I would really love to visit Finland, and also Sweden. As I’ve mentioned before (you’re probably going to roll your eyes) my grandparents were immigrants from these two countries. I’m glad that most everyone speaks English because Finnish seems like quite an intimidating language. Maybe when this pandemic is over and I can save some money my wife kid and I can go spend a week or two in Helsinki. I do love how people in Finland are so much more reserved than those in the United States, it’s far more suitable to my personality, as is the overall individuality combined with an understanding for a collective good of the community and the needs of it. It seems like a wonderful place. And of course every place has its downfalls too.

Found you from Clubhouse. I'm a Finnish citizen (through my mother who grew up in Pohjanmaa) but too old to relocate (already did it once). But this (and your channel as a whole) is great for my 17-year-old son (also with citizenship) who has considered Finland as a future option. Thank you, and tervetuloa from Japan.

I love your videos. My dream is to move to a Nordic country soon. I have been to all of them except Iceland and Finland. I just finished my masters degree in nursing. I found a PhD degree in Finland for nursing at University of Turku. It looks interesting. I would love to see a video on PhDs in Finland. Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey man and thanks so much for sharing your story! I would love to talk about PhD opportunities in Finland but the biggest issue is simply the lack of personal experience and expertise in this topic. However, my brother is actually doing his PhD in biology and we've been planning on doing a playlist together about this topic. Ive already started gathering questions from other prospective PhD students so please let me know what kind of questions you have on the topic and id love to add those to the list. We will try to cover as many of the topics in the future videos as possible 👍

Questions I have are 1.) are PhDs treated like a job where you get both a free education and a small salary if you are an international student similar to how they do it in Sweden? 2) any thoughts on the university in Turku and the city ? 3) what’s the best way to look for PhDs to apply for in Finland? 4) is there an option for taking Finish or Swedish classes alongside the PhD? Thanks so much for all the help!

Great video Oliver, not that I needed any more reason to move to Finland. You might have talked about this some time ago, but I'm new to your channel so I have to ask; have you ever lived in an English-speaking country? Finns are known for good English ... mut sun englannin kieli on uudella tasolla!

Hey Joshua and thanks for the lovely feedback, i do truly appreciate it! Ive never lived in an English-speaking country. I have done a few exchange periods but those were in Germany and in the Netherlands. I would actually give the most credits to World of Warcraft and Top Gear 😅. You dont want to know how much time i spend with those when i was a teenager. On top of consuming just a unbelievable amount of English-speaking media, ive always been fascinated by different languages and especially their pronunciation. This has helped me quite a lot over the years 👍.

Hyvaa ilta, kittos I have many quick questions 1) Can I camp in any place outside cities ? 2) I heard it is allowed to pass through any land even if its private? 3) Can I cut trees from forests? 4) Please name some jobs of daily cash payment basis? 5) Which authority is regulating the job and employment system in Finland? 6) Why Finnish does not tour outside Finland and Europe ?

Those are some interesting questions 👍. Here are some quick answers: 1. No. Everyone is allowed to camp out temporarily a reasonable distance from homes. This right does no apply to peoples yards and other premises protected by domestic privacy. In addition, there are restrictions to this right in certain national parks, nature reserves and other areas. In addition, camping is restricted in many areas during certain seasons. More information and specific definitions can be found on this website: and in the Everyman's right in Finland Pdf on the bottom of the page: www.nationalparks.fi/everymansright 2. This is is true to an extent. The same restrictions apply as to the first question. Please refer to the links above. 3. No. This is not allowed. However, you are allowed to pick wild berries, mushrooms and flowers, as long as they are not protected species. Same restrictions apply here as above. 4. If you mean jobs where you are paid daily by cash, i do not know of any. Please be aware that getting cash payments in Finland is extremely rare because employers are by law bound to inform the tax administrator about all salaries paid + in Finland employers are responsible of declaring and paying your income tax from your salary. This is why cash payments are super rare and mostly happen when taxes are avoided (which is illegal). 5. There are multiple. Depends on what regulations you are looking for. 6. I dont understand the question. Could you please elaborate a bit more.

I mean that i didn't buy the car in another country looking for a better price than in Finland....i just own it already in Italy since a year and half. Please reply if you have time for that) Thanks

That is a super interesting question! I do not have any prior knowledge about this topic but a quick search from the Finnish Customs point that bringing a car to Finland when moving from within the EU you should not be required to pay *customs* or *value added tax*. However, you have to declare the car for use in Finland and make declaration for the tax administration for a car tax. How is doing master in technology and information in finland. How many years are allowed to stay or to get job after completion of master degree.

Hey and thanks for the questions! Unfortunately i cant comment on how it is to study tech and IT in Finland because i have no personal experience in the field. Ive done my degree in business and our studies are pretty different from those of IT students. To your second question, after you have graduated from university in Finland you are allowed to stay in Finland to work as long as you like (as long as you are able to renew your residence permit). If you already have a job before graduation, you can apply for a residence permit to work based on a degree done in Finland. More information about that here: migri.fi/en/degree-completed-in-finland If you have not found a job before you graduate, you can apply for a 1 year residence permit during which you should look for a job. If you are able to find a job during that 1 year period, you can then get a residence permit to work here. More about this topic here: migri.fi/en/extended-permit-to-look-for-work

Oh i think Finland might be a super interesting place for you. It would be quite a change indeed 😅. Actually, there are a lot of jobs in the restaurant and hospitality business especially in Lapland especially during high seasons (winter in Finland). I know that many international chefs like to work in Lapland during the winter and e.g. in the capital Helsinki during summer and early autumn. It's kinda confusing that Finland is one of the happiest countries because everytime i talk to a finn they seemed to be depressed.

Yeah i do recognise that it sounds a bit funny. However, i would argue that the way that these are measured is more about a baseline level of happiness and satisfaction of ones life. You know, a person might look happy (smiling and things) on the outside while also feeling stressed and unsure on the inside. The same also applies the other way round. This is why i think the report i cited was so interesting. The researchers went to a lot of info about what constitutes overall happiness.

Published 6 months ago 62 highest suicide countries and Finland is not even mentioned. The highest suicide countries are: The 1st Lithuania, The 2 nd Russia and the 3 rd South Korea

Finland's suicide rates are not that high anymore. It was in the 90's, but since then Finland's suicide rates have gone drasticly down. Ppl still remember that old stuff. It is stuck in their heads. Everybody can watch The video "Suicide rate n the world/Country suicide rates comparison." Published 6 months ago. 62 highest suicide countries and Finland is not even mentioned. The highest suicide countries are: The 1st Lithuania, the 2 nd Russia and the 3 rd South Korea.

Right, this is true and as i mentioned in the video, the perception that the suicide rates are high is actually based on outdated information that is not longer valid. The old notion has just gotten stuck and its important for us to communicate that this is no longer the case. So i appreciate the comment 👍
