Key 3: Study success stories. Studying the lives of other successful people, whether by reading their biographies, interviews and articles, or by attending lectures and events can be an important step in your own journey.
If you are an artist, listen to the music, attend the concerts, and watch and read interviews with highly successful Gospel artists and worship leaders. Take note of what has worked for them and why. Rather than to imitate their careers, you should work to glean principles and lessons from their success and apply what you can to your own development.
If you’re an industry person, like me, make it a regular habit to read and watch interviews with successful executives as well as creative people. You’d be amazed at how many concepts and practices you can acquire. You will broaden your perspective and deepen your understanding.
Key 4: Learn from the failures of others.
If we can find assistance in the success of others we can gain even more insight from their failures. I believe one of the reasons the bible does not hide the mistakes and sins of godly men and women is because God wants to give us tools to avoid pitfalls. While we will never live without error, it is certainly a blessing to know what NOT to do and why.
We should never look for or rejoice in the failures of others, but whenever people are released to share the testimonies of their shortcomings, it is important to be compassionate students.
Key 5: Find a mentor. Many of the greatest lessons and opportunities I have gained throughout my career have come from my relationships with mentors. Although I have never formally asked for a mentorship relationship with anyone, I have always tried to sit quietly in the presence of men and women of influence. The more respectful and responsible I was in my conversations with them, the more often I found myself invited to sit and listen….and eventually to talk.
It helps to grow relationships with people who are doing what we aspire to do. It is equally helpful to develop relationships with people in other areas of leadership who are simply great examples of moral and Christian character. We are truly shaped by the company we keep.
A word of caution about this final key: Please avoid the urge to force yourself on people of influence. Be prayerful about what relationships to seek and be gracious as you walk through the doors of relationship God opens for you.
