The best drill to improve your golf this off season. Don't let the offseason wreck your golf swing. Nothing strikes more fear into the hearts of golfers than the "winter slump". It's that problem where you're stuck inside and can't play golf for 3 months. You'd love to play golf but the seasons have other plans. The good news is that you can improve your ball striking from home without hitting balls. That's right, you don't need a mat or a net. No fancy equipment or launch monitors required. All you need is a club and some room to swing it. Do this drill a few times a day and you'll start next season better than the last one.

Thanks again Tom! Tried adding the holding it off after strike element and I hit it so well today. Thanks for keeping it simple and crispy. I watched a ton of golf advice before I pared it down to just a few and this really is the secret sauce. Easy to get lost in the world of grips and lag and all that, this is the best way out for anyone who struggles. Simple, repeatable, not much to remember.

That's *AWESOME,* Mark!! I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!! By the way, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Great instruction Tom and I must say perfect timing for me, I’m 63 yrs young and had my right knee replaced 2 months ago and I’ve just been cleared to go ahead and start hitting some balls. So this is perfect timing for me to start doing these drills at home and the range so when I get back on the course in the spring all healed up I’ll feel more confident I can make solid contact with the golf ball and physically be able to enjoy playing golf pain free.. Thank you for all of your instructional videos and in my humble opinion you are the best!

Wow this is a great video. I've been having trouble with the timing of my release and I think it is because my hands are behind the club at impact. This drill is helping me to keep those hands in front 3-4 feet past the ball. I'm going to keep working on this as I really think this will help my off timed iron shots.

Good stuff Tom...I was hitting my 4 hybrid into the wind and rain Saturday and tried to keep it low (normally probably a 6 iron on that hole). Well...I think I made the swing you are describing in this video. And yes, I missed left with a draw, but I hit it very solid. I'm thinking I actually stumbled on what I need to do more of. I don't care what club you are swinging, that thought of trying to keep it "down" will get those hands forward, and you tend to hold that through impact, just naturally. And I'll deal with that nice little draw, no problem. Thanks for all the good vids Tom!

Nicely done, Mike! And yes - anyone who is prone to flipping through the zone, early extension, a steep path, and/or any other causes of a less-than-ideal impact condition will benefit from this drill. It's a great recipe for consistently crispy contact. And the nice thing is that once you have this key move ingrained, you can easily incorporate minor setup adjustments to shape your shot in either direction and flight the ball high or low. Thanks for your message and for validating this lesson with your experience! Tom

Totally agree. I've basically been doing this drill for a few years now. Difference being I use a Matzie, [remember those]? A weighted club and also work as you pointed out on my arm extension after impact. Has helped with my Driver-Long Irons to be sure. Similar also to Zach Johnson's follow thru if you will. It's a great drill and I'm sure your followers will benefit with it.

That 80's vibe you're feeling is probably because the physics and geometry of the swing system I teach are timeless..... 😎 Anyway....I'm very glad to know that my lesson content and teaching style are resonating with you and providing clarity and simplicity in the muddied, overly complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. Congrats on your purchase of those high performance - and yes, very high feedback - irons. Those blades won't mince words - they'll always be brutally honest with you. Now, if you would like to minimize the brutality and public floggings that the blades are known administer, then perhaps you may want to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in the comprehensive, structured, sequential platform of my online school? It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Love the videos Tom, as I've learned to keep my weight forward, to get those crispy wedge shots, I've found my new mishit is a pull left. While putting my weight forward should I be opening my club face more at address then what I was previously used to? Keep up the great work!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 6 ай бұрын
I'm glad to know that my instruction content is resonating with you, Ryan! It's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. So in the case of a pull, the face is closed to the target line at impact. There are various causes for this, including the face being too shut at address, a grip that is too strong, a ball position that is too far forward, a downswing path that is approaching the ball from the outside, flipping/rolling the hands through the zone and more. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address the possible causes, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks for your message and keep it KFCrispy!! The good thing about being retired in Spain is that there is no low season and therefore no need to train at home to be ready for the next year. Besides there are no more tourists and therefore we can easily play 18 holes in 3h30 or in 3h with a buggy. Nevertheless your video is amazing. I started this drill a couple of days ago and it really really worked very well for me. Except for the driver, when I do that I get a fade for some reason. It doesn’t bother me because the driver is my favorite weapon in the bag. I always hit it more or less straight with an average distance of 233 yards according to the Garmin app of my watch. At least I have a way now to fade the ball on purpose. Thank you so much for helping me again with one of your amazing videos.

Remember to preset slightly more weight forward with the longer clubs, and also be mindful of your ball position, which for the driver should be approximately even with the inside of your lead heel.

Hi Blake, Yes - this swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZaopsZ-3rSXpmw.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder/armpit), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice have caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. I'm glad to know that you are healing up well, John! With regard to your question, in more general terms this is a proven very body-friendly method. I can personally attest to this through my own experience as a golfer who previously experienced back pain, and it is further validated by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. As such, my best suggestion is that you get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in the comprehensive, sequential platform of the online school. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you once you are "back in the swing"! 😎 Tom

With regard to watching different videos from different sources, please be careful in navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. It's best to commit to a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put your blinders on, and stick to it. And if it is the system I teach, then please strongly consider enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level. That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level courses, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Our follow-through is simply the result of all that has occurred in the motion leading up to it. For example, the stock finish for this swing system has a somewhat abbreviated look to it because it is simply the result of a very connected, powerful, and body-friendly motion. Have a look at Tommy Fleetwood's finish, for example - he is one of the best ball strikers out there. And there are plenty of others on Tour whose follow-throughs are similar. There's no need for the shaft to whack you in the back, and for many in the amateur ranks that type of loose finish is an indicator of a loss of critical structure somewhere in the swing motion. Tom

So very kind of you... With regard to the erroneous notion that we need to contrive some type of active "release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of this action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that even the vast majority of pros are trying to consciously manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. Here are a few of my channel episodes that may help to clarify: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMtinrRlmcfeemg.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iduedrVm2rDDkaM.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sN1nhd2k2deYl40.html I'm accustomed to pushback from the innocently uninformed and the mistaught as well as those misguided naysayers, but it's all inconsequential since this swing model resides in the truth. “Truth" is defined as that which conforms to reality, and this swing system conforms to the unchanging realities of physics, geometry, and data from the game’s best golf ball strikers. That's the truth, and the results - as backed up by countless unsolicited testimonials - are the proof: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews So, while I recognize your apparent embracing of the popular cancel culture movement, there simply exists no basis for your unprovoked attack on me or my instruction business, and it is thusly rendered null and void. Best of luck to you.

I can flight it as high or low as desired, Sean. A good impact condition is a good impact condition. Regardless of whether you kept your weight forward for the entirety of the swing or have some shifting going on, solid impact always has the weight forward and the hands ahead of the clubface. In other words, when doing this drill where should my hands be when starting with the club parallel to the ground. Thanks. Ralph.

Hi Ralph, At P6 - club parallel to the ground in the downswing - the butt of the club should be approximately under your chin (assuming your head has not moved side to side) with the hands even with the trail leg. Remember, though, that at this point in the swing the trail leg is moving forward due to the lateral targetward action of the hips. Hi Tom, excellent video like all the rest but I slowed down your slowed down front view and at the top of your swing your hips moved forward which then initiated your shoulders not the other way round?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 ай бұрын
While your observation is correct, it's all a matter of "feel", Clive. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. Anyway, here are some lesson videos specific to the topic of this lateral hip action: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9lmnbaYstyunYE.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqhkfNeDmM3Zd4k.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5uIjMp81Na4kmg.html Tom

If it is open at impact, then there must be some type of manipulation taking place somewhere upstream in the motion such as rolling the face open or cupping the lead wrist. There should not be any of this. Video should help you to identify the culprit. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

I'm thrilled for your improvement and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! With regard to your wedges, consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address the listed swing issues, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Keep up the great work, and let's crisp up those wedges!
