I started serious (sort of) exercise at 69. I'm 82 now and only walk (occasionally) and have recently started using my kettlebells every day. That seems to work better for me than the usually recommended every other day. Of course, my kbs are only 20#, 12 kg, and 16 kg. All I do are swings, and maybe a deadlift or so every once in a while, but they maintain my muscle mass and keep me moving and healthy.

In the new year I decided to do all of my KB's, as doubles; and as Olympic Lift Trainers: 1. Clean-Press 2. Clean-Squat 3. Overhead Press 4. Snatch-Cleans The goal is to add Thrusters, SOTS, and windmills in the near future. At 52, after decades being a powerlifter and ex-football OL, the KB's have been an absolute God send. Strength and stamina have never been better. Old injuries are magically and systematically being healed or at least improved. I don't ever see myself going back to bar work.

Great video as always. I am over 60 and I use kettlebells regularly, and these exercises are just fundamental. I tend to prefer the clean and jerk, sometimes adding squat or even double clean+reverse lunges+ squat & press. I change structures of workouts often and I try to add pull ups. Snatches hard style very taxing on your heart and lungs. Thanks for new ideas on structures, so we do not get bored.

This video underlines what I love most about kettlebell training - simple, space-efficient, no faffing around changing weight plates, and functional compound moves that feel more realistic simulation of real-world movements. Appreciate your straightforward communication style and workout plan, too. Have been mostly doing static strength moves with my KBs for the past year or two, plus goblet squats and two-handed swings - nervous about potential for shoulder injuries (I had a nasty impingement a few years back) if I try to transition too quickly to these fully dynamic movements, so any guidance on the most effective pathway also greatly appreciated. Thanks for all you do!

Ive been doing the double kettlebell front squat lately. Something about it is brutally hard. Feels like I'm working so much with that exercise. I can front squat 70kg on the bar easy, two 32kg kettlebells somehow feels like twice the effort.

Nice video. Good, straight forward explanation. unpretentious. I will give it a try. What I miss, in your tutorial, to mention, where do I feel the exercise. which muscle does it target. Like:" If you do it right you feel it here" Maybe I´m doing it wrong, And I don't want to get into the habit of a wrong execution . Or maybe it's just not necessary or impossible with the kettlebell.

Most of these exercises, including the one-handed swing, would totally f**k up the rotator cuff shoulder joints of older people. I am 65 and I use kettlebells for two-handed (normal) swings, goblet squats, overhead press, etc that do not involve a jerking movement (like the snatch and clean& jerk) or sudden on/off changes in muscle loads.

Hi Gregory, I am reaching out to seek your guidance in achieving my goal. Although I'm not quite 40 yet (I'm 37), I feel it's close enough. I aspire to use 2x32kg kettlebells as my working weight for Clean&Jerks. For the past two years, I've been intensively training with kettlebells and have finally reached a point where I can clean and press (C&P) a 32kg kettlebell 7-8 times. Throughout my training, I've admittedly neglected Jerks, and I need to improve in this area. I haven't yet performed a Repetition Maximum (RM) for C&J with the 32kg, but I believe I will also be able to jerk it around 5 times. Two weeks ago, I finally started double kettlebell training using 2x24kg kettlebells. The double presses are relatively easy, but I feel the double jerks are more challenging. I think it's primarily because I haven't really learned to generate a lot of power with my legs yet. So, my question is: What is the quickest way to achieve my goal of being able to jerk 2x32kg? Should I continue training with 2x24kg to improve my technique, or should I jerk 1x32kg more often to get better accustomed to the higher weight and eventually be able to C&J 2x32kg? Thank you in advance for your advice. KOW
@lebestark-official
@lebestark-official Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing brother! The quickest way to get better at the Jerk is to improve your technique with lighter weights. Keep pressing with your working weight so you don’t use your upper body strength. Just dedicate a couple of minutes of your training to skill practice. - Gregory

Great video and I always enjoy what you do, especially for people who are interested in kettlebells. But the over 40 things always feels a bit weird to me. And somehow I see it in a lot of places in society that when you are over 35 or 40 you are "old". You see it in art, and and sports, whatever. I just turned 40 last October and still pulling lifetime PR's despite I am not competing in Olympic Weightlifting anymore. Whatever you want to achieve don't let anyone tell you there is a limit... Or that over 35 or 40 is too old to start, to apply for something, or that you need "special" things... Just go for it.
@lebestark-official
@lebestark-official Жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly Cristian. As a man over 40, you're aware of how of a limited asset time can become. That's exactly why this workout fits well for our gang. Not saying in the slightest, that younger folks cannot do this workout OR that being over 40 means it's downhill from there. Quite the contrary, my brother. Thanks for sharing! - Gregory

I got back into kettlebells at the start of Lent and upgraded from 16kg to 24kg for training. Since I started using the 24kg, I'm able to hit consistent activity for the time duration, but my body needs more than a quick break between exercises (≈:30). Should I keep it up with the 24kg and have my body get acclimated to the cardio, or go down to 16kg to reduce strain but hit the pace? I've been doing KBs 3x/wk and alternating plyo and P90x yoga in between KB days. My body has been feeling good with the higher weight. I appreciate the programming and attention to form.

It is a skill and it can take a while to master, You have to tame the swing arc and switch your grip inserting the hand through. If and when done right the bells glide and fold nicely on to your arm as they rest across your chest. You also have to do the same on the snatch almost puching through the bell at the top I find.

Sorry, but that´s more a military press than a normal press where you use your whole body to make it go up and flex with it when it comes down. Also, I was taught to bend my legs more with a swing, I think your legs don´t bend, all coming from the hips. Further, a very nice video, thanks for the effort!

Using your legs to drive the kettlebell overhead is a Push Press or Jerk to be technically correct.

The message I took from the video is that the workout is quick, efficient and highly suited to people that have limited time...like the over 40s. You might suffer a lot being on KZfaq if you don't like clickbait 🤷‍♂️

I'm starting to feel like "workouts for people over 40" shouldn't be a thing; I train as hard as/harder than my athletes who are half my age. It should be changed to 'Beginner workouts', that would make more sense in my opinion.

There is a reason for workouts to be geared towards over 40s - and it has nothing to do with intensity but with time management. Workouts need to be as effective, short and most bang for your buck. It all boils down to having less time available while the demands and responsibilities of life keep growing. That‘s exactly what the kettlebell - and these exercises in particular - do. 🧨

@@lebestark-official Sure, I can understand that, but as an over-40 something it just irks me to see videos titled like this, especially when they really have nothing to do with being over 40. In fact, a lot of people who are younger than 40 (with families, careers, travelers, etc.) also have limited time and would benefit from the types of workouts you prescribe. Please note, I understand that this is a me problem and I'm just having a moment - thank you for taking the time to engage with my hissy-fit. You can obviously title your videos whatever you'd like; as a middle-aged "athlete" though, these kinds of titles (and I've seen them often from multiple fit pros) can feel assumptive, as if we're a monolith. Also, I appreciate your content. Keep doing what you do!

Should have separate program for men over 75. Over 40 is too broad for older gents. The ballistic forces generated with some of your suggested exercises could injure older men. Swinging the kettle up over head then roller coastering it between the legs is cringe worthy for the shoulders & back
