5 Minute portrait sessions w/ 1 Model 2 Photographers

In this video, I invited a local photographer, Roger Duran, to a fun challenge.
We both had 5 minutes each to photograph our model, Alexa.
This was not a competition with each other, but rather just a fun little challenge with ourselves against the clock!
We shot these in downtown San Antonio. I shot with the Canon EOS R5 while Roger used the Sony A7IV. We both used off camera lighting to help create the portraits in this video!

The video was recorded using the Canon EOS R and audio captured with the DJI Wireless Mic Kit.

Great BTS. Really enjoyed seeing the results of the two systems - both were great! I especially enjoyed seeing the difference in f/1.2 versus f/4. I feel that it gave photographers of all levels a chance to see that an f/4 lens yields great results and that a f/1.2 isn't always necessary to get great pics. Great job by both of you and the model!

I have been following your work since some time now. Can you next time the Flash powers to your details as well please. That shall help a bit more with more ideas for rookie photographers like me. :)

So I can post the flash power, but it’s not really relevant. Let me explain. If you aren’t using the same flash as me, the same distance, the same diffusion, the same ambient lighting, the same camera and lens, it won’t be the same.

@@BiswaRanjanNanda it’s a good question. I get it often. But it just slows me down while editing and I never remember in the first place. Place it won’t add value in the way you need. So I don’t.

This was so cool to watch . I love both of your work. May I ask, what flash is Richard using? I am not quite sure if the soft box/flash being different creates a different overall end result or not? I have never used a soft box flash before.

It can and does make a difference. Roger was using the GODOX AD300. I used the AD600.

Nice shoot... Just one question what power did you used for the flash as I can see other settings you mentioned

Unfortunately, I didn't remember to check my flash settings while shooting in the time crunch. I was around 1/4, 1/2, and full power for my photos.

@@bullwaves6681 I try to mention that in the video if I remember, but telling my power settings really doesn’t give any good info as the power will differ in most any situation. Depending on the amount of ambient light, size of the soft box, output power of your strobe, whether it’s double diffused, gridded, using HSS and so much more. So I really decided not to list the power because of all the variances.

how do you "always" shoot at maximum aperture and always have the whole body of the model in focus?

Also Jason, when you are photographing where is the sun relative to your subject?

In this video, I chose to fight the sun on purpose. It was kind of in front of her on camera left. I was able to shade her a bit using the 42 inch beauty dish. Some I just let the sun hit her and used the strobe to fill in on the opposite side.

What was your reasoning for changing modifiers mid shoot?

Jason used the big octabox whereas Roger used the beauty dish, both used their own gear.
