The Work Axe Ep2 - Tuning up the Heavy Armored Teutonic Knight that is the Stihl Pro Universal Forestry Axe. Turned out to not be an easy project.

Your finished axe looks much better than out of the box.

Wow! I didnt know this video included removing the orange paint from the handle, but thats what i was looking for. Good work. I hate that orange paint on my gloves and pants

This axe is a rebranded Ochsenkopf "OX 620 H-1257 Universal Gold-Forstaxt ROTBAND-PLUS". The "A" on the bit means that it is quality grade first class by DIN 7287 norm. This requires high carbon steel with at least 0,60% carbon (C60) and it has to be hardened between 51-56 HRC. This norm is also the milspec requirement (TL) of the german military. So when you buy a normed german axe you want to look for those "A" marked ones and not the ones with the "B" (C45).

I do backcountry trail maintenance for the park service and recently I was given a Prandi Yankee ax and after resetting the edge to 25° on the tormek I like it way better than the HB akka some of the guys had. The heavier head was more up my alley and it's a great wedge banger with that short handle

Lots of cool shop mods and tricks, but why not show us even a little bit of the testing at the end? Looks great - is it really better now than it was out of the shop? For me, I’d rather just buy an axe with all the features I like and just go at it. But you do great work in the shop.

I think you missed the mark with this one, basically tearing down an axe intended for splitting/felling wedges and then putting it back together minus the barrel wedges and top plate. You can already buy the version without rotband plus, and it costs less

Think you still could have thinned that handle out a bunch more. Can't wait to see the Hytest!

I felt one in the store. I didn't like how short and thick the handle was. idk how you can split anything with it unless you're on your knees.

What angle did you reprofile the edge to? I do t see myself making any handle/mounting point modifications, and mine splits well right out of the box, but it would be nice to have a better angle to potentially chop and limb if need be.
@Mightycaptain
It's technically more of a felling axe. Meant to drive wedges and pull out undercuts.

Great to see what you did with the axe but I would’ve loved to seeing it in action that’s the true test.

as always enjoyable to watch very nice job . I do think one other thing that changes the use of a axe is the geographical location we are in.
