LISTEN ! I totally agree about Cap by Brubaker. When I first read that run, I was BLOWN AWAY, how it didn’t feel like a comic book. It felt so real. Love your list bro.

Very well said my friend! I definitely feel similarly reading that epic run. Plus I love Winter Soldier

For me, it was Ed Brubaker, who brought me back to the comics. I read first his amazing Daredevil run, and after that his Captain America run. Another eye opener was Jason Aaron with his Thor run (partly because of the art of Esad Ribic). Especially the God-Butcher saga. B.M. Bendis' Alias: Jessica Jones was something I didn't expect superhero comics to be.

All awesome choices! I’m trying to remember if you’ve read both, but if so how does Dr. Aphra compare to Jason Aaron’s Star Wars? I really enjoyed Aaron’s Star Wars and that first Dr. Aphra run sounds like it gets pretty solid reviews..
@benupc

@@TheComicBookReportI think Aaron’s Star Wars is a little better then Doc Aphra. But Doc Aphra is great especially the first half of the omnibus. A sci-fi adventure with dark humor. The second half wasn’t as good but still worth reading.

Great video. Have all of these to read except USM which I am currently halfway thru and absolutely loving. Grew up with the original, but am so enjoying the re-work. The issue when he told MJ he was Soidey genuinely loved prob cos I had wanted the original to do it all those years ago. Am really looking forward to the rest. Like you I hated 90s comics - I left for over 15 years - but also like you I have been a bit broad brush and am really enjoying rediscovering them. X-Factor looks excellent. Thanks for the video

I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying USM, it really is a gem! I love the original ASM stuff as well of course, but USM has a special place in my heart one of my first favorite comic runs when I was first getting into comics. And yeah 90s books can be hit and miss with me but I’ve found a few gems without a doubt. Peter David’s work on X-Factor is a great example of a book that really worked for me! Would recommend

I love Brubaker's run on Cap. I think it's Cap's best run. Definitely has that spy political thriller vibe to it. If you like him there I'd suggest his books on Criminal. He started it about the same time he was doing Cap. Great stuff!

I’ve read some of criminal! Incredible work but I generally try to avoid nudity in comics so wasn’t able to delve too far in. But yeah, love his work on Cap it’s my definitive run for the character for me

Interesting topic for a video. Love it. For me it would be (in no order): Hawkeye (Fraction/Aja); Daredevil (Bendis); FF (Hickman); Black Panther (Priest); Alias (Bendis). Honorable Mentions: UXM (Claremont); Miracleman (Moore); Daredevil (Miller) . I generally agree with your view of 90's comments. If you look closely you'll see tons of exceptions but yes--so much of it was unnecessarily EXXtreMe! They took the superficial elements of Dark Knight and Watchmen and left behind the depth that made those books great. So much of the art is hard for me to look at. But again...many exceptions. Hey...that's a video maybe!

I’d throw out Daredevil by Bendis for showing how dark and noir a Marvel comic can be and Silver Surfer by Slott and the Allreds for showing some incredible sci fi without being else worlds

1st of all - Brubaker is a genius! I've stopped on the 1st volume of his CA run, as later it gets a bit ummm over-the-top I guess. Anyways, I do feel the same way - Ed took a character I never liked and made him great :) As for Sandman - I think Sandman is more like close related to the classic literature than to a superhero stories (not that it lacks it). Why? Well Gaiman likes to play with intertextuality and takes a lot of from classic literature, mixes it with fantasy/horror stuff and adds a bit of himself there. Sandman showed me that comics are an equal to the so called "real" literature.
@TheComicBookReport
@TheComicBookReport 5 ай бұрын
I love what you wrote about Sandman! I think Gaiman and I’d also throw Alan Moore in there for me those authors really showed me how much this medium can be elevated. A lot of their hits in comics felt more like good literature in many ways 📚
@astrith
@astrith 5 ай бұрын
@@TheComicBookReport Moore is completely different though. He experiments a lot (see his Black Dossier) he uses the comic medium to its full potential (Tomorrow Stories is a great example). Gaiman on the other hand uses his wit and imagination to piece together a story. The pieces he uses are often out there - in other books, in legends, in myths and tells them again, in his own way. And that's why I like him so much, he has a real gift for storytelling.
