I can't tell you how many tutorials I've went through trying to learn the basics of flash (and having to just learn in on the fly by doing it). And always you're left feeling confused and not sure how to use it in practical applications. But this video is so simple and straightforward. It's excellent. Seriously. I've learned more in five minutes than I have done in probably hours and hours of flash videos.

@imjonlacey
@imjonlacey Жыл бұрын
@@mandysteinback7387 I guess that would depend on how much experience you have, at the events I shoot im taking candid photos and adjusting the light manually depending on room changes and distance the subject is (I love candid shots with a 200mm across the room 👌), shoot and check the image after every couple of shots - also in a 3 hour event im taking 2000+ images and only 200 or so come out great quality, so keep that in mind

Finally, a simple and coherent explanation on how the flash works as a concept. I've always been avoiding flash because I didn't understand the big picture: camera for background exposure and flash compensation for subject. Everything else is built on that. Thank you so much! Teachers like you is the reason I'm good at math. 😂 You can learn rules and formulas all you want - you will be lost until somebody explains the big picture that organizes it all.

Thank you for confirming my point. In my last photography lesson, I told my students digital photography have made photographers lazy. Rather than calculating everything to get it right the first time, you just keep shooting until you do. I guess that's where the comment 'fake it till you make it' comes from. Having been a professional photographer since 1982, even still today I treat my digital cameras like they were film, and I get it right the FIRST TIME. I feel more proud of my images by using my knowledge and experience rather than just hit and miss until you stumble upon the correct exposure. I have told my students if they can't get it right the first time, they may miss the opportunity to ever get it again. As a former news/war photographer, I proved this tens of thousands of times. The ONLY part of your video I agreed with was at the very start, where you said, the camera takes care of the ambient, and the flash takes care of the subject.

I find TTL useful, skips the dimming/adjusting part of it. You basically just have to work on your shutter speed according to ambient and let the flash work the distance to the subjects and adjust its power. Most time works well. I live around 800 ISO, F4.0, usually 1/60 is a good shutter to capture the ambient light and still freeze the subject.
