I think the Fiskars being thinner has a lot to do with it going all the way through and splitting the wood easier! I would definitely prefer to swing a lighter axe for hours than the alternative. Glad I saw the comparison of the two! Because I have the Stihl 261C and I upgraded it from the 18 bar it came with to a 20" 0.063 gauge with a 3/8" pitch. The saw does way better with the bigger bar and heavier gauge chain. It's like day and night. Glad I saw this because if I buy another axe, I probably would have went with Stihl if I hadn't seen this. I've never even heard of Fiskars, but it seemed to be a little easier to do the work, and, really, that's what it comes down to. Glad you done the comparison! It was helpful!

The 260 series might be the best all around saw ever made. I actually prefer a 16 full chisel on mine. As for the fiskars, mine has been left outside in the weather for years now, and it just keeps going. It's honestly annoying.

@@hedgeapplehomestead2816 I've heard that about the 260 by another person recently. I definitely like mine. I just need to get a better chain for it eventually. I'm not cutting anything to merit a full skip or anything, but I would like to get a chain that throws some chips a little better. Hopefully I can do some upgrades to my 261C this year. Westcoast Saws has some great upgrades available. They just recently got some new custom Hickory handles made too, and they sell them with a wedge kit. If I ever find an old 4lb axe head someone is throwing away that looks good, I may get one.

I was skeptical of the "plastic" handle on the Fiskars, but after 3 years of Montana firewood splitting it shows no wear. It's some kind of miracle material. I also own the Stihl maul with a wood handle. Fiskars is faster and more comfortable by far.

Yeah, it's a love/hate for me. I have a vintage chopper 1 that I'll be trying. But the Japanese splitter is still my favorite.

thinner is always going to penetrate easier into a surface. I can see why Stihl is wider and heavier, though. They were trying to guard the handle by the eye from those misses to make it have a longer life, but from seeing your demo, looks like it will also be less efficient and a heavy burden. I'm a big guy, but I don't want to feel like I'm swinging a sledge hammer to split wood. Great video!

@@comingtofull-ageinchrist6736 it's annoyingly good, mainly because I don't like poly handles and it does have very soft steel. But it does split very well, but it's like a lowest bidder tool that does work well. I've said in other videos that if someone took the design of the fiskars, upgraded to steel, and hung a hickory handle, it'd be amazing. But it's definitely a good tool for the money.

@@hedgeapplehomestead2816 ok, I get it. Thanks for explaining. Makes sense! I would prefer a Hickory wood handle on an axe or sledge over plastic, steel or some kind of fiber. I agree!

@@comingtofull-ageinchrist6736 I think I paid $55 for mine about 10 or so years ago, for that price it's awesome, but it'll never be an heirloom or lifetime tool because its cheap steel and can't be rehung. The council tool is awesome for the money as a do all, but as just a splitter, the Japanese is tops right now for me. When work settles down, I think I'll get the prandi scandi and give it a whirl.

Fiskars 36 inch really shines if you split without a chopping round. Split it where it lies, use the Fiskars Isocore for the big rounds and X27 to finish the job.

Study the transference of kinetic energy, if you do it on the soft ground the soft ground absorbs a lot of that energy if you do it on the chopping block or something solid then the energy is mostly transferred into whatever you're striking

@@hedgeapplehomestead2816 Gaining double the acceleration with a longer swing doubles the force. I prefer not to lift the rounds, but who cares, we are among the few that split and burn wood for heat. Cheers!

@@hedgeapplehomestead2816 Fiskars is mostly about head speed, so over the long haul splitting directly on a firm ground surace should be the better approach because you're not lifting rounds up over and over. Everyone is going to do it their own way no matter what someone else says though. Strike accuracy and reading the natural cracks are where most of the gains are to be found.

@@hedgeapplehomestead2816 True BUT I was splitting bone dry ash, with a fisker today, and was hitting pieces that were laying on the ground as if they were golf balls. Split on the first try most of the time. Saved time generally spent on putting then up on the round. These were perfect pieces so I'm not throwing out my round.

Fiskars every time! My Gilpin comes close but it weighs four and a half pounds and has a wood handle. Go Fiskars!

I use the Husqvarna 2800 and find it excellent, that said, if was 4 inches longer, it would be perfect! The Stihl does win on looks though.

The thing that people dislike about the husqvarna's is the difficulty to get them started, but they all have a starting sequence and if you stick to that starting sequence they start no problem.

@@gfalexan I do believe so, husky came out with their own poly line, that very well may be made by fiskars, just different colors. I misunderstood, when I think Husqvarna, I think saws

I have kids and they don’t take care of anything. Fiskars gives a lifetime warranty on the handles. So you can’t beat it.

I did not want to like my fiskars eather I have been using my great grandfathers 2 bit axe for many years Iam 61 years old. Used the fiskars one day had to put the 2 bit axe away for good

Yeah, it's hard to argue, the thing splits well.
