've been its own video. I'd love to see you do a two-part video series (if you have the interest), where you examine what makes so-called easy care plants, actually "easy". And conversely, what make the hard to care for/advanced plants difficult to keep alive, and make thrive! Oh, and to answer your question... yes, I think you should make more videos like this (and others too, like I mentioned above). I got a bit disinterested and unplugged for a while with the multiple garden videos, and plant shows. I like the greenhouse tours every now and again, but not as mainstay content. If it's going to be a tour, I prefer actual plant shops even more than the large garden tours. In any case, you're doing a great job. I know the move was stressful and you probably had to take some time to regroup after that, and all the construction (getting sick too). Best wishes!💚

I always get so surprised by what are aroids. I’ve always been afraid of anthurium-I killed a flamingo flower once and have since been scared to try again haha. But now that I know they’re aroids, I’m not as scared. Agleonemas are aroids?! You don’t say. I’ve always preferred Raphidophora to monstera. I LOVE taro. It’s soooooo yummy. The ones from Hawaii are my favorite. I just love it it plain, boiled and baked. But I love me some poi, boba tea, and pastries. This was a fantastic video, love this format! That was fun! I think where I live the Epipremnum would rate #1. They are easy for people who want plants but are really not plant people. They use them more decoratively than for the love of a genus and place them in low light spots in their homes. You sound much better today!!!

Great video as usual. I appreciated your highlight of epipremnum pinnatum. I, as a Singaporean, try to encourage my friends to get this plant instead of monstera deliciosa, because ep is a plant that's native to Singapore and won't cause problems if it accidentally escapes into the wild. Also I find that variegated ep holds the variegation better than variegated md, and is less likely to revert to green. Also it's chinese name is "dragon tail", and like, come on 🤷
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
Yess Ive always pushed for the epipremnum. Especially during the monstera craze when their prices inflated like crazy. In one of my videos I even showed the epi and monstera mature form side by side. Epipremnum pinnatum is very underrated and under represented
